Honda on Wednesday at YouTube Space LA introduced the redesigned 2016 Civic with CarPlay and Android Auto support. The tenth-generation sedan will be the second Honda vehicle to support CarPlay alongside the 2016 Accord as the Japanese car maker continues its 2016 vehicle rollout.

Apple has listed Honda as a CarPlay partner on its website for quite some time, but the car maker waited until its 2016 lineup to introduce the iPhone-based dashboard system. GM is also supporting CarPlay and Android Auto in 2016 across its Chevrolet, Cadillac, Corvette, Buick and GMC vehicle brands.

CarPlay connects to iPhone and provides hands-free or eyes-free access to Maps, Phone, Messages, Music, Podcasts and third-party apps such as Spotify, Rdio, iHeartRadio, CBS Radio and MLB At Bat. The in-dash software uses Siri and also interfaces with your vehicle's knobs, dials and buttons.

I think it is a great system considering how light the workload is on the side of the car , however I love that iOS has matured enough to optimize itself when it detects your car's Bluetooth signal.

Having it offer up Maps, and give me details on routes without my input is awesome. I would love Car Play, but don't feel like I am missing much.

I think Carplay would be good. I use siri to make phone calls and get directions almost everyday in the car and anything that creates less fumbling around with my phone would be great. Not sure if I would rely on apple maps though lol, I still think Waze is the best daily driver.

2016? It's still 2015!
They are actually late. Many manufacturers have been selling 2016 model cars for over a month now. In fact, Many cars built as early as July 2015 (depending on manufacturer) are actually 2016 cars here in the US. It is partly due to marketing, as well as safety / emission standards that depict a model year here in the States.

Additionally, the term model year has a different significance here in the States (as well as Canada) as compared to Europe, and the rest of the world.

Yup, Europe is different, 2015 models are 2015 models, not 2016.

I have a '13 Civic SI and I'm already feeling tech envy. It has bluetooth, but no GPS. And it still requires a key turn to start it. Not sure I can stand driving such an ancient machine much longer.

Key Ignition is an added security feature given the number of thefts of cars with keyless entry and ignition in recent times.
Value it. Sadly it is a featire that seems to be rapidly going out of fashion.

And this is likely just the beginning. I have this suspicion that Apple will take the same strategy they took with the phone. First they place carplay in the cars (remember itunes on the Motorola Rokr). With the experience of this, I could then see them growing to run more of the cars internals and eventually lead to a self driving car. This is opposed tot he Google approach that is going all out from day one. I think it will take Apple longer to get there, but given the learnings along the way would expect a more polished product in the end.

All this is to say that I agree that no one will buy a car based on carplay today. In a year or two, not having this option will be limiting for a car. A few years afterwards, it will adjust car performance based on weather, traffic, and other parameters. And then finally, you will just say "Siri, take me to work please."

Just got a new 2016 Honda Pilot - hope it shows up in that too soon!

Forget it. Honda seems intent to screw its loyal customers who believed Honda corporate and dealer reps when they implied or said that vehicles sold with the new Display Sudio system, but not CarPlay would be retrofitted via a firmware upgrade (even mentioning how the Beta Test fleet accomplished this on production DA units via a FW upgrade delivered via USB.)

Now Honda appears to be flipping the bird to all those customers who bought, or waited, expecting Honda to make good on their statements.

Shame on Honda for its bad faith bait and switch here.

I'm hoping there will be a class action lawsuit.
