Thanks, I have left feedback with Apple. I also let them know that I am due for an update of my Air and my iPhone but will hold off to see how they handle this. Don't make me go to the dark side, Apple.

They really need to cleanup the whole Home app, control center home app, Air Play because it is a total freaking mess. The most perplexing piece of the Apple ecosystem ever.
Agreed! My Hpods are currently unplugged (or I would try to answer your initial question ). The Home app and how its been designed / implemented leaves a lot to be desired. NOT INTUITIVE AT ALL. Seems to have been done with different groups at Apple not speaking to each other. Side Note: I don't let ANY of my devices update automatically ....and have been an Apple user since the 80s! I always take at least a glance online to see if there are any issues...though some may only surface after an update has been installed.😔

I usually don't have mine set to automatically update but this one slid under the radar. I did turn it off in the settings.

My homepod with 14.7 now, temperature is 38 degrees celsius with siri and intercom on. A lot! Deactivated siri and intercom and dropped to 35 degrees like in a minute. The thing is that i use siri home commands a lot. But don't want to fry the homepod :( hope this is crap derived to backend changes for ios15 and ios15 fixes all before we lose the homepods…

My 4 HomePods are running 14.7, none are stereo-paired. Yesterday the basement one made a loud POP and the volume buttons started blinking. It became unresponsive. Could not complete a manual reset. After hunting around the internet, the only solutions appeared to be: buy a new one (how?) or unplug it for a year.

I’m not about to invest money in another one unless Apple starts building and supporting speakers that last longer than 2-3 years. So I tried unplugging it overnight. Today I was able to reset it without a problem.

I didn’t notice that it was particularly warm, but I suppose I’ll start checking that now and unplugging accordingly. Sheesh. No problems before this latest update. Not cool.

FWIW, my iPhone is running iOS 15 beta. No idea if this has any effect.

Apple will GLADLY offer you “out of warranty” service where you pay $279 to our lord and savior, Timothy D. Cook and give him your defective HomePod.

Sarcasm aside, it’s a great sounding speaker, but the hardware is very poorly designed. I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise considering the direction they took with their 2016 and later MBP models (keyboard failure, display ribbon cable failure, etc)

You’d think they would pick beefy components when designing a circuit rather than running components are their maximum thresholds. I’m sure numerous components rated at 105C are pushed beyond that or kept close to that. Who knows if it’s horrible electrical engineering or the engineers told to try and squeeze out what they can given the space constraints.

A speaker should last a long time. I have some vintage EV speakers from the 1950s. Still working great. Sure they don’t have any active electronics, but there’s plenty of vintage audio gear from the 1970s that hasn’t been restored that still works. Heck even my 2006 iPod HiFi still works.

Have no idea what happened to yours. Mine got warm, I unplugged them then a few os updates later, 1 stopped playing, and I could not update. 6 days, not a year (that’s a bit snarky) later I was able to manually reset and it is working fine

My theories are 1) bad power in house (low voltage, spikes, it was plugged into a splitter - the only one to be and the only one to have a failure) 2) thermal or humidity trip 3) iOS issue that didn’t see reset

why it took 6 days to reset a trip. No idea, that would tend to say humidity, not thermal. In any event, it didn’t take a year to reset

Apple support did call expecting an unhappy customer, but low and behold it was working fine. Sent diagnostics in. But after a reset so no idea how pertinent

my best guess is power issues in home.

You shouldn't be defending Apple if that's the case. If they can't manage to work on regular old household power, which is notorious for not being "clean", they should never have been released. Plugging every homepod into a battery backup system in order to smooth out the electric profile is not acceptable.

Thanks, I’ll take your advice for what it’s worth - nothing. For your information, I have 4 HomePods and two minis, all work flawlessly except the one for a brief mysterious period. If you had bothered to check about power issues you might learn that voltage reductions, spikes, out of phase power, frequency disruptions and all sorts of transience cause disruptions in electronic devices. Have had more problems with Samsung smart tv and even electronically controlled ceiling fan. That versus a HomePod with a temporary issue when plugged into what may be a crappy splitter and an unexplained temporary issue. But sure - Apple

I doubt that. The internal power supply is Delta Electronics, a reputable supplier. Ive taken apart and diagnosed over 7 units, and the power supply never was the culprit. Mostly failed logic boards or failing amplifier boards. I doubt it's humidity related.. otherwise Macs, iPads, HomePod Minis and Apple TVs would be failing left and right as they have no moisture resistance either. It's definitely shoddy engineering and or poor manufacturing. You don't pick components and operate them at the edge of their safe design specs, you pick components that allow for a safety and reliability margin.

If one really thinks it's power, then other devices connected on the same circuit should be failing.

Except mine was on the battery side of a UPS and it still died because of 14.6 and I am not the only one. All of a sudden there is a cluster of Homepods dying of power issues? There was probably something wrong with the control board, a substandard capacitor or transformer which was stressed because of something in the update.

Be very careful. Had a pair of OGs linked and connected to Apple TV running 14.7. Found the slightly older one totally dead. Took it into the Apple store who completely denied there was an issue with Homepoads failing and that the only remedy was to pay AU$420 to get a replacement. That’s AU$1000 investment in my sound system that failed after 3 years. Was told by the Apple Agent that wasn’t much money. Worst customer experience ever. If someone told me this thing only had a 3 year life I would have walked away right then. Why does Apple always deny its own problems and place the cost at the consumers feet. Just not good enough. fanboy now thinking of moving to the dark side.

Yep my older one bit the dust and I had the exact same experience with Apple. I will not ever buy anything audio from them ever. I have speakers that are 30 years old and are still going strong, not one capacitor, coil or resistor having any problem. I finally had to replace the woofer surrounds but yeah after 30 years. I might replace my phone after 3 years but I definitely don't want to replace my speakers after 3. Too bad the speakers were not popular enough to warrant a class action suit.

Same same, never again. Top end audio my…..This was my exact argument with the Apple Agent. You expect speakers to last definitely last more than 5 years and possibly 10 ( if not more). All I got was nothing lasts forever.!! Yes agree far too niche a product for any legal action. I’ve tried to go via fair trading here in Oz but no one wants to take on the big boys. So stuck with one homepod (a pair definitely made the sound so much better) and an expensive door stop. Nice work Apple thanks!

This is awful, I´m so sorry. You were treated in a horrible way.

But maybe not all is lost yet.

Try to call Apple Care and ask for a Senior advisor. Tell your case calmly and politely, including the way you have been treated by the Apple Store agents. Maybe they will grant you a free replacement. Some reports here and over reddit claim to have managed to achieve it this way.

Good luck.

i have trie to reset my homepod: Unplug HomePod, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
Wait 10 seconds, then touch your finger to the top of HomePod and hold it there.
The white spinning light will turn red. Keep your finger down. and nothing, siri is not say,red light off and no beeps

Mine does not turn on at all, no spinning light no nothing.

Yes. Is dead. It doesn’t even turn on when plugging it back again.
Did you figure out how to solve it?
I reported the problem through feedback, unplugged the HomePod and put it in the closet. My appointment ended up being after a week, I pulled it out, plugged it in and it was working. I also increased sound by pressing on the + symbol, it was resetting fine, could hear the chip and everything.

The honeods only seem to have a problem in one room. It is my personal opinion that it is a power problem (frequency, voltage, spikes, who knows) causing the hone pods to run hot. as they are not vented, the heat builds up and they trip. why it takes a week to reset from the trip is beyond me, and lends uncertainty to my theory, but, like I said, only one room. Take the same Hompod to a different room and it works fine (after it starts again)

One other thing it has a google mesh router in "the room", mesh networks have been reported as problematic. I have no idea how that fits in.

I hope mine goes back to life.
I left it unplugged the whole night and today I just plugged it back and is still dead.
I have it in my bedroom, paired with my other HomePod as stereo , and also paired with my Apple TV 4K (new version with the new remote).
It was working just fine until yesterday morning.
Both HomePods and the Apple TV are running 15.1.1

Apple wants $279 to fix the problem basically swap it for a refurbished one.
