Hmm...MR seems to be biased on this Honda vs. Nissan business.:p

You guys all like the Honda more than anywhere else I have read.

I wonder if it has something to do with the sales model. I was commenting about this with someone else the other day, as to why I just bought my fourth Honda over a Toyota.

Honda's product line is much like Apple's. Once you've decided on a particular type of product, you really only have a few choices and options from there. The process is quite similar to picking out your Mac. Want a Civic? What flavor? 2 door or 4 door? LX, EX, Hybrid? Nav or not? Any other accessories are straight add ons. Each choice point (except for color) only has 2 or three options.

I've comparison shopped Toyotas for the last two cars (Odyssey and Civic Hybrid vs. Sienna and Prius) and was put off by the relatively large number of mutually exclusive option packages, which meant that, for example, you can't get both a sunroof and heated seats, and you can't get a sunroof without 5 other features you may not want. The cars are more customizable, but the choices seemed harder to make.

Dunno how Nissan does it.

I had a 06 ex Honda civic, and it was not great at all after owning 54 cars in the last 8 years I am not sure if i would buy another, also the Lancer GTs is much better made, I now have a benz and am very happy! this all in the last year :)

how 'bout a camry v6? iirc it's got 260hp and car and driver managed to hit 0-60 under 6s w/ a 6-sp auto!

if i were in the market for a family sedan, i'd probably get a legacy gt spec b or a mazdaspeed 6. both are extremely fun to drive and are less common on the road.

Yeah the new Camry is so much nicer exterior wise than the upcoming 2008 Accord. The new Camry's are selling like hot cakes. They are everywhere. And Camry's are traditionally cheaper than Accords. The 2008 Accord, well looks like an Accord. Of course it will sell very well being an Accord, but not as well as the Camry. Camry is the best selling car in America last 9 out of 10 years.

My only problem with the Camry is that everyone has one! I can't believe Honda didn't come out with a better redesign for the new Accord. I guess Honda is complacent with 2nd place.

I think Toyota has better quality at the same price point. They look better too. The last go around on the Accords was a step backwards in my eye.

Hmmm. That's like that old ad for Tampax... "We're not #1 but we're right up there!" :D

I'm surprised people seem to know so much about the interior of the 2008 Accords. They've only been on sale for 2 days! The dealerships around here haven't even gotten their first shipments in yet, and the Accords are assembled less than 2 hours away. Car shows, I suppose.

The Accord moved up to a full-size this year by only a tiny margin. By definition, mid-size cars have 110-119 cu. ft. of interior volume. The new sedan squeaks by with 120 cu. ft., just barely making the full-size designation. The Accord coupe is technically a compact at 105 cu. ft.

I love my '06 Civic Si, and the wife's considering an '08 Accord coupe among several other cars. I've lapped an Acura TSX around the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, which has a slightly different version of the I4 190hp engine that'll be in the Accords, and it's quite nice. I'll be interested to actually drive one once they're available. The coupes don't hit the road till the 20th. Over the years I've noticed that USA Today's James Healey seems to directly mirror my own opinions on cars, and he loved the new Accords.

Thanks for the link. I love this quote, "Who'll buy? Biggest group is the relative geezers — 45 to dead — who favor practicality and reliability."

We just got back from test driving both.

One word for the interior of the 2008 Accord. UGLY!

UGLY UGLY UGLY!

It was just terrible!:D

The 2008 Altima was amazing though. But it still could be any of 'em because it is not my choice.

EDIT: 1000 posts! Yippi!

I had my 1993 Altima for eight years and 140,000 miles. Most reliable car I ever had. Got rid of it because we needed a pickup.
My family has had lots of Hondas, Toyotas, and Nissans and they have all been very reliable. I wouldn't hesitate to buy either of your choices.

But I really like the look of the new Altima.

And TL also asked about the CVT... it's an amazing piece of technology. As I'm sure you could feel in the test drive, you don't feel the shifts at all and it's straight power to the wheels. If you ever need to manually control it, the slapstick is there and it's great. I drive this car like a madman and it flies. I was driving down the highway yesterday and I was keeping up with some crotch rockets weaving inbetween traffic. I'm sure they could have jumped on it more if they wanted to, but i think 110-115 is fast enough. And to all of you grandpas driving your accords, the altima isn't for you, sorry. I think the power just might give you all a heart attack and make your toupes come off. So let the kids have what they want and you guys can stick to driving 45 on the highway. :D

Yup! I think my parents have finally decided on an Altima! Just no sun roof or Aluminum kick plates:(

That does look sweet. I'll probably pick up a used one in another year. I'd get the new Maxima if they didn't beat it with the ugly stick.

I've had personal experiences with several different Nissans over the years and currently own a 1999 Altima GXE (which is a totally, totally different car from the '08 Altima).

I've looked at both the '08 Accord and the current Altima, and I think they are pretty evenly matched.

I would peg them roughly even in terms of reliability. The VQ35 engine in the Altima is the best of the lot, but fuel economy is not so good (the V6 in the Accord is similar in that last regard). Historically, interiors have been better in the Hondas but Nissan has improved a great deal in that area in the last 5 years or so.

I think it's more down to which one looks better in your eyes - you won't be disappointed in either.

Nissan should make the next Maxima RWD - I'm tired of Japanese FWD "sport" or luxury sedans.

Not to go too off topic, but are the Altima's not available with Sirius anymore? My dad's been considering one for awhile, and a few months ago, we built one online and Sirius was an option, but I just did it again, and it's XM only, unless Sirius is hidden somewhere deep within one of the packages. That could be a deciding factor for him, I know it sounds dumb to choose a car based off the sat rad provider, but we've always had Sirius and everyone in the family is a huge Stern fan, so yeah, it matters. Did Nissan recently sign some sort of contract with XM?

I don't know if I'd agree with that. Your GXE is the bottom trim level, no?

Nope, that would be the XE. I don't see the Nissans trailing Honda in terms of interior materials, certainly not like they did 10 years ago. I also wonder why the Accord is such a no-brainer from most people without considering the excellent Subaru Legacy 2.5GT, similarly equipped to an Accord V6 but with AWD.

I don't think the Accord is a bad buy, but I think the Altima and Legacy are very good alternatives that get ignored by the "just get a Honda" crowd.

I also think the new Accord's styling makes it look like a Hyundai...just a subjective opinion though.

Up until the newest revision of the Altimas, I was very disappointed with them. That being said, the new Altima (and coupe) is a nice car. And as a bonus, Nissan still has one of the best p.o.v. nav systems on the market.

As a warning, the CVT does give off a little bit more engine noise than other cars in the category (due to engine revs being kept at optimal levels), but it isn't noticeable after a few days.

Then again, I am an employee of Nissan :D

Just my two cents.
