In a far fetched dream I can see Apple opening the iPhone 8 reveal segment of the keynote and say something like "You didn't think we would just include facial recognition to unlock your device did you?" whilst showing how they profoundly engineered the Touch ID to be located under the glass panel..... Now that would be quality trolling

Marketing at its finest. Just another way of Apple trolling us weeks before the September Keynote to keep all us all triggered. It's working.
My thoughts exactly. I've always suspected some 'leaks' come from within, and if not to titillate us, certainly to stall potential purchasers of competing products long enough to check out the newly released Apple goodies.

Question asked to learn - How does it know that you're not having a picture being used for facial recognition?
I think the rumor is that it uses more than one camera to do facial recognition, and it expects your head to be a three-dimensional object. You might be able to fool it by building a 3D model of your head with a photo mapped onto your features. I'm certain that if this rumor turns out to be true, people will set out to defeat it. Some may succeed, but it likely won't be practical for going on a shopping spree.

Chances are our most secure biometrics will be easily defeated someday:

Still doesn't mean no Touch ID.
If so, it has to be virtual.

All I can hope for is that this can all be disabled. I do not want people I take pictures of to have their faces processed and identified. One person I was with a couple of weeks ago would not let her face be shown in the images I published. She is a member of the security services so that is understandable. So she took the pictures instead.
Sorry if that goes against the general trend but I'm an ornery sort of person.
If it can't be disabled then I will use my iPhone camera a who lot less than now.

this isn't particualrly interesting IMO - this seems like basic scene sensing that point and shoot cameras have been doing for years, plus some facial recognition often used for 'smile shutter' and things like that.

I hope those features will make it on iPhone 7s and 7s+
If ML is involved most of the work should be done in the SoC so they could make it available on the less expensive models as well

Intresting! this homepod firmware have so many solid leaks. Apple did it for purpose To keep hype up for iPhone 8. Five Weeks to Go :)

I know a lot of people are saying this, but I have my doubts.... AFAIK all this information is only circulating within sites like MacRumors to an audience who will already be well aware that there's a new iPhone on the way - even though they might not have decided whether to buy one, they'll be well educated enough after the keynote to make that decision, any 'accidental leaks' aren't going to influence that.

No, I'd suggest it's within the non-techy population where Apple would want to stir up hype, and I don't see FaceID or a narrower bezel as the current hot topic of conversation around the water cooler.

I'm not sure what you currently do with your photos once you've taken them, but most photo software already does this - the difference is this is doing it at the point of taking the photo rather than afterwards within Photos (or whatever app/program your using) on your phone or computer.

It would be hilarious if HomePod confuses a crawling baby with a family pet.

The current feature in iOS11 and OSX Photos already mixes my kids up with the cat and thinks a tractor wheel is my wife, so I'm sure the hilarity will ensue.

Here you go. From the article:
"The HomePod firmware contains hints about future iOS 11 functionality and the iPhone 8 because the HomePod runs a full version of iOS. The current version of iOS 11 in testing has been stripped of references to unreleased features, but Apple neglected to make the same edits to the HomePod firmware, allowing enterprising developers to dig up the company's secrets."
Does the AppleTV have the same full version? Why would they put the firmware for every device into each version of iOS? Why do they need different versions of iOS for iPad and iPhones if it's all contained in the one file?

I mostly use a Nikon D810 or D500 DSLR plus lenses from 10mm up to a 500mm F4 and Lightroom. I don't use Photos unless I have to. No facial recog there thank god. My iPhone is for other uses. The last thing I want is things like the EXIF data being messed around with or other Identification of the people in the picture. In some places that seemingly simple thing means that I have to get signed releases for all the people ID's even though the picture was taken in a public place with no expectation of privacy.
All those tourists taking Selfies could soon find themselves in jail in some parts of the world. In those places, you don't mess with the police. Just like having the exact location of speed cameras shown on a SatNav in France is illegal but not in Spain. Different places, different rules.

Siri + face recognition + scene recognition + 3D environment mapping.

If HomePod is also an robot vacuum cleaner, I would buy It.

Siri, go clean the living room!!!

Cool! It can see when I have fireworks in the room!

they will use Infrared Cameras for depth and to image in the dark/low light. a photo doesn't fool it because it would just see a flat surface. Infrared Cameras have already leaked as being on this device.
