I understand HomePod needs to charge, but why is it non-detachable? A really bad design decision in 2020, IMO, especially considering they advertise it as being easy to move around places. Our 2015 small Bose Bluetooth speaker has a small female USB port, so we can charge it as needed and then move around. Go figure... 🤷🏻‍♂️

Let me get this straight, Apple includes a charger with this but not with the expensive iphones. Hmm, I thought Apple was trying to save the environment by not shipping wall chargers since we all have so many of them?

You're trolling right? The number of HomePods in the world is insignificant compared to the number of iPhones.

Puppy + cable = chew. That’s a nice $99 new toy.

Great post - thanks for sharing problems related to your life style choices.

The original HomePod's cable absolutely IS detachable... it's come out when I’ve knocked my HomePod off its perch, and the Lounge HomePod's cable is fed to it via a small hole in the wall: I had to detach it to do that.

they should have made the top panel a Qi charger.

better yet, a MagSafe charger and just pass through the controls to the iPhone screen
They need to hold back a feature or two for the next model. lol. I suggested an actual screen like an echo show would be more useful.

Awesome it immediately crossed my mind when I checked the wattage on this thing to replace it with usb c and now this isn’t even necessary and you even get a charger. Great stuff

Not a great analogy, in some cases they are - in fact it is common for power cables for clothes dryers to be sold separately. Besides such devices aren’t intended to be placed on a surf in the middle of the room.

surf? I’ve never seen a clothes dryer with a power cable not wired in directly.

I don't know where you live, but in North America, clothes dryers plug into outlets. Washers typically use regular 110V while dryers typically have heavier duty 220V outlets with a special shape.

Am I the only person who thinks the mini looks like the Ood's translation sphere?

We should probably wait until iFixit tears one of these down before we pass judgement. The cord may be easier to replace than we think. Or it could be a nightmare.

No i’m not. Cords are subject to wear and tear. They are actually the most common part to break. Apple Geniuses hand them out like candy because people are constantly bringing in cables. And apple’s are notoriously fragile.

I don’t see how. I still have mine from my iPhone 6s. What are you all doing with these cables that they “constantly” break?

Oh...

I had actually thought of buying a Homepod, but will pass on it now. To have a 'portable speaker' with a hard attached power cable is insane. It would be as stupid as having an 'ebike' with an attached power cable that you need to keep wrapped up and/or dangling as you rode it. Or having a power cable attached to an electric car that you need to coil up on the car. Yikes!!!

Stupid on a rope? At least they could have made it easier to remove, and user replaceable. What kind of crazy stuff is this? Damn... I thought it WAS removable. Just crazy...

Yeah, it’s pretty silly. USB C to Lightning?! Come on Apple, should’ve gave us USB C adapters and cables at least 3 years before the shift.

you are telling us you have absolutely no usb c adaptors (apple brand or not) in your house that is unused? None.... not a single one?

You do realize this is not a portable speaker? This is why it has a permanent cable. If it was a portable speaker, it would have an internal battery.

I’d like to see different versions available. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a version with an aux out so I can plug it into my stereo. That would make it a smart airport express that I really need. Another version could be portable. Unfortunately this version is just not it for me.

Yet they never show the power cord connected in their ads. So are they lying? Is it a 'touchy subject'? If they won't show the cable in their ads, why the heck is it 'permanently attached'? It must embarrass them, and they are hiding it. What other 'portable speaker' has an attached cable? YIKES!!! (They never show the cable, but never show 'the hole' either.

They could have used MagSafe on these. Good grief...

EDIT: I guess my point is that the mini is small enough to be 'portable', and having an attached cord isn't. It's an odd product for this day and age... Like soap on a rope. Great idea 'way back when', not so needed, appreciated now.

Yeah! Since they have a 'permanently attached' power cord, why not an ugly 3.5mm 'AUX-IN' jack to further date this hot mess. Wow...

Oh, I thought it was a 'portable speaker'. DOH!!! So the better question is probably 'Why make a portable speaker sized stationary speaker'. So this is a second attempt at an 'Apple Hi-Fi'? Oh, with Bluetooth now. Who designed this? If it looks like a portable speaker, shouldn't it BE a portable speaker? Tying it to a power plug is so dated...

Sorry to be a bit off topic but the US has not used 110/220V in quite some time. We’ve been 120/240V since before most people on this forum have been alive. I’m referring to typical home distribution which is 120/240V split phase with two “hots” and a neutral. I know some people still use 110/220V to describe residential electric service, and it’s not hard to follow what is meant, but I figure it’s worth an effort to be accurate even if the general concept is being conveyed either way.

It would have been innovative and nice if they made such a small speaker truly wireless by incorporating a MagSafe charger into the bottom of the Mini, so you could just pick it up and take it with you.
