I'm willing to bet that all of this years phones will have a function area. The 7 already gave up the physical button and I truly believe that the 7s will expand upon that and make that unused space around the circle useable.

Because after all, this is all going to be baked into iOS 11 and a function area is something that Apple has been working on since before the iPhone 5.
I don't think it's a coincidence that the headphone jack was removed to make way for this. I truly believe that the 7s home "button will be a separate OLED touch bar and function exactly as that on the 8.

After reading this on the Verge: http://www.theverge.com/circuitbrea...android-buttons-gestures-moto-huawei-mwc-2017

I think this function bar could work the same way:

  • If you want to go home, 3D Touch the virtual home button (this will prevent you from accidentally going home like with Android's soft keys). I've tried 3D Touch clicking an icon and then pressing the home button and repeating that process a couple of times and I think this could be a good replacement. However, you can't feel where the home button is, but that might change in the future:
Maybe they'll even make a small indent in the glass of the touch screen where the software home button will be.
  • Force clicking will open multitasking. This would just feel like on the MacBooks.
  • Swiping left to right will go back in apps.
  • Swiping right to left will go forward in apps.
  • Swiping down will open Notification Center.
  • Swiping up will open Control Center.

But who knows what Apple has in store for use. Software wise we won't know until the final unveil as the hardware will leak but the software most probably won't.

Apple calls Androids interface clunky and inelegant. Then copies it's worst feature. Good thing all the Apple cult members are here to tell us this bad idea is now revolutionary. It's amazing how people here say things like "the home button is better than Androids three button system" and then as soon as Apple appears to copy it all of a sudden it's the best idea ever. Good grief.

Same so called function area should be available to be used as plain display area depending on what one is doing (playing games or watching videos)...

6:52am, did you stay up all night setting up those strawmen you enjoy knocking down?

You should probably get a 4G 12.9" iPad Pro & use it as a phone.
That, really, is the PERFECT size for a phone.

#letsdontberidiculous

Yeah because there's only ONE appropriate size for an iPhone

Agreed!!!
I've seen phones like the Mega that are as big as 6.1" & obviously the SE which is 4".
I think those each butt up against the high & low points of usability.
So, basically- 4-6"... anything smaller, & you'd probably be better off w/ a flip and anything larger, you're just using an actual tablet at that point.
I just think drawing a line in the sand at the high or low end.... like saying "anything smaller than 5.5" is useless" is a silly sentiment.

I never said useless, I said my minimum "usable" size was 5.5". My personal preference. I was only speaking for myself. And as a side note, I'm perfectly cool with getting a 7S Plus and not the 10th anniversary uber exclusive iPhone. I upgrade every year so it doesn't matter to me. Eventually they will all be OLED anyway.

This article pretends to answer the yet unanswerable question of exactly how this could work, and then concludes, "we really don't know how it could work."

Great.

Nothing annoys me more than the tech blog industry clamoring for a certain feature that they can't explain. Even just from a UI perspective, you can't explain how it will work. Then you'll complain when it doesn't really happen.

Why not make the sleep/wake button the home button? Press once to quit the app. Again to turn off display. Hold for Siri. Hold extra long to power off.

I don't get it. Don't you always need a home button displayed? When would I ever be doing something where I wouldn't need the home button? Maybe movies. What other uses for not being able to quickly return home would make the devices easier?

This could make sense, but I feel like it will hinder multitasking. I never got used to gestured multitasking, and still use the home button on my iPad.

I used to have a jailbreak tweak back in the day that with a swipe up it would be like I pressed the home button and the springboard would slide into view. It was awesome in my opinion. I suppose that combined with force touch to turn on the display could make the home button unnecessary

That diagram has the 5.15" usable area as 1:2.17 aspect ratio (i.e. much taller than 1:1.77 of current iPhones). Doesn't seem right to me. Sure, have extra screen for a function row, edge buttons and so on. But what's left should be the traditional size
[doublepost=1488826266][/doublepost]Also, at first I thought: if they can add a bigger screen to a device the same size as my current 4.7" iPhone, then what's not to like? But in reality, a bigger screen always means more stretching and reaching around for all corners of the phone, however slim the bezel is. Slim bezel certainly helps though.

Wouldn't the option of leaving the Touch ID area visible even when the screen is off cause a crazy amount of burn in? I could just imagine that circle there for 5-8 hours a day. Would look great to see its ghost as I try to watch videos

I could imagine picking the device up and the secondary screen activating, rather than the full display.. showing notification counts, etc.. I don't think they would leave the secondary screen active whilst the phone hasn't been picked up. Maybe with a longer time out than the primary screen.

Let's not forget the Apple Remote UI...
And this... when I first used it I nearly touched the screen... Now it would make sense!

That's absolutely terrible. There are plenty of people like you in the margins that think absolutely terrible UX is acceptable. Hell, they made Android.

This is the problem that no one wants to address. This is not some niche gadgety Android device that no real person will ever use in volume. This is the iPhone. It will have a permanent fixed Home Button for ease of use and accessibility to all.

Now, if that Home Button is a virtual button that occupies a virtual space at the bottom of the display, i.e. a 'Touch Bar', thats an incidental matter.

You could've just said it will be like Android's on screen navigation setup... Seems fitting that Apple would copy one of the most iconic differences between iOS and Android for their 10th anniversary phone. I look forward to my iPhone friends demonstrating their "brand new" back button!

The back button on android is great. iOS should have had one years ago, I'm really looking forward to this

I could see how this might work. Turn the phone landscape and you still get edit tools in fullscreen mode.

They could have done that anyway (look how much space there is), they're just lazy.

The iconic home button has been a mainstay of Apple design ever since the first iPhone debuted in 2007. Even the buttons on the elevators at Apple Park are said to resemble it. The button's tactile circularity promises an escape route to familiarity should users get lost or apps go wrong. However, its delicate components converge upon a recess in the phone's bezel, an area that could otherwise provide extra space to fit a larger display within the same handset profile.

Rumors that the "iPhone 8" will replace the home button as we know it with an entirely virtual one can be traced back to April 2016. More recently, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that Apple will introduce a functionally distinct area below the screen exclusively for displaying virtual buttons, with a rumor over the weekend seeming to suggest that such a "function bar" is the reason behind conflicting reports over the display size of an upcoming OLED iPhone.

Before the "function bar" rumor first surfaced, MacRumors forum member deuxani shared concept images, reproduced below, that offer some context for imagining how the bar might work.
