While I actually shelled out money for the Smart Cover, I also was looking for something that offered "all around protection".

I hated the Apple case for the original iPad, mainly the sharp seams that made it look un-elegant. But, it wound up being the case I used the entire time I was using the device. Why? I found nothing better that wasn't bulky.

So for the iPad 2, I found out very quickly that carrying it under one's arm was not a smart idea with the smart cover. It'll pop off with no warning and the iPad will start sliding down to oblivion. I also hated the idea of setting it down on hard surfaces and marring up the back. The original iPad I have looks like it just came out of the box, despite everyday heavy use.

So, I settled for now with the Griffin Elan Folio Slim, which is the closest thing to the Apple case, seams and all. It's not as nice as the Apple case, but I feel safer with the ipad in it.

My black leather 'smart' cover looks nice when closed, but this thing is mainly just a removable screen protector. if my iPad hadn't come with it (craigslist) I wouldn't buy one.
I know some company can improve on this.
Does the on/off function rely on a special chip in the cover or could any magnetic cover have this function?
I agree, the previous apple case was the best one. I want something similar for the 2 but it's a shame to add much bulk to it, but it needs protection if dropped!

I agree with the comment about "removable screen protector". I tried to like mine, but less than 24 hours after I got my iPad 2, I had dropped it 3 or 4 times because of the magnet and that flukey triangle. I'm now sporting the
Targus 360 and my anxiety level during use has dropped to almost nil..

I had the Marware EcoFlip for my iPad 1 and it had a hand place that I could use to hold it up. That was very convenient and it was more comfortable to hold with the cover on than with it off, despite the fact that it added an extra pound or so of weight. I might buy a smart cover to test it out, depending on Apples return policies, but I'm probably going to go third party again. It's a shame because I really like how the smart cover turns the iPad on automatically. Hopefully new cases come out soon that replicate the functionality.

I too have been wondering the same thing about holding positions. I went to my local Apple store today and they did not even have any to "test" out. I actually was more interested and seeing how the feel was different on the two. Leather is nice and the colors are more what i would want....but 70 dollars is just stupid.

It seems a lot of people are returning their smart covers (specially on this forum)...I wonder what they do with them? I wouldnt mind snagging one used at a discount price.

I fold the smart cover all the way back then fold it in half so the magnets stick. The cover is held to the back with my left hand and my right hand is on the silver back of the iPad.

I really would like to find a case to cover the back side of the iPad and accommodate the smart cover.

The smart cover is a joke, along with the price of it. I would never purchase an Apple accessory for an iPod, iPad, or iPhone. They make junk, state it's revolutionary, and sell it for $80. Pure money scamming.

While I agree that Apple can be amazingly thick with their pricing (RAM and hard drives in particular), they don't really sell gimmicky items as a whole, nor do they "scam". Your comments are a bit over the top.

I give you this, the battery charger is gimmicky, but the smart cover? Not so much. There is actual multi-functionality to this device. Did they charge to much for the leather one? Probably. Should have been $49.99. Poly ones should have been $14.99 (and come in black!)

I never said their products were junk so I'm not sure what you're talking about with RAM and hard drives. I'm talking about all Apple accessories for devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Prices are ridiculous and if it wasn't for the Apple name, those products would never sell for those prices. You realize this smart case just covers the front of your screen, nothing else.. And they're charging 80 bucks? Excuse me? It probably costs them $5 at max to make one of them. Maybe a little more for the leather ones. And don't get me started with their headphones, cables, and wall outlets...

If you're paying $700 for an iPad, the least they could do is throw in a smart cover. And not charge you another $80 on top of the $700 you just dropped for the device.

You're paying $80 for $20 of materials, $20 of Appletax and $40 of R&D.

Likely done to make up losses for the iPad2, as well.

Great idea. This works really well. Thanks!

It's interesting to see how many people hate the smart cover. I personally find the design to be amazing. I have my ipad paired with a tan leather smart cover and a ZUM back case. THINNEST rap-around solution I have found, while keeping the ipad2 form factor.

With the issue of how to hold it: you uncover it, fold it in half behind the ipad, and hold it in place with your hand.. bingo.

It's not meant to be held in my opinion. It's there to protect the screen and be used as a stand for typing/viewing then when holding the iPad the smart cover is meant to be took off. At least that's how i'm using it I have the Smart Cover with a Switcheasy Coverbuddy and it's easy to just take off when holding the iPad and easily put back on when you need to use it for a stand or to carry it etc.

I use the Speck Smartshell, it has a little magnet on the back that attaches to the smart cover and holds it when you have it flipped back. It works fine for me.

Yoobao V4

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Yoobao V4 cover! Not any other verson but V4. I've had mine 2 days and I love it!...Black leather and excllent workmanship...Doesnt add bulk and I love holding the ipad with it on.
I paid $32.00 including shipping through Amazon. :D
