Usually just to make backup DVDs or rip DVDs. Of course the occasional software install. Not for much but it's nice to have one machine with at least one.

Just out of curiosity, how will this 2nd hard drive be connected? Some freaky wiring or what?

If it were my only machine, I'd leave it in. But I have a Mac Mini and a Mac Pro so I'm ditching the optical. When I travel I'll have my Air superdrive.

Good point, I forgot about that. I could do without in my Laptop but would still need one within reach. I use that sucker several times a week for burning/ripping etc.

Thanks!
And I have ad my macbook for almost a mont, and i have used it a lot. Mainly ripping. But I will use it a lot on dvds.

I always archive my files on optical media. Easier to store off-site. Now with the Air I use my Mac Pro's drive to burn stuff (it's called Toast 10).

Getting a new MBP tomorrow and am going to replace the optical drive with my 7200RPM 500GB for iTunes and internal scratch disk, and use the X-25 160GB Intel as my boot drive. I have a modified MacBook Air superdrive that I can use for the few times I actually use optical media. So just wondering, how often people actually use their superdrives.

It's going to be Tuesday before you get it. :p

I've used it for a whopping 4 DVD's (.iso burns of stuff), aboug 15 CD's (my car plays MP3/WMA so I'm always burning new media for it), and that's about it.

Oh, and I installed Snow Leopard and when I bootcamp'd XP/Win7 I used it for that (and the installation of the Apple software in XP)

I've thought of an optibay thing. Does anyone know if the HDD spins up all the time or only when needed?

One huge benefit of the SSD is not having that thing (HDD) whirring all the time. At least for me.

Only for upgrading and installing software. But, for the few times that I will use it, it would be a pain not to have it.

u will most likely hear the fan blazing before you hear the hard drive.

Nope. Fan as quiet as can be 80% of the time. I have a Scorpio Black that makes a bit of noise and has some vibration that's very annoying 100% of the time. Even the standard drive makes noise compared to the SSD.

It's not the drive. I've had a few and they all make noise/vibration. Some more than others but it's there.

Felt like throwing in my 2 cents:

I use it rarely. But when I do it's handy.

2-3 times a month to pop in a DVD and watch a movie.
2-3 times a month to burn a CD to listen to in the car.

and 2-4 times a year to burn an iDVD project for college assignments which really come in handy.

A few weeks ago I got my 13in. MBP and got it rather than the Macbook Air for the 2 reasons of knowing i'd need an optical drive at some point (mainly for those important school projects and secondly cause I already had a 500GB HD that I believe would not fit in the macbook air...iono. lol.

I guess I'm just the wierdo here. I just finished installing a Blu ray burner in my macbook Pro. I'm a video editor though. So i burn discs often for clients. Plus i watch movies on my 17" MBP when i'm away from the office.
