Apple is partnering with singer Mariah Carey for a Christmas-themed show later this year, Apple announced today. "Mariah Carey's Magical Christmas Special" will premiere just after the 25th anniversary of Carey's iconic holiday hit "All I Want for Christmas is You."

The Christmas special will feature Mariah Carey and a "star-studded lineup of surprise guest appearances" offering a "magical holiday journey to enliven the Christmas spirit around the world."

It combines music, dancing, and animation, all of which are driven by a "universally heartwarming story" that's meant to bring the world together.

Carey will serve as an executive producer on the special along with production company Done + Dusted, known for "The Disney Family Singalong" and "The Little Mermaid Live." It will be directed by Hamish Hamilton, who worked on the London Olympics opening and closing ceremonies and Roman Coppola, known for "Moonrise Kingdom" and "A Very Murray Christmas."

Netflix makes great original programming. Amazon does an OK job. Apple it seems has gone for programming that is skewed by a certain artistic filter. Not having a better rounded lineup of entertainment detracts from the overall quality and will drive away viewers.

I think Apple TV+ has done quite well in the first 10 months. Between The Morning Show, Ted Lasso, For All Mankind, and Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet, Apple TV+ has high quality ratio. Even their worst offerings is pretty decent.

Since House of Cards premiered on February 2013, Netflix added just 5 original series, Bad Samaritans, Hemlock Grove, Orange Is The New Black, Marco Polo, and Turbo Fast. It took Netflix 3 years to build up an original series library before it became a formidable competitor to HBO originals. Until then, it heavily relied on series licensed from Marvel and back catalog from other studios to grow its business.

Having said that, I think Apple should have a back catalog of some sort, either through acquisition or licensing deals.

All I Want For Christmas and 90s Mariah brings back a ton of nostalgia for me. I may watch this in the hope that it captures some of the same magic.
