The wireless dongles that I've seen advertised only work with certain cars.
Even as more and more cars offer this most people won't buy a new car just to do wireless CarPlay. I suspect this is a very dangerous area for Apple in going completely portless. Maybe the next version of MagSafe will include a connection to do CarPlay via a USB-A connection.
Maybe keep a second iPhone to do most CarPlay functions and use the Bluetooth to do phone calls - who knows.

My MINI, which uses the same platform as BMW, has been pretty flawless for me using wireless CarPlay. In fact I’ve had a couple of hire cars for work over the past month and have been surprised that they didn’t have wireless. It doesn’t charge wirelessly but doesn’t use much power, I’ve found.

I have wired CarPlay and a wireless charger in my car (NOT wireless CarPlay). I've used the wireless charger a couple times when I first got the car just to see if it worked, but it's a novelty. Much faster and more reliable to charge with a cable.

I'm perfectly fine plugging the connector that's already sitting right by my console. Plus the added benefit of the battery being charged rather than being used up even faster!

I have wireless CarPlay in my 2019 BMW X1. It's very buggy, and sometimes doesn't work at all. About 25% of time I have to re-engage CarPlay via BMW in car menus to get it to work. Other times, it takes up to 5 minutes to start.

When I'm in my car I have it plugged in to power all the time anyway. I would rather have a bug free tethered experience over what I have today.

I'm a big fan of CarPlay, just not the wireless application.
And this is what car manufacturers found as well. Experience is not reliable, and requires additional hardware. They noped right out of it when they saw how dead simple wired CarPlay was.

That’s unfortunate. Wireless carplay is rock solid in my kenwood head unit, whereas USB ( I might use it for long distance, or if I just want to charge the phone) can glitch, although that is probably a cable issue. If wireless carplay is an option for a car, I would always choose it. It isn’t as though you can’t plug the phone in if the battery is low.

The reason wireless carplay has been slow to roll out is is has been difficult for car companies wanting to monetise entertainment systems as an up sell. For a while it was about navigation systems. What is interesting is that if you choose wireless you don’t get Hyundai’s built in navigation. Like Hyundai recognises heavy carplay users will never use it. The car companies might be giving up trying to compete on entertainment unit services like navigation.

Yea right. Look how long it took them to get Wired car play in the Outback.

I’m currently driving a 2012 Rav-4. Back when I bought it new, I think I still had the 30-pin connector on my phone. I’m not familiar with how often Subaru adopts tech, I just want it to be there this time next year when I’m ready to buy.:D

I had paid £80,000 ($100k) for my car and it still need to be pluged in to start apple car play. if they ditch the ports i will be gutted.

No issues with wireless CarPlay in my BMW as well, had it over two years now. Works perfectly.

"In addition to Honda and Hyundai, wireless CarPlay is available in select vehicles sold by Ford, GM, Chrysler, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz"

Audi has wireless CarPlay on almost all their models too. Starting with the 2021 model year, the only ones that won't have it are the TT and R8, because they're both being retired.

Nope, it isn't "false" it is exactly WHY Wireless CarPlay has not existed outside BMW and Mini for years after its introduction. It costs more to implement, and the user experience is headache that manufacturers don't want to deal with.

It has potential to improve.
As someone with a 3rd party wireless CarPlay unit it's been flawless for me. Actually it works better than my 2020 Lexus RX which has hardwired CarPlay.

Take this from someone who has both. You're just blowing smoke.

I had it in a Jeep I rented and it drained the battery in my phone really quickly. If I have to plug in to charge, might as well use wired CarPlay.

Nah, I'm more interested in hundreds of other people who report wireless CarPlay being flakey and the experience of the entire auto industry than the odd person for whom it actually works the way its supposed to.

Nothing wrong with wireless carplay. It just works.
and I have tip: if your iPhone is low on battery, or you are travelling along distance (say an hour), You. Can. Plug. it. In!
And just use USB wired carplay in your wireless unit. Bloody hell some people can be such curmudgeons!

If you have wireless carplay, you can always do wired carplay if you want. You can’t do it the other way around without also buying an accessory like carplay2air.
So if you don’t think it worthwhile, well bully for you. You don’t have to use it. Just plug your iphone in instead. It’s your car after all! But even if you don’t use it yourself, wireless carplay will be a selling point when you eventually want to sell/trade your car in.

With regard to the Santa Fe, it would seem it is the lower spec, 8 inch screen that gets the wireless carplay. It isn’t ready yet for the 10.3 inch screen in top end models. Figure that one out.

I’ll stick with the beautiful 7909. It is still the best you can buy. We have gone backwards in so many technologies.

Hope it comes to future Honda motorcycles too, ASAP.

I own a 2020 Africa Twin with CarPlay display, but the need for wire connection is ridiculously cumbersome. You need to mount your phone every time, you stop and take a quick photo - CarPlay connection is broken and it takes time to start it again, there are problems with lightning connector and moisture, etc etc etc.

Ideal future scenario in my mind: wireless CarPlay with Apple Car Key. Leave the phone in pocket for short rides. And a optional waterproof wireless charging cradle for longer rides - but no cable to attach!

Kind of like how stability control was standard on all 2008 Ford Escapes, except for the hybrid trim level. It literally took Ford an extra year to figure out how to make stability control work on a hybrid.
