I don’t think it’s worth it to buy insurance for a $100 mini speaker that sits in one place in your home the whole time. There will be like a .0001% of people that actually cause accidental damage on these things.

...Some apparently like to blame their cats that will chew the electrical cord. Well, those same people should take more responsibility for their pets. Problem solved.

Apple is making some very stupid decisions lately. They used to be premium products because they worked flawlessly. Now they’re just over priced. This device’s value proposition is Siri. Siri gets worse every iteration and I hear it’s even more terrible on HomePod. No buy
what? they made the homepod cheaper. if the homepod mini was $150, we wouldn’t even have this headline

Wow, I know this is extremely backwards, but let’s hope this thing is built like a tank and any repairs only Apple can perform (aftermarket cables and back-alley replacement services, anyone?) are due to some defect covered by a special repair program. A brand new Series 0 Apple Watch Sport I had to buy under a “repair” program, after my original, very expensive one just had its battery bloat and pop the screen right off, cost me only €50. But this? Essentially giving it to Apple so they can recycle it, I’m almost guessing? Wtf…

What happened to saving the environment? This report seems to fly in the face of that, practically incentivizing people to buy new.

With the mini only costing $99 dollars, I am not about to pay an additional $15 for an extended warranty. Unless it has a hardware defect, it should be fine. I don’t plan on turning the volume up all the way on the mini.

Apple - The champions of the Environment when they told you you cant get a charger and earbuds. But then it comes to repairing your homepod its not worth it. They want you to buy a whole new unit and throw it into landfill. Nice one.

Ahead of the HomePod mini launching next week, Apple has revealed that it will charge a fee of $79 to service the speaker for customers without AppleCare+ coverage. This is only $20 cheaper than buying an entirely new HomePod mini for $99.

By comparison, AppleCare+ for the HomePod mini involves a $15 upfront cost and an additional $15 per-incident fee for up to two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months. Ultimately, if you damage your HomePod mini and need it serviced, it will cost you $30 with AppleCare+ or $79 without in the United States.

While many customers may find AppleCare+ unnecessary for the HomePod mini, those with pets or young children may want to consider purchasing coverage.

HomePod mini pre-orders began November 6, and the speaker launches Monday, November 16.

I’m sorry, maybe it’s a version of sour grapes but there are just so many weaknesses at Apple now that Steve is gone. A bean-counter just doesn’t have the heart to run a special company like Apple. And with Jony departed this counts for double. I am sick and tired of all of these unforced errors.

You guys believe in Apple being environmental friendly? You need to view how many stuff goes to trash cans that are replaced under Apple warranty.

Honestly, when was the last time you had a device like such fail. We're talking about something that sits on your shelf. Do you have a warranty on your stereo speakers?

The reality is that this type of thing rarely fails. If they do, they do so within the first year of ownership, when they're covered by manufacturer warranty.

Seems it's more that people don't consider if they actually need a warranty on a product that's not moved around and has very very little chance of failure. A warranty makes sense on a laptop that's moved around frequently, taken outside the home, and has moving internal parts. But the failure rate of a smart speaker is silly small.
I've had issues with several of my Apple products this year. Maybe I should blame it on #2020, but I've actually purchased new devices JUST SO I could add AppleCare+ after the out of warranty repair cost was so shocking (ie. Apple Watch). I'm so deep into the Apple ecosystem that it would be very disruptive to leave. I just feel the reliability of Apple stuff plus the high repair costs pushes into either upgrading yearly to avoid out of warranty product OR buying AppleCare+ (maybe Apple repairs have always been absurdly expensive, but I didn't know bc my Apple stuff didn't mess up before or there were user-friendly repairs)

You need to chill. Secondly if Apple made such "stupid decisions" they wouldn't be a trillion dollar valuation company and one of the world's largest. Instead they would be just a plain old forum member with no money on a tech site complaining about companies making stupid decisions.

🤣 are you serious? I’m a product designer and they are putting out GARBAGE lately
