Yeah I thought it looked sweet when I saw the pictures but it doesn't look like that in person. Look up google images of the space grey. I think what makes it look so awkward is that the ring on the space grey version isn't really space grey colored. It's more....black.

Granted it's not something I'd called ugly, but it definitely looks odd. And I'd almost go as far to say it looks like the outcast of the family when comparing to the gold and silver model's rings LOL

----------

I don't mean to be like the ultimate pessimist or anything (and don't use my own opinions to sway your decision - please) but this whole space grey business might actually get me to buy the gold or silver this time around. I never in a million years would have considered not getting a black phone, but the "dark silver" isn't really doing anything for me. I really hate the contrast of the space grey color and the black glass pieces on the back, and the "black" ring doesn't look nearly as nice (IMO) as the silver/gold ring. If they had made the ring more space grey colored my opinion would be vastly different (on the front) but since it's black, and blends in; it just kinda looks kinda naked. Like a de-badged automobile.

Oh weird! I didn't realize it looked that strange. Seems more like an iPhone ripoff than a legit model. They should have gone with a lighter ring color. Looks cheap. Glad I skipped this year for the first time.

Otherwise I do like the space gray color, despite it being one of the dumbest color names out there. What exactly about space is gray? Anyway, I like the graphite look of it as it looks the closest to the original iPhone. Can't wait to get my space gray iPad Air or iPad Mini Retina.

Everyone keeps saying that about the name. BMW has been using the color Space Grey for a long time. They borrowed it from them. Type Space Grey in google you will see multiple lines of BMW models :D. Anyway I agree that the color itself isn't "unattractive" - however I think it looks much more appealing on the iPad 5/Retina Mini. The reason for that is it is purely space grey on the back of those devices. With the iPhone you have the black glass which clashes quite strongly.

It does still look..odd to me, the way the home button is on the 5s. Even though I understand the grey look comes from it being embedded a little bit further in - it just looks eh. I can't appreciate it, idk why. I may get the space grey and after a few months or a year get it custom anodized. I'd go with red (keeping the black glass).

Here's an example - red and black is my favorite color combination

Report back tomorrow when you've fondled your copy for a while. ^^

I will do so, if I get it tomorrow. I will most likely be getting it within the next couple days if I go with the Space Grey! And if I do I will report on it.

But idk, I just kind of have a bad feeling about it. I like black phones, but having a bad feeling about something is never a good idea - I think it signifies that I'll regret it. Idk, 2-4 weeks is a crazy wait for the gold color

Yeah, and I'm more of a Mercedes guy. Not that I own one (my dad has a decent one, and my cousin has this monster one with 12 cylinders http://twitter.com/aacduke/status/318462577304805378/photo/1), I just think they have a better design. Weird that Apple copied that. I still think it sounds lame. It feels like it's overly trying to sound cool, if that makes sense?

I've really been thinking lately that red and black is the way to go. Those are the colors I used in my new mac cave and my iPad should match! Well actually the black is more of a dark cool gray. Thinking space gray iPad wouldn't be too far off and the red is pretty close to the new smart cover. Though the green is slick too. Will probably get the new Speck clear shell for the back that has a magnet to keep the cover open. Though I'd like to try out the new leather smart cases, I just remember how bad the old ones seemed to be. I never had one, but some friends did and they felt uncomfortable with the sharp edge and didn't look that great.

not a fan of the contrasting button color based on these pics. and i would have preferred that left the old icon on the button. it looks too sterile as is...almost unfinished in a way.

I will comment on your post later. I am slightly intoxicated and so will leave my quality response to be typed out tomorrow :)

I agree completely! That's what I mentioned (in my own words - I said it looks too "naked" I think I said) in earlier posts. Looks odd

Idk if they really copied it, but I guess so cus I don't think I've realized that color in many other products in the past. Idk why everyone is up in arms over the name. I first saw (read) the color on a BMW vehicle description and didn't think twice about it seeming tacky, but I can see why people think that. If you'd known it was a car color first, you probably wouldn't think it was tacky. But seeing as most people think Apple is the first to use it, it does seem like they were trying to be "hip" with the name in their iPhone line-up.

Wow the V-12 must be pretty ridiculous haha. I'm definitely a BMW/Porche guy, I've driven many Mercedes and the ride is just way too muted for me. You have to appreciate them though, they are essentially still what they used to be. In bavaria they'd been known as the heaviest wagons with the most power. That's still kind of their theme today.

Red and Black has been my favorite combo since I was like 8 and saw a red and black soccer ball hah. Red's always been my favorite stand alone though. I'd be crazy to make a "black and red" colored room, but that is the color of my room's wall and trim at home :D.

Overall I think space-grey is a great color for matching up with other products and things in your house. Should look nice with any metal you have in the room/house too. I'm not crazy about matching, but I do feel slightly uncomfortable if it's way off base (not that a phone really matters to me for matching - since it's not a static object like a couch)

How would one go about to anodize a phone or iPad and what would it cost? I assume warranties are void when you do it.

Did you have a look on the phone today Vanilla?

Hey guys! I have gotten my new phone, actually as of two days ago. I'm kind of in the middle of....returning it multiple times. See the last two threads that I started about that. I guess the rattling power button is "normal" and that "all" iPhone 5S' have it. A shame really, but if I'd known that I would have never made an exchange to begin with.

Anyway, about the color, I got space grey! I do like it very much. It's not one of those colors where I look at it and I'm like wow I'm in love :) (Like I am with "Sparkling Graphite Metallic" BMW's :D) but I do like it quite a bit. I'm not exactly attached to it as I kinda already mentioned but it gives the phone a much more modern look IMO over the slate. I would take a stab at saying the comparison (in the overall "effect" of the color) between the slate and space grey would be to say that the slate seems like it was introduced in 2009, whereas the space grey seems more atypical to 2013 and looks more modern. It actually kind of gives the phone a more industrial look as well.

Regarding the home button. It's like 80-90% black color and maybe 10-20% space grey. It's basically a purely black ring. But it doesn't look nearly as "sterile" (good way to describe the accused negative aspect of design) as it seems in pictures. It looks well balanced and I would just say it looks different than the white counterparts, but it's not really any worse. To be honest, as it was already put, if you like black phones you will enjoy it.

Was there anything else that needed to be addressed? I'm an open book! I love answering questions so lemme know if there was anything else.

The TouchID home button feels higher quality to me. The plastic home buttons tend to be placed a little inconsistently. Sometimes they're sunken in too low, sometimes they stick out above the glass and sometimes they're perfectly flush.

The new TouchID home button on my iPhone 5s feels perfect.

That's great, I think it does too. My replacement model just feels a little less high quality, and has a rather annoyingly loud click. Moreso than the original model I had

Anyone else a tad disappointed that they stuck with the old home buttons? The newer looked far better in my opinion and regardless of touch ID or no touch ID, I would have liked to see them. The gold color not being there I don't really care about myself, but I sure would have liked the new home buttons.

It sucks owning a 5s because my muscle memory adapted to the sensor. Now I have to go back a fourth.

Congrats. About the ring, if I was in charge of the design, I would probably have made it matte instead of glossy as it is now, and maaayyybeee make it SLIGHTLY brighter gray than the space gray, just to make it more visible, as small details tend to appear darker than larger bits. But since Im not I will be satisfied enough as it is. :p

I can imagine a slight frustration with that. Maybe I will not use a lock for mine, Im not sure how much I will use it in public places anyway, the iPad mini that is.

I like old if no touch id, but I also like new with touch id as well :)

Id deffo go for touch id button either way :)
