Now the bad news. I wonder if it supports wireless carplay. I was all excited when I got my 2016 Golf R a month ago because of it's Carplay support. Unfortunately it only has 1 USB input, so I can't have both my 160GB iPod and my iPhone connected at the same time, which means I can only access one or the other at a given time.

Enter wireless Carplay. Eagerly awaiting the final iOS9 release to test it out on VW's all new media platform and see if wireless support was an option. Unfortunately, it's not. So my 2016 model went from being technologically advanced to behind the times in a little over a month.

This cat and mouse game will likely continue for a while.

You're one of those annoying old people that never want technology to advance based on your own beliefs. Go away.
Lol, did you not read the part where I said I'd get the Apple Car when it can do the driving for me? Besides, I was poking fun at myself and my old car. Sheesh, you young whippersnappers are so cranky!

I just want the technology to be really advanced when I trade in my beloved car which was, in its day, touted as a "different kind of car, from a different kind of company". Which I guess it was, given that it's given me over two decades of trouble free service and I still see others like it from the same era on the road quite often.

I don't have the inclination nor the money to try the interim phases of tech on new cars every other year when my old car works great and the really futuristic model I'd really like to have is on the horizon and may appear by the time my old car is ready to give up the road.

Jeez, has no one got a sense of humour round here any more..

This Is a forum to debate Apple stuff, which is what I do, I don't slag anyone off, I don't tell Lies, I try not to be rude. Is there some underlying agenda that unless you have an apple tattoo a cross your chest you are not welcome.. If you don't see both sides of the coin it would be a very dull place...
I have a pretty good sense humor, but neither of those comments were funny. To me that is. Do you see the irony in proclaiming this forum open to debate while kinda complaining about my response to your quotes? Responses to our comments aren't always going to be what we like. It's okay. Don't take it personally. Besides, I'm just some dude on the internet.

You say the comments were meant to be humorous. I saw them as trollish in a nature. Apple Maps bad, Honda Nav bad. Together they're badder. <-- see I do have a sense of humor.:) "Teh poors" get Android and Kia. The landed gentry get iOS and BMW. That's just pure flame. Apple tattoo? My posting history would suggest otherwise. My comment wasn't in defense of Apple. It was just about what seemed to be trolling.

Well, wear your luddite tendencies with pride, I guess. But you say you can't deal with keyless entry/starting but will deal well with a self driving car?? Hmmm....
I'm not a Luddite in most aspects of technology, just my old car and only because that car and I have history together. Anyway, I was poking fun at myself. I wasn't going to drive the sister-in-law's car on the spot like that when she just got it and I couldn't even find the ignition. Goodness knows what else would have befuddled me once we got out on the road... like the fact the car seems to turn itself completely off at red lights! Anyway it was generous of her to offer to let me drive her brand new car but I wasn't going to abuse her generosity by taking her up on it when I've been driving a dinosaur almost exclusively for over 20 years.

And yes, if the car is truly self driving, one would hope even a Luddite would be able to get it going and on its way.

+1. Drive it 'til the wheels fall off.

Yeah, that's my worry about these new systems, they're so integrated into the car as a whole that the entire car, not just the system becomes obsolete all too quickly. If everything could be modular so that just a portion of the console could be upgraded as needed, that would be cool. I'd love to get new displays as they became available for navigation, for example.

I have a fairly simple rule for my car replacement.

if the cost of maintenance per year exceeds the finance I would pay per year, Time to trade in and get something new.

My first car lasted me 3 years. what a piece of ****.
My Second car lasted me 7 years.
This car has lasted me almost 4 years... thoug. i'm just bored of it. judging by the fact that all i spend is 2 oil changes a year, new windshield wipers, chances are this car will last me another 20 years.
Absolutely. My first new car was purchased in 2006. 9.5 years and 237k miles later, I'm shopping for my 2nd new car. I spent less in 9.5 years on repairs than I did for any of my used cars. And I couldn't keep any of them half as long.

The Apple car:

$99 test drive delivered to your door.
One car per store placed in window balancing on one wheel as a marketing exercise only; you cannot sit in car at store.
Custom interior for additional cost.
Aluminium and carbon fibre body.
Available in 6-8 colours.
Battery power only.
Some autonomy, but not fully self-driving.
iOS operating system.
Built-in wireless charging for your iPhone.
Basic car controls have dedicated hardware knobs and buttons.
Thanks for a licensing deal between Apple and Tesla, Apple car owners recharge for free at Tesla charging stations.
Software updates are mandatory automatic background pushed.
First Apple car is branded  One

Don't forget the Apple Car Edition, with sapphire glass windshield/windows and solid 24k gold body panels. For one billion dollars.

Unfortunately, the closest we'll get to modular systems will come from the aftermarket. There's are good reasons for that. Lets take your Saturn. It's 20 yrs old. For modular components to fit it, the components would have to be made in a similar style, a standard block to be used for multiple years, or require some kind of kit. Nice idea, but car companies wouldn't benefit from it. Their goal is to sell cars, not accessories. Anything they can do to encourage a $20K-30K-40K or more purchase is what they are going to do. Modular components only encourage people to hold on to their cars longer.

Unrelated: Congrats on holding on to that car for 20 years. I usually hold mine for 200-250K miles before getting another one 3 years behind the current model year. Depreciation is for other people.:)

Maybe i need to work harder on my sense of humour and the way I try and portray irony.. Definitely.no offense intended. A big group hug is what's needed. mwah!!!

It makes me sad to know that they really would just call it Apple Car. It feels like the era of imaginative, interesting names at Apple is long dead, and all they bother doing now is throwing the weight of their brand around. Apple Watch. Apple Pencil. Apple TV. I get that turning themselves into a no-name brand makes their products feel ubiquitous, but I keep thinking of that prop you see in various places throughout Portal: a tin can with a pure white label, adorned only with the word BEANS. Maybe yearning for the days when their products were named by human beings just makes me an old fuddy-duddy, I dunno. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I mean, I could see "Gala" looking good on the butt-end of a hot little car…

(On a side note, Chevrolet and Corvette? Well dang! :p)

i have said this before and will do so again.

if you are looking for CarPlay (rest assured it's not a gimmick, it's really good. can always be improved) *and* are not looking to / cannot afford to change cars, Pioneer NEX is the best way to go. Not Alpine/Blaupunkt.

Connectivity, interface, customization options, navigation quality, CarPlay, finish, aesthetics: Pioneer has done a rock solid job on their AVIC NEX series.

Only pray your old car has a standard double DIN (considering how the cars in the recent years have had unique dashboard designs).

Waiting to talk to Pioneer directly to ask when they are out with their wireless CarPlay firmware update.

I need a new car and will likely be purchasing the new Civic. CarPlay is one of the main reasons. I use my phone for music and gps too much while driving that this is just a natural feature for me to look out for.

It's a shame that the Acura ILX or Lexus IS do not support CarPlay yet. It would have been nice for me to have a bit of choice if I wanted to go for a premium brand.

Something about this announcement Broadcom made 2 days ago about it's newest bluetooth chip makes me think my brand new Carplay integrated VW is more than a firmware upgrade away from being able to utilize wireless carplay. Especially the part about a dedicated Bluetooth antenna that allows for concurrent operation of Bluetooth and WLAN apps and advanced coexistence algorithms...

via: Broadcom Announcement

Key Features

  • BCM89359 5G WiFi/Bluetooth Smart 2X2 MIMO Combo Chip with RSDB Support
    • Optimized for seamless interaction with enhanced wireless applications and feature-rich systems like Apple CarPlay and Google Auto Link, the BCM89359 device is the first WLAN combo architected specifically for multi-band concurrent automotive infotainment and telematics operation.
    • RSDB support enables simultaneous connectivity to the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, improving throughput and latency when using multiple applications.
    • Integrated 5G WiFi technology provides the bandwidth required for multiple high resolution in-car displays, allowing uncongested 5GHz video to coexist concurrently with Wi-Fi Internet access and 2.4GHz Bluetooth hands-free audio.
    • 2x2 MIMO technology delivers twice the Wi-Fi performance of any other solution on the market today, providing the highest throughput in-car network possible for multiple user experiences.
    • A dedicated Bluetooth antenna enables concurrent operation of Bluetooth and WLAN applications and employs advanced coexistence algorithms to maximize voice quality and data access speed in simultaneous operation.

OK, just got off the phone with Pioneer support. It's official (at least coming from the horse's mouth; not that they can't/won't change their minds later)

the current NEX models will NOT support wireless CarPlay even with a firmware update.

It requires WiFi adapters built into the hardware and will not leverage the existing bluetooth option.

so wireless CarPlay = new hardware.

my guess is that the car maker$ won't incorporate it at least for one more cycle!

Yep - just spoke with a VW person via online chat who said there is no 'firmware upgrade', nor is there one in the works for an update to support wireless carplay for new models.

I'm back on the wrong side of automative technology. Feels good to be home.

Corvette is a model of a Chevrolet, not a brand.
I would like to see one of these Apple CarPlay units in action.
Our 2015 Prius has a poor interface.

i had it for about 2 weeks without trying it b/c i thought it was gimmicky and not worth my time. then i finally plugged in and used it, and it's seriously as good as advertised. Siri is responsive, reads texts, and takes dictation surprisingly well (when the windows are rolled up). Maps is good..I'd prefer to use my Navigon or Google Maps app for traffic purposes, but apple maps does seem to at least take into account current traffic conditions when giving estimated arrival time. It doesn't seem to be good at re-routing around traffic though.

And being able to tell Siri to play a certain album, or text someone, or call someone is pretty seamless. I'm a fan. too bad about wireless not being an option, because otherwise i'd give it double thumbs up.

Your car is a youngster. My car is a '93 model bought in '92. It has old fashioned hand cranked windows. You should hear me laugh like a maniac when the little kids I carpool ask me where the buttons for the windows are...or better yet, ask ME to roll down the window on the rear passenger side while I'm driving! They see the crank for the windows but have no concept of what it is.

On the flip side, you should have seen my confusion recently when my sister-in-law offered to let me drive her new Mini-Cooper. When I found out there's no key, let alone a place to insert one, I switched over to the passenger side pretty fast. I want no part of this new technology until Apple comes out with a car that will in fact drive me wherever while I sit back and do absolutely nothing but enjoy the scenery.
Hear, hear! We live in a throwaway culture, and everyone is always so quick to toss out the old so they can buy the new shiny! I've had a 1998 Toyota Tacoma for the past 5 years, and apart from a couple of tie rods and an alternator (and some brakes I replaced myself), it's been trucking along just fine. Which is disappointing, because it gives me no excuse to buy a new car! My dad sold me his old 2000 Celica, which lasted 6 months...but it spoiled me, because I learned to love driving a stick shift. Automatics are just plain boring now!

I've been looking at Honda Civic Si's lately, and I'm excited to see what they come up with next year for the 2016 model (and the Type-R!). I'm going to disagree with the consensus here at say that the last 2 years of Civic models are really nice-looking! Well, barring the 2015 Civic Coupe and its weird-ass plastic grill. :\

This new Civic looks...odd. It reminds me of a Ford Five-Hundred with the square front, and I don't like the similarities to the Accord. Civics have always looked like fun cars, and this one looks like a teenager who is puffing up his chest. Hopefully the new Si looks better! I had better start saving my pennies. :\
