Rumors suggest that the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models are going to feature always-on display technology similar to the Apple Watch, and hints of what that always-on display might look like could be in the latest Xcode 14 beta.

As noted on Twitter by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser, the Xcode 14 beta features an interesting Lock Screen interface that eliminates detail from an on-screen widget as the screen wakes. The animation indicates that the iPhone 14 Pro models could remove intricate details from widgets and other Lock Screen content when the iPhone is locked and the always-on display is active.

iOS developer @rhogelleim also noted signs of a black and white version of a widget that is typically in color in the Xcode 14 beta that could be related to the always-on display.

The most recent iOS 16 beta also features hints of a "Sleep" state for wallpapers, offering further information on how the always-on display will work. "Sleep" versions of wallpapers are darker, fading out bright colors, which would perhaps preserve battery life when used with an always-on display.

Always-on display functionality is rumored to be limited to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max as these devices will have the necessary display technology. Rumors indicate the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will feature refresh rates that vary from 1Hz to 120Hz, an improvement over the 10Hz to 120Hz refresh rates available with the iPhone 13 Pro devices.

The 1Hz refresh rate will allow for the time, widgets, and perhaps notifications to be visible while the iPhone is in a sleep state. Apple's iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models are also rumored to be getting a no-notch design that instead uses pill-shaped and hole-punch cutouts for Face ID and camera hardware, improved rear cameras, and A16 chips, with full details available in our dedicated iPhone 14 Pro roundup.

Unpopular opinion: Majority of folks will most likely turn it off. Battery Lives Matter!
Perhaps AOD could be tied to the Focus mode? I would turn it off for Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Work, etc., but I could see myself using it for other modes.

You can have a single cable to charge your iPad, iPhone and MacBook.
That’s a reasonable desire. It doesn’t bother me really. I use my monitors to charge my MacBook Pro, a USB-C cable to charge my iPad Pro and a charging pad for my iPhone. I also have a bunch of USB devices in my bike shop to recharge stuff for my bikes (lights, GPS, cams, shifting, etc). Some are USB-C, some are micro-USB. It’s not a problem really. I just change cables in the charger stations as I get more USB-C compatible devices, but they all charge the same for me in the end.
Lightning blows. Usb-c should have been adopted years ago.
You win the internet for the best reasoning. Actually not. Your answer “blows” for adding exactly nothing to the conversation. If you can answer the question then let’s hear it. 🙄

Lightning is a great connector, IMO superior to USB-C. However, having a single "good enough" connector standard is superior to the mess we are in right now.

IMO, iPhone 11 Pro was the perfect opportunity. Adopting USB-C on their "Pro" iPhone segment while keeping the non-Pro models on the Lightning connector would've been a good differentiator.

Likewise, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max should use the USB-C connector. And it baffles my mind that Mac input devices are using Lightning instead of USB-C.

Still having no usb-c is a major missed opportunity on this gen, and many would agree.
As for AOD, idk, I never used AOD of any kind, and doesn’t feel it being too needed (either screen turned on or off). Maybe it will be good for taking a glance at current time if I happen to get up mid-night.
Also, I’ll believe it when I see it. While I have no doubt apple will develop features that matches their goal, I don’t want to put my hope too high, knowing apple will also put arbitrary limits on how features work, sometimes in a very convoluted fashion.

I’m curious. Why does that matter so much for the iPhone? As long as I don’t have to determine connector orientation (solved by lightning connector) I’m good. Oh wait, I almost never use the connection anyway.
Charging, it doesn’t matter. Unless you want bazillion watts for charging in 3 seconds to full.

The actual useful thing is data transfer. USB-C would allow data transfer at MUCH higher speeds than lightning.

The example someone gave was “imagine trying to transfer a 8k (rumored) video file that is several minutes long to your computer over the slow data transfer speeds of lightning”.

Picture for transfer speed differences.

Obviously he means being able to use one type of cable for all devices.
If you can't stop confusing two cable types that look nothing alike, should you really be operating a computer?

The main benefit of USB-C is for data transfer, not charging. But then you have to make sure you brought a TB cable instead of regular USB-C, and to get the fastest data transfer you need a short cable which sucks for charging from a wall. So now you have to bring two cables, one for charging and the other for data transfer. LOL

iPhones will get USB-C but this isn't the big issue people want to turn it into.

Have it on two of my Samsung Galaxy phones. Never really cared for it tbh. The only time I really look at my sleeping phone screen is to check the charging battery status and even that, Apple took away on the iOS 16 betas lol especially „useless“ when u have an Apple Watch but I guess it’s nice to have the option to use it
