I would like u1 in HomePod but with the 14.3 update handoff is way better already. So good stuff.

They're designed to sit on a table / desk / etc. Why needlessly complicate the design by adding batteries and charging hardware, and then complicate use by having to worry about keeping them charged, and having to worry about battery life? They're speakers - if you add batteries, either they're bigger and heavier, or there's less room for, you know, the actual speaker drivers, lowering sound quality.

Do you also want your TV to be rechargeable? And only plug your TV in when it needs to charge?
The reason to use HomePods mini with a battery is simple. It allows you to deploy them in places that don’t have a readily accessible power outlet. In my case, that would be on the far side of my deck—so I can avoid having to string extension cords that people can trip on. I'm delighted to have this option, afforded by the fact that the HPM has a power cord that ends in a USB plug. Best of both worlds.

Most of the time, I'll use my HPMs plugged into AC power but when the weather gets warm and we finally get COVID under control, it will be nice to be able to use them at outdoor parties.

Didn't even know these could run on batteries!

How long do they last in real world use anymore know?

Awesome. Now we can carry HomePod Minis around town with us and ask Siri where all the deadly Covid hotspots so we can avoid them and also ask Siri where the nearest Cornholio vax centers are so we can get there immediately and get on that special 'safe person for traveling' list.

A questions for those who have got themselves 2 HomePod minis: Is it possible to pair both speakers as stereo set via bluetooth without having to use wifi?

My first mini came with an 18W and would not function. Apple told me I was crazy but replaced it. I own nothing that uses an 18W and did not have anything 20W so I had to track one down to use my mini.

I think this may have something to do with the update ... they shipped some with 18W'ers.

No. Like the originals, these not support bluetooth audio streaming or pairing in any capacity whatsoever. Just wifi.

Can Macrumours create a thread or section for the HomePod and mini? Been wanting to get people’s reactions and uses for it.

Was hoping to get a mini for Christmas but delivery is now well into January. :(
My wife got me one for Christmas and gave me a receipt that should it would be delivered in January. Day after Christmas I was looking at the mini page on apples website and noticed express pickup was available the next day. We cancelled the original order and did the express pickup option. Magically it became available same day. If you live near an Apple store I would check out the pickup option.

Because the HomePod mini is a hub in the HomeKit environment, if the rechargeable battery were to go flat, no more controlling your automated home.
As you state, it's "a hub", not necessarily "the hub". I have plenty of other hubs around my house to handle the load. I would have picked up a couple of these if there were a way to easily use them without a cord. If the cord was detachable it would work great with an external battery, but the long cord is just going to get in the way, I'm afraid.

I was just happy when I opened my Mini for Christmas that it came with a power brick...
Honestly, as someone who does have, Apple power bricks lying around the house mostly unused Apple does have a point. If it was just that then I wouldn't have much to criticize, where this just seems like a marketing scam to boost profits is that there is no evidence that Apple reduced the phones the amount it would've cost them to put them in there and second this would've held more weight if they didn't choose to do this when the power bricks everyone has you cannot use with the new iPhones.

The problem is they are giving usb c cables now and the only brick I have is the one that came with my HomePod mini that I bought 3 days ago.

Because some of us want it - like some of the Bose speakers which have great 360 sound and a battery. Plus an USB port and an optional dedicated charging pad.

Just buy the Bose speaker then if you haven’t already. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ I like that it is plugged in. I have a Bluetooth speaker already and it’s never charged and I never know where it is. Don’t have those problems with my mini.

Totally did, as IMO the Apple speakers in current form are a joke. The Bose speaker "lives" on a charging pad in the office so I always know where it is and it's always charged, but I am free to move it to another room or to the pool when needed. So I get both your approach and mine - and it's always good to have options.

I also have a second Bose in the living room, that one is big and has no battery. As opposed to Apple's stuff it actually has Spotify connect, AirPlay, Bluetooth and line-in so I use it with multiple devices including the record player.

Apple's speakers and headphones need a few more iterations to catch up.

The unit comes with it's own 20W adapter, but users decide to try an 18W adapter. In the next firmware update, users will try a 10W adapter to further save electricity.

Only the technical unknowledgeable would think that. In reality most (cheap) low power adapters aren't very efficient when powered at maximum rating, especially the low power ones like Apple's own mini USB 5W charger.
