Almost sounds like Apple paid these so-called "reviewers." Give me a break...if these things are that loud are they going to create sound rooms in Apple Stores so people who crank them up to 65%-100% do not bother the ENTIRE store, especially those for the "Today at Apple" classes, let alone people just browsing Apple Stores.

:apple:

So based on the reviewer, I can essentially place this center to the wall of my Bedroom. Play music and I can clear Stereo separation and Bass? It's just one speaker, so how would it be possible to get clear room filling sound with clear left, right channels?

The HomePod WILL play ripped CDs etc from iTunes as it will appear as an AirPlay speaker. You can also play ripped CDS that have been synced to e.g. your iPhone, again selecting the HomePod as an AirPlay speaker.

You know, I'd sure like to believe that. Nowhere has it been described that it can do this, we are just assuming that having AirPlay 2 is enough to support this mode and it better or I will be returning mine.

Having said that, the specs say the speaker supports Bluetooth 5... what's the point of Bluetooth if I cannot stream any of my personal music to it? So at the least that better work. But BT has distance limitations, not to mention audio quality issues, so personal music streamed over wi-fi is a MUST.

Another miss:

"Can it play non-purchased music from iTunes?"

No.

Are you saying that it cannot play music via airplay from an iTunes library? Or are you saying it cannot play from an iTunes library via voice commands?

Two completely different situations there.

That’s great but keep in mind everyone is not an audiophile and you don’t necessarily have to have 1200 speakers to enjoy music.

Personally I’m getting a HomePod and I really think it’s sad that someone is attempting to look down on others just because they aren’t audiophiles.
Well personally many of us think it’s kinda sad for someone to blindly defend a company. I may get one for the kitchen. Or garage. As my 1200 speakers are cluttering up my place.

As opposed to blindly dismissing the comments of people who have experienced the new product?

I'm going to wait to actually hear one, but it sure reads as if Apple has created a leading audio experience in this price range.

It doesn't run apps, so how do you propose such support? As it is, it's pretty much the same as the Sonos system, which people seem to be happy with, since you can stream anything to the speaker from your Mac, iPhone, iPad, or AppleTV. With Sonos, you run an app on your device to stream to the speaker. With iOS, you run an app on your device to stream to the speaker.

I’m lazy and just want to be able to tell it to play (Insert station) on TuneIn or play 80s on 8 on SiriusXM. If I have to do everything on my phone, it’s no different than any other Bluetooth/Airplay speaker. I guess I just wanted it to be an Echo killer and it’s not that.

"it sounds great no matter where you are in the room". It is very likely that the speaker was set up in the center of the room which it will almost never be for actual customers. Not that it is important just shows the reviewer state of mind.

Oh man, I am so looking forward to reading tech reviewers evaluating speakers and sound systems. Already I am reading the HomePod is "audiophile" quality along with being an "aural triumph" and "ultra-high-quality." This is flat out hilarious. I have a 15K rig and my system still has flaws which requires upgrades and it also is not close to being considered "ultra-high-quality." This is going to be good.

I bought a RIVA Turbo X a year ago and have been really happy with the sound. Wonder if HomePod would actually sound better.

My biggest question is this:

How is there even a comparison to this and a Sonos? This is a 7.1 omnidirectional speaker designed to fill a room with sound (like music, and Siri’s unsexy voice), not a directional driver intended for focused attention, like a show or film would perform best with.

Can we please get back on track with the fact this is an over engineered, although likely superior option to an Alexa or Google speaker?

I think WE made this compare with Sonos. Why? Because priced at $349 mostly on only the strength of "better quality speaker," we needed to position $349 more toward comparable... or even a bargain, instead of trying to rationalize most expensive of the smart-speaker category.

I think we knew we could NOT easily rally around Siri as the "smart"(est) part.

If it's solely about better speaker hardware, it's easy to swap out speakers. In fact, the direct competitors have separated their smart speaker brains from the speaker in products like Dot. Buy a dirt-cheap Dot-type device and attach it to ANY quality of speaker.

So, we quickly decided that this needed to compete with Sonos so that the price could even "win" against select products... like rationalizing the Gold Apple Watch against Rolex and similar back when that product launched.

Else, as you seem to imply, there's almost no comparison. Personally, I see this trying to be Deluxe Echo much more than I see this trying to be a Sonos competitor. My own hope is that Apple sees it that way too and is going to roll out a Siri upgrade that makes this "smarter" than Alexa, Cortana, Google... and release a much smarter Siri to the rest of the Apple hardware I already own. From my perspective, that's the BIG "win" here for the bulk of us consumers... but mostly because I already have great speakers, some of which are already partially voice "controlled" by Siri via :apple:TVs.

It will be exciting to see and hear what this can actually do though. Maybe there's a hidden "one more thing" not yet evident? Maybe there's some breakthrough innovation not available from competitors entirely focused on trying to build the best speakers in the world? etc. All TBD... soon!

Sounds like a live performance......are you f****** kidding ! This is a pr stunt because it sure is not an honest review. I have rarely read such hyperbole on this site. And that is really saying something. What a load!

"equating HomePod's sound quality to a live performance."

Put this guy in front of some Martin Logans and his head will probably explode. lol, such hyperbole.
Can you really be called a tech reviewer when you equate the sound from a small speaker to that of a live performance? This guy sucks.

Someone can be entitled to the opinion that Limp Bizkit is the greatest band of all time. That doesn't mean most people won't think they're stupid and have no taste.

Well typically “most people” don’t base their personal opinion on what “most people” think.

Why some folks think they must operate as a hive mind I will never understand. Instead of bashing people because there is a different viewpoint. What happened to agreeing to disagree and leaving it at that?

I have Martin Logan Electrostatic floor speakers for right and left and Martin Logan Electrostatic Center Channel speaker for home theater...all speakers require AC power to charge the panels......once you hear this kind of speaker...then any little speaker would sound very small. For some people this Apple speaker is good enough...not for audiophiles.
I'd lobe to hear a set. Wonder if I could tell the difference.

Even Apple has written it down (right on the HomePod Overview page about half way down) for any of us to go see for ourselves that one needs TWO (2) HomePods + a future software update for stereo.

A bunch of us are in closet marketer mode, spinning anything & everything to help Apple sell this thing... like Apple desperately needs our help. Or perhaps just trying to justify our own purchase to ourselves?

If you read enough of the HomePod posts, you might start thinking your local IMAX theatre could jettison what is probably hundreds of thousands of dollars in speakers all over the theater and just set one of these down front, centered under the screen... and get the exact same effect. ;)

I thought the same thing, but still opted for white. Over time it’ll become “Off-White” which will be nice Lol. If the other option was BLACK I would be totally for it.

Kinda of tired of Apple’s obsession with “space gray”.

I'm not tired of the color itself, but I am tired of it being named "space gray". Who thought of this? Is there something in space that is gray that I am not thinking of?

For this audiophile, I'm expecting the HomePod to be more than adequate for the kitchen and garage ... the good stuff can stay in its room for critical listening.
Yes, exactly. The music that really knocks my socks off can't be replicated by less than fifty sound generating devices anyway.

And if you've got a good setup, turn it up and play these; lemme know what the neighbors say. ;)
(btw, this drum corps stuff is quite the rabbit hole to go down if you're wiling to take a drink)
