After reading the AnandTech review, stating it can get 25+ hours on a single charge when working as a mobile hotspot, I'm starting to wonder if someone will try to convince their IT guys to get a new iPad as a 'emergency backup' internet solution.

30+Mbps is perfectly acceptable for a small/medium workgroup, and - as an iPad - it even has it's own "UPS"! So even if the broadband and power is down, as long as the cell-towers are still functional and everyone is working on laptops, you're still in business.

Don't think any IT guys would fall for it though! ;)

Have fun with the data overages on that one!

Holy crap again...tested my LTE connection at work:

38.09 mbps down, 25.70 mbps up

34.55 mbps down, 21.32 mbps up

That's just insane fast. I'm used to my home cable 10mbsp down 1.4 mbsp up connection.

Yeah, my data came down so fast it poured out of the headphone jack and all over my den floor. I'm just lucky I wasn't using earphones or I could have been killed or at the very least had millions of nanorobots crawling around inside me.

Since iOS is not optimized for this speed (to help us maintain control of data usage), i'd submit its too fast.

That's an excellent analogy. I have to be so careful now because watching videos with out all the lag that came with 3G makes it easy to go overboard. One time I used a whole gig in a day.

I used a gig plus using my hotspot to stream my Apple TV yesterday. My cable modem failed and I only had 25 minutes of movie left. So I said, lets try this out. Well I'm now at 2Gb for the month and there is about 14 more days to go. I had to upgrade to the 5GB for $50 per month.

I really don't see how even HD streaming was 1.2 GB for just 25 minutes left of my movie, but it was. I checked my usage right before and right afterwards.

Unless you stream Netflix via LTE, a 5mb webpage loading is a 5mb webpage. EDGE, 3G or LTE.

I just don't quite get why people think that the same usage 3g vs. LTE will suddenly cause you to hit your cap. Yes videos will take advantage of the additional speeds by streaming at a higher quality, which will use more data. No, you shouldn't stream Netflix incessantly on pre-paid iPad data with only 1gig of data anyway, regardless of speed.

Cause the 5mb webpage loaded in 2 seconds and I was done looking at it 10 minutes ago so I've moved on to 3 or 4 more 5mb web pages since then.

----------

Surprisingly I'm not blowing through mine as quick as I thought I would... 730mb left to use in 15 days. Started with 1gb.

I'm amazed by AT&T LTE! I'm getting 43Mbps Down and 20 Up right now as we speak. :D

amen brother, 42 up 25 down :) blows my FIBEROPTIC AWAY

its going to buffer the entire movie. even if you skip to the last 25 min

I blew thru 800 MB in one day watching a couple of short videos. With my 1GB limited monthly plan, you bet I won't do that again. Having a 1 GB monthly limit may be fine for my iPhone, but it is a painful limitation for the iPad...even 5 GB per month would require me to continue to rely on wifi for hi-bandwidth uses like streaming and downloading videos. So that makes LTE a backup service on my ipad...what a waste of high speed.

really?.. ive seen a lot of people with similar complaints.

how does apple control YOUR data usage. just check your data usage in the settings every couple of days. dont download apps on cellular, dont stream netflix on cell service.

thats like getting mad at a car company for your gas milage sucking because youre driving fast.

Yeap...definitely going to switch my unlimited plan to my iPad...

its a shame they wont offer unlimted :( id gladly replace my fiberoptic at home with my att lte. id easily pay $75 bucks

Totally agree with this! With this kind of speed I'd gladly drop my 6mbps DSL (that's as fast as I'm being offered)

Wow, it is reading threads like this that make me so thankful that I have fiber optic cable running directly into my house! (Speeds that blow LTE out of the water). And I can use it, and do, on all my devices in my house. But hey, for a totally wireless technology, LTE sounds pretty quick.

I don't have that option either... :(

Would totally jump on that like my friend Gary on a Vegas hooker.

Primary reason I updated to the iPad 3 - retina + taking advantage of my unlimited data plan on LTE

I was resuming from watching it earlier on a different appletv. Since I was just resuming from an earlier point, I wouldn't think it would buffer the start of the movie. It did start where I left off.

Me too! Maybe Verizon will crunch the numbers again and come up with a monthly fee for TRUE unlimited LTE that is affordable and won't adversely affect their ability to deliver these high speeds. I'd pay and drop my broadband.

Just disable LTE if you are going nuts loading stuff at light speed because of the faster speed. Then it's nice and slow and sips bandwidth. Again it's user error, not LTE speeds that's at fault.

I'm not complaining... I'm answering the question of, "How going to web pages uses more data?" The user uses it more due to the speed...

They're not going to. They are smart enough to realize that while they can allow unlimited until September, by the end of this CY it is going to start getting loaded, and they will have to start managing capacity, and probably start selectively throttling unlimited users. Even a 10x10 rollout can't handle unlimited.

What they should do is add double your data over to the iPad and Mifi plans for 4G LTE devices to encourage 4G LTE adoption, and take advantage of the greenfield spectrum and spectral efficiency of LTE.

It gets better....

Why until September? The date they cut them off..?

And yeah...it's easy to burn through data with LTE...

is there any way to take advantage of the super fast upload speed? like what web processes improve with a higher upload speed?

Well...if you do a lot of uploading it will improve. Most people don't upload much so it's more of a moot point (although browsers upload to send actions to the server, etc. but they use a tiny amount of data in doing so).

I guess you could seed torrents to take advantage of the upload speed. Or host a website lmao.
