Really hoping to try mine out today. Fingers crossed it escapes Fedex purgatory.

Huh, I guess I'm going to tough it out with my current solution: an old iPhone in an air freshener case…

DIY Apple Speaker With Siri.gif

not the point tho.

what happens with the plug/wire goes bad? just have genius bar rip you off as usual?
LOL, what do you do, chew on them? If you have it in a place where the cable can be destroyed, your HomePod is destroyed as well

Epitome of the bad design that very much is happening at Apple these days. Sure, also some good design; but every time I see this kind of thing, just have to facepalm. As for those asking why you'd want to see a replaceable cord, 2 very good use cases: #1 pets eat cords, it happens. And #2 sometimes you want to put stuff on a shelf JUST THAT MUCH FARTHER away from where the built-in cord would reach… would be much nicer to just use a slightly longer cord in those cases. Or, in the opposite case, a shorter cord, so there isn't a big ball of extra cord laying on your desk. Point is, a removable cord is handy, and designing for that would have been easily possible to make happen and increased the "value" of the device immensely. So, a design FAIL for Apple there.
It is the little things, and when you're a company that markets as much as Apple does on "recycling" you MUST do better!

What the AirTag?

If it's not long enough, couldn't you just use a USB-c extension cable?
The pet thing though, yep, very real. As is my damn cat puking on my electronics. 🤭

Just ordered one. Giving it a test drive. I already have 4 Echo Shows and 2 Echo's. I am using this as my computer speaker through AirParrot. We'll see...

Seems like such a short, obvious leap to a wireless charging base so that you could grab the speaker and take it outside, etc. like that one Sonos sells. Missed opportunity IMO.

Unless I'm mis-seeing the image, it looks like there's nice strain relief on the cord and it jacks into the board with a robust ten pin socket. Should the cord be pulled too far accidentally, it'll at least not damage an internal jack or the PCB. For the price, size, and majority of use cases it seems like a reasonable design.

It isn't just a question of damage. Sometimes it can be nice to change the cord just because the length is too long or too short. As an example there's a wall plug I could plug it in in my bathroom that's so close to where the HM could sit that I'd have to coil the cable in a very ugly an inelegant way and no option to hide it.

There really aren't a lot of good reasons to justify the absence of a simple USB-C plug on the HM. That other appliances do the same isn't a sufficient condition to make it a good justification.
