Dang it!!! Just purchased a new civic last month. Hope we can upgrade via software.

I would be surprised if you can get CarPlay and Android Auto through a software update. It's more likely that the only way you'll get it is either aftermarket or your next new vehicle purchase. Looks like waiting 2-4 more months would've been worth it. I said in a previous post that if you want to be sure about getting CarPlay, wait until you can drive off the dealer's lot with CarPlay already installed from the factory.

How hackable is the car, though? I'm thinking that apart from Tesla, I'm going to stick with cars which are made pre-2010 or so to avoid the possibility of being hacked. I don't trust anyone but Tesla to actually take security of the electronic parts seriously.

pre-2010 cars could be remotely be immobilised etc. if you buy in the right budget category, the car will not be equipped with any "features" that can be backed.

Honda has always been mediocre cars. Ask millions with their 5 speed autos that destruct how they were treated? Or those with VCM issues in the V6's. Honda has never been anything special.

They are one of the better car brands....

I have to find out if my 2015 Honda Fit EX--bought back in April 2015 after my 2012 Fit was totaled when a driver from Italy got confused by the traffic signals and drove into the intersection while I was making a legal left turn--qualifies for an Apple CarPlay update. If it does, my iPhone 6 suddenly becomes REALLY useful. :D

So pretty much any low tech vehicle. I had my share of vehicles from domestic brands with 4 bangers and sticks during the 80s that also were reliable and lasted well over 100k. But I did good maintenance on them.

Hondas were and are nothing special.

100,000? Is that what passes as a "good car" by domestic standards?
I'm at 255,000 on my 94 Accord, and I still get almost 30 mpg -- and the car's official efficiency rating was only 28 on the highway brand new.

And my parents Cherokee went 400,000 miles in the 15 years they owned it..

Snark is really unbecoming

This is the worst. Part of why I got the 2015 Civic was because I was told it would be Carplay compatible with a future update.

You are another victim of the seeming bait & switch tactics used by Honda.

Honda announced CarPlay participation in 2014, allowed Apple to use images of their vehicle on the CarPlay home page, did a well known paid public beta, and dealer personnel as well as corporate personnel alluded to and supported the idea that existing vehicles with the new Display Audio unit would eventually get a firmware upgrade.

Folks bought cars based on the bait of those assurances, and only in the last few weeks has Honda switched their statements to "no backward upgrades" and "select 2016 vehicles only".

I think Honda needs to see a class action lawsuit, from owners of 2014/15/16 vehicles with Display Audio but w/o CarPlay, to remind them of their former orientation toward the surprise & delight that breeds customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Honda tweeted 2 weeks ago they were going to pee pee on customers that bought vehicles capable of running CarPlay by not releasing backward compatible firmware updates.

It doesn't even make sense that they would do this to make people trade in their car for a newer model. These are cars not smartphones. 99.9% of people aren't going to sell their 2015 model to get a 2016 model with CarPlay. In fact most Honda drivers I know usually keep their car forever. After all that's the main reason you get a Honda.

Nothing is hackproof. All but the new iPod touch can be jailbroken so is that really any different?

Yes, it's extremely different.

#1 - The cars are so vulnerable that hackers can hack them without ever having physical access to it. Further, it's not a user's action that leads to the vulnerability, and there is no way for the owner to protect themselves from the vulnerability. Jail breaking a device involves somebody having physical access to the device, and Apple releases software updates which fix the vulnerabilities from time to time. Apart from Tesla, car manufacturers don't regularly release software updates, and when they do, they're neither free nor OTA - you have to take your car to the dealer and pay $100+ most often.

#2 - If my iPod Touch is hacked, I am slightly inconvenienced and out somewhere between $200 and $500, if I can't recover it. If my car is hacked, I may find myself in a disabled vehicle surrounded by cars going 80 MPH on the highway. This could easily lead to body injury, or even death, and the possibility that my car, which I rely on for numerous vital things (IE, getting to work, buying groceries, etc) needs to be replaced which will cost me several thousand dollars.

Sorry, Honda tweeted 2 weeks ago #carplay that CarPlay backward compatibility would not be offered (even though customer vehicles in the beta test program ran it with a firmware upgrade via usb stick.)

Ask them, but until a solid class action suit, or FTC investigation, gets rolling, Honda appears ready to pee pee on all customers that were misled by Honda/Apple advertising, dealer and factory rep encouragement.

I have the high-end 2013 Civic shown on Apple's website too, but with Honda's proprietary GPS system.

I suppose I will go the aftermarket route with a Kenwood or Pioneer system.
Joe, I didn't think 2014 Display Audio units were already capable of supporting CarPlay. Does your unit have the dual USB HDMI port set up? Does it run Honda Link Next Gen (or just original Honda Link)?

I feel sorry for those that bought a new car recently and don't get an update, but seriously guys... This shouldn't be a surprise by now! Car manufacturers are absolutely terrible with post-sale software. You should FULLY EXPECT to never get any new software features--and I mean ZERO--after you leave the dealer lot.

The only exception right now would be if you buy an $80,000+ Tesla. They are literally the only manufacturer that can be relied on for post-sale updates. With every other manufacturer: CAVEAT EMPTOR!

Why does Honda make them so ugly?

Good deal, though. Solid cars.

Yeah the current Accord is a handsome vehicle. This one looks like its trying too hard with those endless LEDs and Acura beak.

As for CarPlay, a $15 dashmount works almost as well (plus it gives you full phone capability instead of some subset)

My biggest question is, how does it perform as a CAR? And secondarily, does it look nice or is it fugly?

so this is huge..... not huge for me to switch....

Its only a a convenient all-in-one solution with your mobile as the control.

Its like Star Treck all over again..

Got my 2005 Prius that shoes no sign if failing. Love the car but it has no way of hooking up an iPod or anything else. Oh well, maybe it'll need replacing by 2025, or maybe 2035. You know, I'm starting to think this might be my last car. So much for me getting CarPlay :D

This is right. I have never, ever seen a car company add software features to an existing model. They might patch glitches, but not add an all new feature. I'm pretty sure they see it as nothing but a bunch of risk with little gain (and a detriment to lease sales which rely on customers to upgrade frequently). Tesla is the only company shaking this up.

I'm picking up my new 2015 Accord Sport today. It was too good of a lease deal to pass up.

I was also under the impression that CarPlay was either already integrated or would be soon with a software upgrade. Sort of a bummer that it isn't. Although, looking at the CarPlay available apps (which I'm sure will eventually grow), it's probably not a big deal. With your iPhone plugged in, you can enable "Hey Siri" for most things like directions, music and calls. Only thing that sucks is the iPhone display won't be mirrored on the nice 7" screen in the dash. I will probably use my Kenu vent-clip or a new dashboard mount instead. I haven't used the Bluetooth streaming yet but I'm guessing that skip forward, skip backward, volume and such on the phone will work with the steering wheel controls and the song info (but not the album artwork) will show up on the dash screen as well.
