Last we saw a couple years back the “tethered” version of AVP (in development) required a Mac Pro.

I have a feeling that people are severely underestimating how important the R1 chip is to the entire experience.
But I mean even if it’s a Mac Pro, what other port would it use besides Thunderbolt? And it would still have to be over wire, so maybe any offloading even to a Mac Pro would have latency. Or maybe it would need two cables.

Yeah I would think the R chip is always going to be necessary. But I don’t know if it can be offloaded to an external device or if it can communicate fast enough with an M chip over wire.

Matt Birchler with a rather scathing review after 5 months

"...right now, my feeling about the Vision Pro is that it was the worst way I could have possibly spent $3,500 on upgrading my computing life."

"It’s simply not comfortable to wear, and I don’t like having it on my face."

"anything more than 10 minutes leads me to have serious VR-headset-face, to the point I watched a movie on it before a family event recently and my mom asked me if I got hit in the face because the rings around my eyes looked like double black eyes."

"The battery pack is annoying"

"I dislike Mac Virtual Display"

"Spatial personas are very cool, but...the classic VR problem (“I love this! I’ll never do it again, though!”)."

"the Vision Pro makes the iPad look like a productivity powerhouse in comparison."

"Eye tracking as the only input method is too imprecise and can be frustrating"

"I still watch a movie or two each week on the headset, but it’s mostly out of obligation to use the $3,500 thing I bought."
Whilst i believe some or all of that, two things

1. he’s generating clicks as an internet reviewer for revenue
2. its an early developer focused device

AR/VR won’t be mainstream from ANY company until we get glasses form factor. And that will take time.

I personally do not have a comfort issue with the AVP.. i haven’t worn it for hours but feel like I could without issue.. i use the solo knit band too..

My main issues are the reflection/glare when the screen has a lot of black/dark scenes, and light coming in by my nose

I had comfort issues for a little while but about the first week of the 14 day return window I could tell I was starting to get used to it as I could keep it on for longer and longer without issues. Within two months I’d bought a second battery because I got tired of always having it plugged in so the battery wouldn’t run out and bought a second battery for a good deal on eBay and haven’t had any issues wearing it for several hours for months now. I’d say of your comfort issues aren’t getting better by 7 - 10 days with the device then I’d consider returning it but if you do notice it’s getting better then you may want to stick with it but it’s a tough call obviously due to the price. I’m glad I kept mine. It still blows me away at times giving me “holy crap, I can’t believe this thing is real and I own one” moments.

Exactly my thoughts. 👍
I recently discovered that "moon portal" app. It is not really something productive, but - holy moly - I am walking around on the bridge of the Enterprise and things like that. And I am not just reading about it, I can do it.

I get reflection/glare as well. I wonder if there is any fix for this.

Most of the long term reviews I've seen on YouTube or read have not been malicious. But they have been necessarily blunt about what is an extremely expensive purchase. Almost all the tech influencers who were so bullish upon the US release have been notably quite about the longer term usage. I think it's helpful to hear from people who didn't return it and if they regret that decision. There are more apps now, but is it really viable as a spatial computer, or is that money better spent on a Mac or iPad? Or waiting for v2?
Apple didnt position this device as a Mac replacement as they should've. I would say its a spacial device that can link up to an actual computer to do computing but it doesnt function as a stand alone computer.

regarding the fact, that engineering does not know in advance, what people want:

“Some people say, "Give the customers what they want." But that's not my approach. Our job is to figure out what they're going to want before they do. I think Henry Ford once said, "If I'd asked customers what they wanted, they would have told me, 'A faster horse!'" People don't know what they want until you show it to them. That's why I never rely on market research. Our task is to read things that are not yet on the page.”

If only they'd get some gaming controllers out there ...

Like the iPad got a Stylus after a few years (but not called a Stylus of course) ;)

Apple will probably release controllers after a few years (but they won't be called controllers) ;)

You cannot compare the stylus with possible controllers for the AVP. It will be a quite easy thing to create this opportunity and hardware. Did you know, that there are already two external "controllers" for the AVP? They are called keyboard and trackpad.

But I am somehow glad, Apple just started with hand gestures. I tried the Quest and its controllers and I am not really fond of them.

I picked up a 512GB unit a couple of weeks ago off eBay. I am assessing it on the second hand price I paid ($1200 less than retail) and it's really something special. I'm not sure yet how it fits into my computing life and it's still got the "new" glow to me but I can see so much promise. I think when they move the platform to a more wearable AR focus that it'll really hit the mass market. I'm a hardware and software engineer (degrees in electronics and comp sci) so I've alway been an early adopter and try to assess technology like this not in it's current state as much as what it could turn into. Not to say that I don't really enjoy working in the virtual environment and as a video consumption device it's pretty great. This isn't a "now" device. It's a device for those that want to experience a rather expensive dev project and appreciate where it's going.

In my eyes, the AVP has two main problems that drag it down:

First, outside of the specific niche of being a portable super-display for Macs, it's an ultra-high-price consumer device... so where the heck is the consumer content? Why are we getting four-minute immersive videos and not the entire Superbowl? What is Apple even doing with all those really expensive 3D cameras?

Second, the design optimized for style over comfort, and that is an absolute damn stinker of a choice because there is no wiggle room for form over function right now with headset devices. None. Whoever gave the approval on shipping either of the headbands in the box should be fired (out of a cannon, into the sun) and replaced with someone who actually knows how the ergonomics of these devices work.

I get reflection/glare as well. I wonder if there is any fix for this.
You're stuck with it. It's a side effect of how the pancake lenses work and impossible to get rid of without replacing the optics with a totally different system (and the older methods, which don't have the problem, are much bigger and heavier). There are plenty of alternatives under development, but none have gotten out of the "lab experiments" stage yet, especially since most are also trying to improve the FOV in ways that don't require ultra-wide headsets like Pimax makes.

Why are we getting four-minute immersive videos and not the entire Superbowl?

The technology isn't there yet. Compare the locker room scenes with the actual playing scenes. Locker room shots are great. Playing scenes show the current camera limitations, such as the inability to do an immersive zoom. There is the problem of creating a totally new production suite along with new hardware and software to process it. They are showing us the things they can do well. We'll have to wait for them to work out the technical details, negotiate the rights, etc.

Whoever gave the approval on shipping either of the headbands in the box

? This is actually one of their better ideas. Ship the nice looking back strap that they advertise, but include the more practical head strap as well.

The "more practical" one is still abysmal. There are Etsy sellers who have made more practical arrangements with a budget of pocket lint.

Because those 3D cameras are useless for sports events where massive telezooms are required.

Sports have to be filmed with this...

Seems like the whole "Watch sports on your AVP" use case isn't feasible for the foreseeable future then.
I’d imagine there could be multiple 3D cameras placed around the venue so you could transport to different “seats” to get more close up to some particular action. They could also probably incorporate one or more 2D screens virtually so you can simultaneously see both, maybe as a big virtual Jumbotron placed where spectators would be sitting on the opposing side of the venue.

So I was in the Apple Store yesterday picking up some HomePod Minis that I ordered. The lovely clerk was chatting with me as we were waiting for my merch to come from the back.

Her: "So, anything from our announcements yesterday you have your eye on?"

Me: "Not really. Just bought a new 15 PM last year. My wife would like a new iPad soon so when you announce those we might be interested."

Her: "Good to know. In the meantime, you can book a demo of the Vision Pro and ..."

Me: <grimaces>

Her: "... and ..."

Me: "Nope. nope. Saw someone at the store here wearing one last time I was in. Looked ridiculous."

Looking ridiculous was also the reaction of a friend of mine when I asked her what she thought of the VP. It strikes me as odd though that that would be the main consideration for this device since it’s primarily meant to be used in the privacy of home (or maybe that isn’t known?). I’ve never cared about looking silly when I’m by myself or around family. Am I unusual in that regard?
