Nicely done, Honda. I'll be glad when Subaru catches up. While the current Infotainment system in my '15 Outback is acceptable, it's nowhere near what it could be if it had Carplay. And what the heck, Subaru? No Carplay or Android Auto in your '16's? Sigghhh. They'll figure it out.

Honda lost its soul as soon as they put CVT's in there cars

Honda came in to the US market in the 1970's as an alternative to the gas-hungry American cars, using fuel economy as a selling point and a smooth ride. CVT is meant to increase fuel economy and provide a smooth acceleration experience. How have they lost their soul?

How hackable is the car, though? I'm thinking that apart from Tesla, I'm going to stick with cars which are made pre-2010 or so to avoid the possibility of being hacked. I don't trust anyone but Tesla to actually take security of the electronic parts seriously.
Why trust Tesla?

Oh yeah, they're the "Cool Car Company" cause they have Elon to worship...

You are literally more likely to be attacked by a shark riding a unicorn while sitting in your back yard than you are likely to have your Honda Accord hacked.

Really bummed that this is only being rolled out to the 2016 Accords...

So pretty much any low tech vehicle. I had my share of vehicles from domestic brands with 4 bangers and sticks during the 80s that also were reliable and lasted well over 100k. But I did good maintenance on them.

Hondas were and are nothing special.

100K miles is pathetic. Unfortunately, based on my many years' experience w/ domestic cars, that's about the extent of their reliability.

Honda has always been mediocre cars. Ask millions with their 5 speed autos that destruct how they were treated? Or those with VCM issues in the V6's. Honda has never been anything special.

the public must be fools to buy Hondas in droves year after year, and those magazines that rate them top ten mid-size sedan year after year...

FYI, Hondas have very high resale values, in part because they can be expected to go 225K to 250K miles, or more. The high residual makes them extremely attractive to lease. Or if you buy one outright, even at 100K it'll be worth a tidy sum when many domestic cars are ready to be put out to pasture...

Regardless, after the way GM used bankruptcy to dodge responsibility for their known ignition defects, it's not like I'd ever buy any vehicle from them anyway...

Not sure why you quoted me (my comment was sarcastic). But I agree with your statement. My 08 Accord is reaching 180K miles and aside from piston ring defect/recall, it's been pretty smooth sailing since I bought it.

Most of the public are cheap *******s so I wouldn't read anything into that. By the way, EVERY car is "top-rated" or "highest awarded" or "best selling" in something. Seriously the spin that car companies put into PR and marketing would make Apple blush in modesty.

5 speed autos from the early 2000's would fall apart (Accord and Odyssey minivan were chief victims). VCM from 2008-2012 was junk, as it sapped performance and didn't deliver much on fuel economy.

Reliable Honda = 4-cylinder plus a manual transmission :) + a driver who pays attention to maintenance.

that's me, 2003 Honda civic lx manual. now @ 185k, everything still original except brake pads, tires, timing belt, coolant, oils

Because they've had software engineers at the company since before they made their first car. Because they regularly release software updates over the air. Because they talk about how secure their software is. Because they invite hackers to try and hack it.

No other car company does any of that. They've all strapped on random "smart" features in the least intelligent ways, with no regard for security at all.

Hondas are great for the resale value. You can't even find used 2014 Civics for sale in my area for under $17,000, which is only $1,000 less than the price I paid for mine new. The BlueBook value for my now used 2015 is the same price I paid for it new. I don't necessarily regret my purchase, but I've been feeling cramped in the driver seat, so that and Carplay might convince me to upgrade to the 2016 Accord without taking much (if any) of a hit on depreciation given that I drive ~10,000 miles every year.

And my state would only require that I pay the tax on the difference in vehicle values too... yeah, that accord is looking tasty.

I'm excited for this! I'm car shopping for 2016 and hoped to get a CarPlay-capable car. My 2004 Accord V6 has 165k and is doing well. But at ten years old, I'm ready for a new car. (And while adding a Crutchfield iPod adapter was a great DIY upgrade, I want something better)

Being a creature of habit, is Honda is appealing rather than trying something different. But it looked like Honda wasn't getting CarPlay anytime soon. Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, VW Passat were looking to be likely purchases for me.

But I was planning to wait until this Fall to seriously shop, anyway. So the 2016 Accord is perfect timing and an unexpected surprise.

It also throws my wife's plan to get a new Corolla. Toyota isn't offering CarPlay anytime soon. So she'll wait now to see the Honda before buying her default car :)

Sorry, Honda tweeted 2 weeks ago #carplay that CarPlay backward compatibility would not be offered (even though customer vehicles in the beta test program ran it with a firmware upgrade via usb stick.)

It could be that on my 2015 Honda Fit, the touchscreen system's electronics were not designed to specifically run CarPlay. Now, Honda could offer a dealer-installed kit that replaces the currently-installed electronics for my Fit EX's touchscreen with a new box that does run CarPlay--especially since my car stereo does support both USB and Bluetooth connections to my iPhone 6.

I probably should have put an emoji to indicate a bit of humor and sarcasm. I do credit Tesla for what they've done, it's just that like Apple, they've gotten a lot of extra credit simply because they've mastered the art of hype.

The majority of mainstream automakers are simply snoozing and not taking connectivity as seriously as they could. Instead of very actively pursuing tech, they're simply letting the existing automotive tech companies give them a sales pitch and going with whatever's available.

Yet that said, the exception is high lines like MBZ with it's COMMAND system... dating back to the late 1990's is most certainly an active, ongoing, seriously advanced telemetry effort.

Also MBZ has done a tremendous amount of security work, they just haven't bragged about it like Tesla, as it's not in the German's DNA. Any question about that... simply check out Mercedes F-1 Racing Program, the millions upon millions of dollars they've invested in telemetry over decades makes Tesla's effort look like an apprenticeship at best.

Damn, Just leased a new civic, my first Honda but the high residual value was appealing, I just use an old nano for music and keep it in the glove box, Android Auto would be cool tho then I can finally use my new G4 as a media player as well as a GPS :p:D

Worrying about being hacked is irrational. You're so likely to be seriously injured in a car accident, the risk of being hacked is negligible by comparison.
Yes but remember, being hacked or someone else being hacked may also cause you to be seriously injured. Let’s say hacker slams your brakes on max and you just so happen to be doing 80 on the freeway?

Yes but that risk is insignificant compared to the risk you take driving a car in the first place
