I have been driving for 2 and 1/2 years, and i text while driving...no accidents or tickets so far

yes, it's usually 4x4 drivers like you. and when you crash because you're not paying attention you'll cause terrible damage to a normal car and occupants.

I've done it a few times while on the interstate, but I don't text that much, so it's a rarity. I think the most dangerous thing I do while driving is picking an album on my ipod. I've curbed that habit by just setting my ipod to shuffle by album and letting it pick which albums I listen too.

To try and be serious for a minute, I totally agree. I think the iPod should have an option to make the writing larger, the wheel less sensitive and a less cluttered menu for people who are less abled or visually impaired. It would also help while driving. I know you can change most of these settings manually but it's a bit of a pain, an Easy Access on/off would be simpler.

Lets just say I drive a motorcycle 90% of the time. I cant tell you how many close calls I've had with people talking on the phone/texting. I'm a heavy texter, but don't do it when I'm driving a car.

I don't like to and for the most part I avoid it but the question was have you EVER and yes I have a number of times. I've also typed into google maps, wrote emails, changed songs etc

Wow, the results of this poll are worrying!

No wonder there are so many accidents and such erratic driving out there...

Irresponsible idiots!

So you can understand the results better, I voted yes because there've been times in which I needed to answer something and did so with a text on a red traffic-light.

More people do it than folks would like to believe (I see the poll is going lopsided as I knew it would). All the people doing the name calling should be ashamed of themselves. True, its bad... but there's no call for being rude, disagree or agree. If someone wanted to create a new thread just to vent about how much they dislike people who text, they're free to do so.

Usually when I have trouble with someone doing something weird on the road, they're NOT texting, they're TALKING (on the phone). Texting/typing is no doubt terrible, but something far more disturbing, are the people that lose themselves in a conversation to the degree that they drive in a highly distracted manner.

As was in a fastfood parking lot today, browsing the web on their WiFi using my iPhone, and I looked out next to me, and the woman parked in her car threw out a paper bag on the ground... then proceeded to drive out of the parking lot directly past a trashcan with an extended face. Lots of people doing amazingly irritating and inconsiderate things. Best we understand them first, before we condemn.

there's nothing to understand. it's idiotic selfish life-theatening behaviour. it's those that do it who should be ashamed not those who find it reprehensible.

eleven morons so far.
Favorite value-added post of the day.
Twenty of you people are fricking idiots. I hope you wrap your cars around a tree.
Oh another value-added post.

I think it is excellent to see such intelligent people like the two above call others names or wish harm on them. I'm digging it.

I have text, written e-mails, and answered calls while at red lights. While driving I have merely answered calls. I avoid trees at all costs though if it matters.

I don't even like to talk on the phone when driving, and won't answer the phone if the care is in motion. I only pick up if it's mom, IF I'm at the stoplight, cuz she rarely calls me (I usually call her after work)

recently i was driving along the motorway at around 70mph and in the next lane (travelling at roughly the same speed) was a somone texting. he had his family in the car with him. so dangerous.

Whoa, 2 1/2 years.
You have a long way to go before you become a good driver. Aren't you still probationary?

Funny....well considering that a very large percentage of teenagers crash within the first 6 months of driving i thought it was worth mentioning. I wasnt bragging i was just stating a fact, judging by your less than amused responses im guessing you have had accidents or tickets of your own right?

To sananda: Are you saying that SUV drivers are better at texting while driving? If thats the case then thanks i think i do a good job at it

Texting while driving is a skill, of course your not going to do it in bumper to bumper traffic going 45mph, you pick and choose which is the best time to do it, at a light, on the freeway with minimal traffic, etc.. it is a skill that i think i have down pretty well

bernie, PLEASE be careful. at the lights is one thing, but on the freeway is a not a good idea at all. just think about how far your car travels while your eyes are off the road.

I know, i dont text like a novel while on the freeway, ill just be like "yeah c u there" or something short like that...you have to be smart if your going to text when you drive and i try to be as careful as i can

Shrug. Then I recommend none of the people who are voting "YES" to vote or post in this thread. Problem solved right? I guess that makes the problem dissappear if we admonish those doing it into shutting up. Dialogue does not denote acceptance. If someone you love does something horrible, I'm sure you think calling them idiots and morons works wonders for their behavior. Somehow, I personally doubt it very much. But that's just me. It may feel really really good to get emotional and say things that express the superiority of your position on an issue, but I'll guarantee you that you will never be very effective as communicator.

that's good to hear. you seem like a nice fellow (despite your co2 emisions!!) and i wouldn't want any harm to come to you or anyone else.

i'm really don't have that kind of relationship with all of you.

I see. So, with loved ones you wouldn't call them morons or idiots, you'd appeal to them differently... but complete strangers you don't mind forging rational dialogue and relying on raw white-knuckled defamation of character. --What an exercise in futility.

If that makes complete sense to you, that's fine.

It was worth a try, I guess. Best regards.

I used to on my old phone, where I could actually feel the buttons and woulda have to look down to type. But the iPhone changes all of that. I've tried once on my iPhone, and it was nearly impossible.

I can understand people in Europe doing this less, since all of their cars are manual, but in the US a lot of the cars are automatic.
