Only vaguely related but...

I was in the Apple store yesterday buying a 15" rMBP (which rocks my world) and noticed some space grey Mini's on display. I wasn't aware Apple were doing the old mini in the new colour so thought, wow, retina Mini's for display purposes! I picked one up and thought, briefly, "wtf this display looks no better!", ha!

After briefly considering an iPad Air, I'm definitely getting an rMini now, far better accompaniment to my mbp.

This is a silly thread though, if I had massive coat pockets I'd buy an Air, larger fonts and bigger touch targets make it a more pleasurable experience imo, sod the ppi.

The PPI figure is only relevant from the same viewing distance. Due to the retina mini being smaller, you will most likely hold it a closer to you. Because it still shows the exact same content as the Air, only smaller, holding it closer means you most likely won't need to zoom in any more on the retina mini than the Air assuming you don't have any issues with your vision. Visually, an Air held further from you will not perceive to be any worse than a retina mini held closer to you.
If you view a current mini from a big enough distance you won't be able to discern individual pixels!

Is there somewhere I can read up on this? Is it app specific, as in only in the photos app? Or is it all apps? Seems odd to me that image rendering based on orientation would be identical in all apps

It's mainly an issue in Safari and other browsers. In landscape mode, the images look up-rezzed, not unlike what you see on retina MBPs if images are relatively small. It would be necessary to upload images with let's say 1600 pixel instead of 800 but then you are in the territory that makes it attractive for image thieves.
