Today I update my homepod mini with new 26.6 Beta3, seems the problem mostly has been fixed. I will keep test until next version

Wait, what? The ghost touches have stopped? If so, it turns out it wasnt a hardware issue, after all. Fantastic news.

Two HomePods(2nd Gen) connected as a stereo pair for our living room TV. All working very well. Then v26 hit the HomePods and we experience every odd “feature” in this thread. Disconnected and unplugged HomePods, moved to a shelf in storage. Sad to see them go but just no longer worked.

Anyone else having the problem that with HomePodOS 26 their HomePod randomly starts playing music?
This happened last night and a few minutes ago. Also while using it with Apple TV it randomly stops the video I‘m playing. So annoying and I cannot find the reason.
Yes startet around 2 month after iOS 26

I was going to post a new thread but seems many have this same issue. Mine started over a week ago, homepod 2nd generation, I do NOT have apple music, I had a free trial that ended in June but I canceled it..everyday it will a few times a day start playing random music nonsense, I dont even recognize what it is its just music of some kind..a few days ago in the middle of the night at 4am it did the same thing, today so far its done it twice but for two days prior it stopped. I called apple they told me to reset the device, I did it didnt stop it from happening. So there is some firmware update that will finally fix this craziness? I hope so because its annoying as hell

Same issue. The complete and only fix I’ve found is to unplug the HomePods, and put them in the next garage/yard sale.
I unplugged mine last night and plugged it back in this morning. I do NOT want it turning on at 3am already had that happen to me once. Its just so weird, never had an issue with this homepod, Ive had it for 3 yrs, it sits on my bookshelf, never had one problem then BAM out of the blue this happens its just super weird and whats also weird is that for two days it was fine then it started again, and its not even music that it plays its just weird bopping sounds since I dont have apple music I cant tell whats playing I just tell siri to turn it off..when apple comes out with their next device would apple take this one back as a trade in or something and I can buy the other one?

Yep ours are unplugged now. While it’s weirdly coincidental that they were perfectly fine until the 26.5 update and then very much weren’t, I can’t believe this will be fixed by an update.

I think that because disconnecting or replacing the touch panel evidently resolves the issue, this is likely a component failure/component quality issue. Of course, despite the unusually large number of this product all failing with the exact same issue after a certain period of time, Apple do not acknowledge the issue.

The solution Apple’s senior team proposed to me was that customers should accept that this product class won’t necessarily continue to function beyond 2 years, and they should be simply thrown away and replaced (by purchasing new ones).

I don’t think that’s acceptable and have filed a claim with my bank for a refund as per consumer law in the UK.

I unplugged my Homepod 2nd gen last night before I went to bed, and I plugged it back in this morning at 6am, so far nothing..its weird, luck of the draw, sometimes it can do it constantly while other times it wont do it for 2 days and I think OK its fixed and it will start all over again

I found a final solution of this ghost touch, if you have update iphone or ipad to the latest version, go to setup->chose general-> airplay & continuity->Automatically Airplay, choose Never option rather than automatic. Hope it will helps to everyone.

I have setup the Ask setting on my 2 iphones (one personal, one work).

but how to solve when in the house you have lots of Airplay compatible devices?

My faulty Homepod (alone or in stereo mode) happens to stream also music from AppleTV which uses them as the default speakers

I chatted today with apple and the guy told me to do this:
Open the Home app -> tap the HomePod -> Settings -> Accessibility -> Touch Accommodations. Turn them ON, and set the Hold Duration and Ignore Repeat to the maximum (4.00 seconds).

So that is what I did, should I get rid of that and just do what you suggested or do I need to do what you suggest plus what I did above? Early this morning I had to unplug my homepod it started playing nonsense at 6am, again at 7am and once again at 7:30am I couldnt take it anymore

Like I said in another thread this - FOR ME - has mitigated the issue but not solved it!

keep the setup in home app and plus with I recommend option, my homepodmini this morning has been update to the latest 26.6 beta5 version, after test one day, it's okay for me.

Ok will do..hopefully after the next update it will fix this and we can remove those settings..so far after 1 day it hasnt done it but will see what happens..this has happened before where I went two days without it turning on and it did so Im keeping my fingers crossed hoping for the best

So far for me its been 1 day and it has NOT done it but even before it would go two days without the music turning on so its weird how it works..if I see even til tomorrow its still not doing it I will say its been resolved but Im hoping that the next firmware update solves it. Apple I think knows about it they are the ones that suggested that "fix" even though you can find the same fix online so they know, question is will the next firmware fix it

Yes, I know that experience, I'm update my homepod mini with the latest 26.6 beta 5 version, two days ago, it seems stable, hope this bugs will fixed when 26.6 final version release

I’d love to hope for the best, but if the touchpad itself is failing (even if it’s by the previous update), surely that’s a hardware problem that cannot possibly be fixed by a software update?

Well so far what I did above seems to be working..I didnt do the additional step that you recommended I wanted to see first if just doing the touch accommodations did the trick so far so good..Im just hoping the next update fixes it so I can go ahead and remove that and go back to the way it was, never had an issue with the homepod, ever, for any reason, so this issue is just really strange
With the beta update you installed, do you still have the airplay and touch accomondations workaround checked off or did you put everything back to the way it was and the beta update fixes it?

So far, I still keep disable airplay feature on my iPhone and iPad, seems Apple has changed some fundamental data for release apple challenge at IOS 27

For me its been three days and the original fix I did above seems to be working, no ghosting so far and the homepod works just fine..so Im thinking its some kind of firmware fix that will hopefully fix this mess since Ive never had a problem with my homepod before, 3 yrs, zero issues, til now

Mine seems to have fixed itself; I haven't done anything with the system other than update them every time a new release is out, and I've yet to have them randomly disconnect or randomly play something. This is with both my new Mac and my old iPhone. Perhaps the latest updates fixed something? I wish Apple would document the changes somewhere so we could keep track of this stuff.

This is a hardware issue and the only solution is to perform surgery on your HomePod. I followed this tutorial here and it fixed the issue. Unfortunately, you have to disconnect the touch surface and you lose access to its touch controls, but I almost never used them.
