This was an onboard rechargeable battery away from a purchase for this guy. It was the new device I found most interesting this cycle - until I realized it required a power cable. Boo that!

Oh well. Maybe next year.

If everybody bought third party then yes, they won’t make a profit (still will save some money not providing one, though, which I suspect is the main reason).

But that’s not what’s going to happen: some people will buy from apple, where they’ll make a profit, some from third parties, leaving apple with no gain from that sales, and some people will indeed buy none because have a way of charging the phone already.
And just what exactly is wrong with Apple making a profit? They are running business. That's how a business remains in business, via profits. You sound like you don't want Apple to make profits. If that's how you truly feel then you basically don't want Apple to be in business because just like Microsoft, Samsung, Sony, HP and Lenovo, they are not your friends. They are companies running a business for profit.

No, they should not have. Balancing a phone on top of a sphere and covering up the controls?

I'm only half kidding, but to respond to your comment:

1. Top of the HomePod is flat. It'll balance fine. In fact, the flat circle on top of the HomePod mini is about the same size and same shape as my Qi charger, judging from the AR demo on their website.
2. If it's a problem, build in MagSafe into it to keep the phone in place. Since the HomePod is heavy, it won't require two hands to lift the phone off the MagSafe.
3. Primary interface for HomePod is through voice, not through touch.
4. Pass through the controls. HomePod can detect if the phone is close and it can detect if Qi is sending power, so pass through the touch controls. Won't work with AirPods or Android, which in that case, see #3.

Why are you so mad tho? Are you an Apple employee or what? You sure have spent a good chunk of your day defending a Trillion Dollar company.

What a money grab. Selling insurance on a $99 product (overpriced).
You do not have to buy it, but it’s available for a ridiculous price of $15 whole dollars. Such a money grab. And probably sounds way better than the new google speaker for 99 (overpriced)

That exactly what I said - it's a dealbreaker it's NOT like a bluetooth speaker
No it’s way better than Bluetooth it’s airplay 2

Does anyone know why the HomePod and HomePod mini are not available in various countries in Europe? Neither are/will be sold in Italy (where I am), for example 😭
Regulations in Italy?

Cost, I suspect.

Running off a USB power pack sounds interesting. That and an iPhone as a hotspot, Apple Music should play almost anywhere.

Apple Music could have always played anywhere. Don’t need HomePod for that. I don’t get why people are obsessed with wanting Apple to make a battery powered speaker.

It must be a slow Friday night for folks, all this vitriol over a corded vs detachable cord. Personally, I have 4 homepods, they are excellent sound great, never had a problem. Would consider the minis but you can get homepods for $199 on sale - a heck of a great speaker for the price

So they can play it outside and annoy everyone around them? Here is to baby shark (or anything country) played really loud at the beach or pool

Nice! I always thought why not make most thinks USB-C and plug into a power adapter could potentially make it easier for universal standards. just kind of goofy why the non detachable plug from the HomePod itself.

This sucks. Apple totally hides this cord and makes it seem like these are wireless little balls that you can place around the house. Not plug in with a long cord! Awful.

Was thinking the same thing. The video definitely showed it w/ cords, but then there were shots where they clearly worked to show two units on the same surface with zero visible cords. Not an Apple-basher but I think this was poorly communicated in the marketing video during the event.

Let me get this straight, Apple includes a charger with this but not with the expensive iphones. Hmm, I thought Apple was trying to save the environment by not shipping wall chargers since we all have so many of them?
It makes sense because most phone are replacements so you most likely already have a charger. The HomePod mini would be the the first and probably last of this device type.

Personally, I find it handy to detach the cable for travel, as well as for threading through and around shelves with gaps too narrow for the power plug at the end.

Kind of deceptive not to show the cable in any of their advertising. When viewing it gives the impression that it is portable.

But the design suggests once it is place somewhere, it stays there, like an airport or whatever.

They should have made a rechargeable battery optional unit, but with Siri always listening to you (and recording you 24 hours a day in the name of advancement...) thus needing a consistent power source...

Interesting. I wonder why they didn't just make it detachable. But it does suggest you can operate it from a power bank if need be.

This company has such balls touting environmental responsibility, and they make so many virtually unrepairable products.

A simple USB-C port in the unit itself would have made this so much better. People could get different lenghts if they so desired, and imagine a cool usb-c powerbank that would attach to the bottom.

People writing in don’t realize the homepod’s cable isn’t detachable either. And it’s super durable. There are reports that it CAN be detached, but it’s not recommended. Don’t remember where I read it, but someone disconnected theirs, plugged it back in, and it still worked.

Really? I never once expected that it was portable - I would have expected them to say, “and it’s portable, you can take it anywhere” quite prominently if it had been the case.

I don’t recall any of the advertising for the Mac Pro featuring the power cord - did you assume the Mac Pro was portable and could run on batteries?

There are plenty of external USB based battery packs you could get to plug it into, since it has a standard connector, it doesn’t have to be Apple branded.
