well, say goodbye to a macbook with decent wifi reception. if i were in the market, i'd be looking for a good deal on a refurb white plastic macbook in a couple days.

According to the PDF posted here already, the airport card will be in the display. On most laptops at least the antennas are in the display. If the display top case is al, then you'd only get crappy reception with the laptop closed.

Maybe a stupid question, but if there's no firewire, how are you supposed to transfer your files from your old computer to your new macbook?

I don't think I've ever seen a USB to USB cable...

While not the same, you can transfer documents and settings through the migration assistant wirelessly or via ethernet (example is the macbook air). This would provide similar functionality, but obviously not if you couldn't actually start the computer.

Im buying my first macbook and i don't care what ports it has on it as i'll only be using it for itunes and surfing the net as i do with my current waste of money £1200 Vaio:D roll on tuesday.

From the other thread, perhaps on the new MacBooks the port next to MagSafe is FW800. I am not too surprised if Apple wanted to sell another cable (USB-to-Ethernet, ala MB Air) to get Ethernet back!

Damn I hope so. I would much rather have FireWire than ethernet.

I think someone else (not me because I'm lazy) should start a poll on if they had to give up a port which would they prefer to lose FW or ethernet, I'd be interested to see the results.
I suppose the smart choice would be lose ethernet, since you can use a adapter to get ethernet, but still that would mean GB ethernet is pointless wouldn't it?

I'm gutted that the MacBook doesn't have FireWire. I was convinced that the MacBook case was slightly thinner making the Pro, making the FireWire 800 port look like an Ethernet port.

Maybe I'm completely wrong but could there not be additional ports on the rear of the notebooks aswell as on the left???

I think no chance of that. See how the screen tilts down on the current MacBooks? The lower part of the LCD obscures the back of the MacBook, completely blocking any ports that would be there.

I don't think Apple would go back down this road, especially with the current hinge design which is probably going to carry over into the new models

Looks great! Very thin. Glad they did away with the latch. ENOUGH LEAKS though I want a nice surprise on Tuesday...Let's Rock was very predictable and I hope this event doesn't turn out the same way. Apple needs to do a better job keeping everything secured. Back in the day we had no idea when and what would be announced and now it's just gotten ridiculous.

No, they need to do a better job of innovating. "Let's Rock" was not boring because we knew what was going to be released, but because there was no innovation- same old iPods dressed up in slightly different packages. It reminded me of the annual releases of the auto industry--- same cars, slightly different styling---no real reason, purpose, or improvements, the only point is that it appears different from last year's, and in the case of the iPod just enough so you can't use your old case.

I mean, it's a laptop - who needs a wired connection for their laptop these days?
The vast majority of those who use laptops for working.
Good point.
Not. It's a completely stupid one, especially when the main alternative to ethernet is completely unsecure and much slower wifi connections, which usually aren't allowed to access internal networks (using WiFi to connect to my employer's internal network through VPN? How about no?). Likewise for uni networks, they're all wired, and I doubt Apple wants to drop student support.

It's a valid expectation for an Air, which is supposed to move all around, but not for a macbook (and even less for a MBP).
I've always been a pro user, so forgive ignorance - but does current macbook support FW and if so at what level?
The current macbooks have a single FW400 port
On page 43 they mention that from January to March this year they did the following:

As nice as they were to print this information, they don't provide a photo of the port.

Sundayton, proprietary mini displayport is a possibility?
maybe the FireWire S800T uses breakout cables?

Just a guess?
I doubt it, eth needs all the lines in the cable and so does FW-800, there's nothing to share that I can see, unless you want to shoot 45W in your ethernet network, which your peripherals might not be fond of.

DisplayPort.

DisplayPort looks like a CPU port, really. That does. It's also separate from the other USB ports. I don't know why they'd put a DisplayPort port near the front end, but whatever. It's there. :)

Agree with that. The ports on the larger notebook (probably a MBP 15") appear to be (from right to left):

- magsafe (hidden but surely there, maybe rotated and/or smaller than before in order to make it fit in what appears to be very little space)
- ethernet
- FW 3200/800
- USB
- USB
- Probably some kind of DVI (note that this port looks different from the one below this list on the smaller notebook - THAT one is a big ???, unless the photo is just screwy and it's actually the same as the one on the bigger notebook.)
- Line in
- Headphones/toslink minijack combo
- Expresscard 34
- A small hole (any ideas?)
- And the taped up hole looks like displayport to me. It could be HDMI but the straight end on one side looks more like displayport.

It's A Media Card Reader!!!!!

Both MB and MBP seem to have an additional hole near the front left hand side - like a microphone or headphone socket.

Also the MBP seems to have an extra USB port, taped over in the photo, next to the mystery hole near the front left.

Kensington security hole seems to be next to the CD slot on the other side. [edit: for the MBP]

It's a media card reader!

Isn't the taped over hidden port an expansion port?

This would allow a port-replicator/docking station to be attached. It can also be used for an external "brick" for connecting your other perifials when your are not on the move such as network (ethernet), firewire hard disks, printers, screens, etc.

I'm confused...

Doesn't  have an adapter that converts USB 2.0 into Ethernet? If so, why bother putting an Ethernet port on the laptop: it could possibly make it thinner and slightly more profits for Apple.

I also really hope they don't take away firewire 400, because, first of all, I have no idea what firewire 800 is and therefore have no use for it, and I use Firewire 400 often for my camcorder and hard drives because it's like a million times faster than USB.

The great and ugly Ethernet vs. FireWire poll!

If you think FW400 is fast, well FW800 is about twice as fast.

BTW, for those of us who use FW800, we sort of hate to use FW400 because it is so slow. :p

FW3200 will be 8 times as fast as FW400. Sweet! :)

Don't know if anyone mentioned this but there are no screws on either side to hold the case together like my current MBP...

pretty impressive manufacturing.

I can't tell from the inside if its cut from one solid "brick" or the special laser welding.

I don't think anyone denies that, its still better than USB though so its hardly a dead protocol. I don't really care what kind of FW they are as long as there are TWO of them and they are backwards compatible w/ 4 & 800. Also consider how many FW 400 gizmos there are compared to 800...I haven't even heard of anything using 16 or 3200 yet.

Show me a device that is using the full FW800 bandwidth. Maybe for video editing and 32 in/out sound cards. No harddisk outside a very fast and expensive RAID 5 would be able to provide the throughput necessary.
