When I got home from work I received the following when I opened the home app.

So I enabled, turned on notifications. Pressed the test button on one the smokes nearest to HomePod. No notifications or announcements from
HomePod.

Just gonna say it, since nobody else has yet: this means it is constantly listening to its surroundings. May mean something, may not, but that means for this to work it must be constantly vigilant to the sounds around it.

Just a thought.
of course it is.....

how else can it respond to a 'hey Siri' command.

The point being that t does nothing until it hears Hey Siri....
... and now it will also do something if if hears an alarm.

Hardly revelatory.....

It’s listed as a feature on the UK HomePod page.

The ‘Safety & Security’ option popped up for me in the Home Settings menu in the Home app but has since disappeared.

Wonder if the feature already got pulled because people are already reporting problems. Do they even test this [redacted] before pushing it out?

Or most likely it’s simply a staggered rollout.

Edit: The banner just showed up for me here in the Netherlands. So the feature is definitely not US only.

The Sound Recognition feature that is built into the latest version of the HomePod and the HomePod mini is now able to detect the beeping of a smoke alarm, sending you an alert if there is an emergency situation.

HomePod-2-and-Mini-feature-1.jpg

Announced when the new HomePod debuted in January, the Sound Recognition option is available as of today, according to TechCrunch. It can detect both activated smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, sending a notification to an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch.

If you're at home, you're going to hear a smoke alarm go off, but if you're away, it is a useful feature to ensure that you're alerted as soon as possible when smoke or carbon monoxide is detected. Some smoke detectors are smart and are able to send alerts, but for those who have standard hardware, the HomePod offers peace of mind.

Smoke alarm Sound Recognition can be set up using the Home app on an Apple device. HomeKit setups that incorporate a camera will be able to send a video along with the alert so that you can see at a glance what might be wrong and react accordingly.

Sound Recognition is done through the HomePod or HomePod mini and the alert is sent from device to device, with no involvement of Apple's cloud servers.

An added bonus for my £300 😊

Works. Had to reboot my phone followed by the HomePods.

I enabled and tried to test it when panel showed up in the home app. Rebooted phone and iPod mini v2 and now the safety and security option disappeared from the home app settings.

Another successful rollout, Apple!

Meanwhile, my Echo Show and Kidde RemoteLync detect both smokes and co2. The RemoteLync you have to train. The Echo just worked.

Hey, Apple, you might want to reach out to either Amazon or Kidde for some pointers.

Likewise in the UK 😊

Fair point. I don't have anything like it at home, and forgot that; my bad. I guess it's already been an accepted fact to have devices constantly listening with high tech and highly sensitive microphone arrays. Enjoy the new feature, I suppose!
I hate to pee on both your bonfires, however it senses the smoke, not hear it through the mike 🤣

I have 12 Nest protests with homebridge I already get those alerts. Cool feature tho i hope it wont duplicate alerts i already get.
Since Nest has an atypical sound when it alerts, be interesting if the HomePod will pick up on it. Also wonder it how it handles HomeKit compatible detectors that already integrate. Assuming this is just for dumb detectors.

Maybe it’s just not displaying correctly but in the Sound Recognition section it is just showing one full size HomePod whereas I have two in the home.

Will try rebooting the mini and see if it pops up.
I tried rebooting with no luck. I had to remove my HomePods and re-add them one at a time before they showed up under Sound Recognition, although I was pleasantly surprised to discover the feature does indeed work on the original 2018 HomePod. Ironically, it was one of my original HomePods that got the feature first :D

It even offered it to me when I was adding it back on my iPhone...

It clearly says open your Home App 😁
Yup, except that banner wasn't there for most of us eager beavers earlier today :D

It only seems to have begun appearing for some folks around 3–4 p.m. ET, but in my case I've still got nothing prompting me to set it up — I had to restart my iPhone before the "Safety & Security" option even appeared in Home Settings, and it was greyed out and inaccessible until I removed one of my HomePods and re-added it from scratch.
