I am saying this for years.
Finally, people sees this.

I don't want smart things made by companies other than Apple.
They dont have the expertise to be on the same level as Apple got me used to.

TV brands, please, concentrate in what YOU are good: making good panels, NOTHING MORE.

Even an Apple Smart TV would be pointless in the long run.

TVs last a VERY LONG TIME. I'm still using a Sony Bravia from 2009 in my office at home. Think about a 2009 Apple TV. It's pretty much completely useless today.

Keep the smarts outside of the TV, so we can keep upgrading the smarts and keep using the TV.

That's lovely. My less than 3 year old 55" LG OLED that was in the $2500 to $3000 range won't get this, even though it is fully capable of supporting this with a software update?

Way to go, LG.

As soon as someone besides LG releases a decent OLED, I'm likely to switch.

I prefer Sony OLED in every way. Especially when it comes to motion with panning shots. Their motion software makes them superior.

And this, my friends, is why Smart TVs are such bull****. Your three year old TV, which still has a beautifully capable display panel, can't be upgraded to support current standards.

I wish it were still possible to buy a truly dumb TV. HDMI inputs are all I need. Plug in my Apple TV and it's done. When the Apple TV becomes obsolete, I upgrade it instead of replacing the whole TV.

Smart TVs also have security and privacy concerns. Complete, total fail.
There's clearly some planned obsolescence going on here, which is often what you'll get when one company maintains both the hardware and software. They're not incentivized to keep the feature-set or software current on older models.

Apple does it with the Mac as well. 7 years of current software and 9 years of security updates may seem like enough, but it's well below what you'd get on Linux or Windows machines, and 7-year-old hardware is still quite capable nowadays. Combine that with the yearly frequency of MacOS releases, ensuring developers have little incentive to support older versions, plus Apple's refusal to support even one version back with Xcode, and it's easy to see why this is concerning.

In fact, I still use a 12-year-old Late 2006 24" iMac as a smart TV. Decent 1080p panel, but having it stuck on Mountain Lion is a major annoyance.

It's hard to appreciate the Netflix and Amazon ads that are permanently a part of the remotes, the large ads in the user interfaces, and the built-in spyware that sends images of what you're watching to advertisers to associate with your IP address and send your family targeted ads.

None of our, nor my family members TVs have that. They have smart apps, that we never use or see. We use an Apple TV. In fact, we don't even have to use the TV remote, as the Apple TV remote also turns on and off the tv and changes volume.

You want me to ignore the features I don't want that I end up paying hundreds of dollars for

And tell me what TVs used to be like, because if they're dumb I'd happily go back to that

There is no way whatsoever that you are paying 'hundreds of dollars" more for smart tv versions. Entire 4K TVs can now be bought for hundreds of dollars. And if you are serious, go on to Craigslist, and search for CRT TVs Cathode ray tube). Aside from being ginormous, and extremely heavy (took two of us to move a 32" Sony Trinitron TV).. the picture quality is absolutely light years behind modern TVs. If you would rather that than having some features you don't have to use, well, ugh.

My tv updated today from 4.10.xx to 5.10.10
It is a SK80 model
I can’t find any apple support in the menus etc

Anyone else got it working or am I due another update?

Which is actually more subtle that the very first row of Apple TV that fills your screen with ads for Apple's movies and music.

You are right and i was thinking about that when writing my post. Also, i just buy mac minis because of that!

So, is there any good dumb TV (55''-70'') in the market?

We have one Visio that has a remote identical to that one. But since we don't use the "smart" features, and just use Apple TV, there is no need for the remote. We only use the Apple TV remote. If you and the other person want non-smart TVs and prefer to just use Apple TV as we do... I would assume you would be doing the same. And that particular Tv, although having those smart apps, never bothers us... I can't recall ever seeing a single ad on it.
At this point I think the price difference between them having apps and not is negligible. Even a while back (several years ago) I remember them having both smart and non-smart versions, with around $30 difference.

This whole 'why force us to buy it" argument to me is identical to the people who sue McDonald's because when they ask for their burger without a pickle they are still charged for it.

Somewhere in an alternate universe:

"Why would LG even offer a firmware upgrade to enable AirPlay and HomeKit if they knew it was going to make my TV basically unusable?"

"Does anyone know how to downgrade an LG TV's firmware?"

This is what stopping me from replacing my plasma...Thats great that Sony is able to resolve this issue but too bad Sony OLED are never on sale like the way LG's are.

keep the plasma until it dies. LEDs are really closing the gap, especially with HDR content since they can go so bright. I’m looking to go 75”+ for my next set, and it LED may be the route I go.

Yeah for me theres no point upgrading from a 60" to a 65". The LG 77" is just too expensive right now. The burn in on these LG oled is another reason why i havent made the jump yet. I did check out the new Samsung 9 series and man their LED is getting very close to a OLED in terms of pq and you dont have to worry about burn in.

Mine is the 2019 SM9010 and it updated a couple of days ago but no evidence at all of any airplay2 functionality. Not showing up in the home app on my phone.

Wonder if we are due another update or if our TVs ain’t compatible

Looks like July 29th is the real update date, according to a Mod on LG forums.

"Airplay 2 will be pushed to the 2019 OLED & NanoCell models starting 7/29/2019. The update for the UHD TVs will happen in October."

And the update for 2019 LGTVs was released today. TV can be added to Home as a HomeKit device and also appears as a airplay device

That is the update, when I restarted my tv after it updated, it gave me the option to try it out. It should be there with that update.

Without appearing stupid. How do you “restart” your TV. I had this update last week and nothing shows up re AirPlay or HomeKit. Neither on my phone or TV.

I just turned mine off and back on, and the update wasn't the one from last week. There was a new update yesterday, the one from last week didn't have Airplay or Homekit, that was pushed yesterday.

Hmm I did look for an update today and yesterday but nothing was showing.

I’m confused though. You said in an earlier post that 03.60.19 was the relevant update but now that it’s not. So what is your software update called?

Ironically I had an update arrive yesterday for a 2018 NanoCell set.
