Had to happen.

I find that I'm already programmed to use it anyway.

Press finger on home button... hey why isn't this unlocking? Ohh... right... unlocks iPad the old fashioned way.

Am I the only one who still haven't found an use for the iPad ?

Just depends on what you want. Some would argue it's better than a laptop for browsing and media consumption. I think iMac and iPad would be a nice combo.

No surprise here. Now lets hope they incorporate multiple user accounts into iOS 8. Touch ID is a great gateway to separate user logins.

Agreed. My wife uses our iPad which is linked to my Apple ID so whenever she's watching Netflix and I get an iMessage, e-mail, or FaceTime call, it shows up on the iPad as well. If I'm using the iPad, I want to be able to see the notifications; but I don't want to constantly be toggling e-mail, FaceTime, and iMessage notifications on and off depending on who's using the device.

Multiple user accounts are the one glaring hole I can see for iOS on the iPad. Apple has to know that the vast majority of households are not likely to buy multiple iPads for each person in the house.

Unfortunately, having a third-gen iPad (which is like the red-headed stepchild of the iPad line), I don't expect multiple user accounts to be supported on my iPad if and when the feature does come to iOS.

the iPhone always get the first major features,
wish my retina mini got a touch ID.

Uh, didn't the FIRST iPad to be released after the introduction of Siri include Siri???

How did they keep it "iPhone forever" if it immediately came out for iPad?

Nope, "the new iPad" (3rd Generation) does not have Siri on iOS 5, only after iOS 6 came out did it get Siri.

Ok so you are complaining current gen iPad is not an upgrade from your current model. I think you must have missed a memo or something but you are missing out big time. The retina screen alone is worth the upgrade, it's smaller, lighter like 20x as powerful cpu/gpu, better cameras front and back... the list goes on and on. You sound like the kind of guy who sticks on windows xp on his archaic gateway pc from the late 90s because it works just as good. quite clearly there is massive differences in every aspect and apple is doing plenty to advance the iPad. There is nothing stale about it and clearly apple is miles ahead in software and hardware for tablets, you say other tablets like they have even a chance against the package of the iPad right now.

Yes, you got me. I do own a 10 year old HP with XP on it.

I also have a rMBP and a Mac Mini and a 5s and a lot of stuff. My IPad 2 works the same as a new one.

That's like saying I should upgrade my other Macs that work well just to have the same experience on a new one.

Like I said, those are all good reasons to maybe upgrade but it's still the same experience.

I don't think the iPad is stale, but I agree with Crosscreek regarding needing a reason to upgrade. I use an iPad exclusively as a consumption device: web browsing, netflix, and a little light gaming. It never leaves my house. My Nexus 7 is my "go to" mobile tablet. From my personal use case, nothing you mentioned above is compelling enough to make me replace my iPad2. The iPad fits a specific niche in my tech. It's my couch companion. Just like my MBA when I want to do more keyboard centric things. When I step out the door, my GS3, N7, and HP(work) laptop are in tow. Serious gaming happens on my XBox and Falcon NW gaming rig.

If Touch ID brought separate user profiles, that might be compelling enough to make me take a look. As is, the iPad 2 fits perfectly in my use case scenario.

Not surprising. What I'm interested to see is if Apple includes unique functionality, such as support for multiple users with Touch ID.

No need to choose the user and type in a password... just have iPad automatically recognize the user based on fingerprint and open up to their settings... all in a split second. Now that would be a killer feature.

It should have been in the Air.

It was believed that there was a shortage of touch ID sensors given the huge demand for the iPhone..That would have probably meant a delayed launch of the Air which would have most likely moved it outside of the holiday quarter, thereby seriously impacting apple's bottom line.

Last month Apple announced that they had sold a record 51 million iPhones in the holiday quarter. However, Wall Street was hoping that Apple would have shipped at least 55 million units. Apple could have hit that number handedly if they were able to produce enough iPhone 5S models. The hold up in production was due to the yield rate for Apple's Touch ID component. Apple's shift to an 8-inch component for the Touch ID component for next generation iPhones will ensure that volume production won't be hindered.

Come on profiles in iOS8! :D

Even just core iOS services: mail accounts, bookmarks, a few user settings for content restriction ... then assuming the API is available for 3rd party, we can get to things like multiple Netflix accounts

A few months back I upgraded from an iPad 2 to an iPad Air, and the difference in network/download/browsing speed is huge, the Air has MIMO while the 2 doesn't. That alone made it worthwhile for me, not to mention the A7 is so much faster, and the iPad itself smaller & lighter without compromising the screen. And obviously, the iPad 2 isn't Retina either.

A few 'minor' upgrades that obviously escaped the attention of the poster you replied to. ;)
Maybe he's never compared them, side by side.

TouchId will be nice; am enjoying it on my iPhone. However, Apple BETTER make 32gb the minimum amount of storage on all their future devices or else I'm going to be pissed! Stop being stingy with storage Apple!

so, bottom line the new ipads will have TouchID , A8 processor, and like the iPhone 5/5s/imac/macbook pro, there is no gap between the glass and display so i guess a little thinner chase

I hope this won't be the only addition to the iPad mini... this won't make me upgrade unless there is a chip bump
