So basically, if you have a really old hotmail account, you're lucky, and you're able to setup forwarding to Gmail,

Nope. My account is over 9 years old, and I get no forwarding at all. I think it has to do with location. It works in Canada and the UK, but not in the US, seemingly.

...as I stated before, my account is very old...at least 15 or more years. I live in the U.S. and do not pay for msn. Mine forwards just fine, so what you are saying is not entirely accurate. I think milani is a lot closer to the explanation and why some do and some don't work. It seems to work differently for different people in different areas and there is no one single fix all for this situation. Someone will eventually figure it out and I think milani is on the right track to that endeavor.

Good Luck All

I changed to Gmail so I could get a more seamless experience on the iphone.
It's silly paying for POP3 when you get IMAP for free on GMail.

Plus I was getting fed up of hotmail addresses being blocked amongst many other reasons.

It took me ages to remember all the sites I'd signed up too, but it was worth it.

I still pay for POP for the time being incase anyone doesn't know I've changed my address and my hotmail goes to my googlemail for me to check there.

I wish this was true.

I have my Hotmail account since 1995 and I am not able to forward to Gmail, only to accounts on the MSN family.:(

Are you using a US account? It might be a combination of age + location then. Because there are a lot of people who ARE able to forward to Gmail, and just as many who can't. I really don't know when or how Hotmail had their forwarding setup, and when or how they changed it. No doubt they should have kept the option alive. It might be worthwhile to test each @ account type (msn, hotmail, live), because if you can find one that allows forwarding to any @domain, you could forward your hotmail to that account, and then forward the forwarded stuff to Gmail: Hotmail>> MSN, Hotmail, Live (whatever works)>> Gmail>> iPhone.

If people start trying different regions, types, etc, I bet someone might find a successful combination. On the other hand, Hotmail might have completely changed their settings for all new accounts, in which case there might be no way to do it other than to pay. It might be more worthwhile to just catalogue all your contacts and switch over to Gmail or YahooMail.

Hi Milani,

I am in San Diego, CA. So I have no idea why I can't forward.
Too bad.
I am thinking in switch to gmail, the problem is I have so many accounts all over that the hotmail is my email to set it up, so to change it all is a gigantic pain.
I guess, I will just live with that.
I can access hotmail on the iphone it using mobilelive, but is just a bad set up by MSN.

I had to buy POP access for hotmail then put the pop settings into gmails account settings page somewhere.

Yah I'm not at all sure how or why some accounts can forward and other's can't. I have a feeling that Microsoft intended ALL accounts to only be able to forward to other accounts Microsoft accounts, and not to any email for free (like Gmail which is what I'm doing now). I'm just glad I somehow missed the cut, although I suspect that in future I will suddenly lose the ability to forward to Gmail as I can now. That's why while I have my hotmail account setup on my iPhone for the time being, I'm slowly phasing out my Hotmail account. It's an inferior service anyway, so there is really no use in sticking with it if I don't have to. It'll just be my signup email - and junk box, I guess.

maybe if we all pitch in and bombard msn with complaints of them changing this policy the squeaky wheel may get the grease? btw how is it some people got izymail set up for free? i try setting up the simplest one and they are asking 17 bucks annually, something izymail decided to do now as they are one of the few options to get hotmail to mail on iphone? i've had my hotmail for over 9 years and i don't have the forward option either, so i'm very sure hotmail is going threw the works to have all msn accounts unable to forward emails

It's really hard to say if Microsoft is actually going to change everyone's accounts or not. I anticipate my account being changed eventually, but that's why I've basically stopped using Hotmail for anything important. Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and MobileMe are far better options anyway. I have a feeling though, that in due time Microsoft might go the other way, realizing that in modern times people like to check their email from a mail client OTHER than one that opens by typing http... into a browser.

the problem with msn or microsoft in general is, they still believe they are the only choice in computing world; and in this case their email is "number 1". i am now taking list of all the sites i have my hotmail logged into and probably get a gmail account, but msn has got to get with the times. they know hotmail is incredibly mediocre, and if they want to keep their customer base they should adapt to the times and with their rivals. I emailed that even AOL offers POP3 and that should be an insult to them.

I've used it for a couple of months now and it integrates seamlessly with iPhone's mail app. It sends as yourname@hotmail.com and that is the address the recipient sees as well, using a 'dynamic sender' function.

It shows full embedded HTML email, and formatting can be set at the website so any email can be converted to text-only on the iPhone if needed, plus image resizing, etc. For a free service, it's the best I've seen.

If memory serves, there were rumblings a while back from Microsoft who said that at some stage they aimed to provide full POP3 capability to free Hotmail accounts, at no extra cost. Before I grow a beard waiting, I'll be using MoMail until that actually happens. You still need to manually fetch mail, but it's a decent trade-off. It's worth giving it a go as it doesn't cost money. Which is nice.

Microsoft tries to implement a third protocol: HTTP access. This way, Outlook, Windows Live Mail etc. can synchronize folders with Windows Live/Hotmail. But this HTTP access works only for the free accounts with Microsoft software like Entourage.
