Since when have you seen an everyday consumer with their lousy 360p cameras doing chroma keying, color correction and stabilization on FCP X?

----------

You might have an external SSD, but how huge is it, 64? 128? SSDs are expensive. And usually even overpriced.

256GB...which is plenty. The current commercial I am working on off of it is using 16GB.

Pro users who uses pro apps such as Logic Pro and Final Cut Studio needs scratch disks. And depending on their project, it could go up to 50 terabytes. SSD just simply cannot fit in their budget. Besides, I used a HDD before, it wasn't that horrible when it comes to playing 1080p.

Not when working on a project that has 56 CG layers that all need to be read at once.

RAID - redundant array of independent disks

Do me a favor and throw a raid into a laptop bag. Good luck ;)

----------

Actually, that's exactly what I do. ;)
I might not be a 'professional' yet, but as a last year student going into the film/media industry, I need something that's super portable and powerful. Honestly, if portability isn't an issue, why get a laptop?

I am currently working on a major television commercial and a major feature film on my rMBP. It actually runs better than the Mac pro I am also working on.

Oh yeah! Why didn't I think of that? Maybe because I'll be doing Motion Graphics later when I go camping! Or maybe if I'll be doing Dreamweaver and Fireworks at the picnic! Oh, and also, I'll be color correcting, chroma keying and stabilizing at the french restaurant where I'll be having my romantic dinner!

I really should have thought about me bringing my 50 TB scratch disk along with me in the park.

It really doesn't make sense for one to bring RAID along with them. It is best left alone at the workstation.

Or in reality, I will be doing high end compositing for feature films and television at various studios across la. I am currently working in house on a film working off the network via thunderbolt to Ethernet and doing revisions for a commercial for a different studio off my ssd. Good luck pulling that off on a 5400rpm hdd.

SSD really is no problem for rich people. But for most people who couldn't even afford 256 GB of SSD, HDD is the best solution.

On a feature film, you shoot the entire thing first then you do post production which means staying at one place (At least that's what I know of).

Besides, when did studios even use Laptops as their main machine for post production?

I work on visual effects. I have a Mac pro that I am working on. I am also working on my rMBP. My rMBP is outperforming the Mac pro. So I tend to refer back to it a lot. I work 100% freelance. I'm not only working on one project at a time. I can only be in one place at a time. Funny you should mention staying in one place tho. I am now working on the same movie I worked on the end of last year and beginning of this year, only at a different studio.

As for being rich. I use my computers to make money. Not because I'm rich and just spend money. My Mac pro was paid for in full by working on drag me to hell. This new rMBP will pay for itself in a couple weeks.

50 TB.

SSD Route
512 GB x 100 = 50 TB.
512 GB = $400
$400 x 100= $40,000.

HDD Route
2TB x 25 = 50 TB
2 TB = $120
$120 = $3,000

$40,000 vs $3,000
I'm confused as to what your complaint is. You said you wanted HDD because you needed more space in your laptop. 768GB is a lot of space. If you need more than that, but don't need more than 2TB and don't want to use an external, then the rMBP isn't for you. You can't make everybody happy. If you have that specific of storage needs then you're out of luck, sorry.

What is this price talk about now? You're not putting 50TB in your laptop I'm pretty sure. If you need mass external storage SSDs are an awful idea, no doubt about that.

ssd is not meant for mass storage just yet...its meant for speed. You would think of it more on a project to project basis. 512GB is plenty for most projects...depending on your capacity. An editor needs a raid to carry the massive amount of media...but for someone like me that works on one shot at a time, 256GB is plenty.

In what way do you think thickness has anything to do with power?

In terms of battery power - bigger battery

In terms of computational power - bigger heatsinks

Both equal either longer performance (battery) or faster performance (better thermal capacity = higher stable clock speeds; or longer boost durations).

It's not just about it's thickness. It's about the performance too.

Its one of the most powerful laptops you can buy right now....what parts did they omit? Keep in mind the near technical miracle apple had to pull off to get the retina screen working properly.

Well bringing RAID may be a good idea to get rid of the bugs so you aren't scratching while camping in the park

Portability is not that much of an issue. You will still need portability (Maybe if you go to work and go home), but you will not really need thinness. Besides, the cMBP looks great already. And I'm willing to sacrifice a few millimeters for a better graphics card.

I can agree with the last part...
But that's not the point I was trying to make. I was responding to :
... It's not like we're doing these intense tasks on the road (do you?)...
I was trying to point out that if you're not doing intensive tasks on the road, ie. portability of a laptop, then the point of having a laptop (whether a cMBP or rMBP) is moot.

I surf the web, listen to music, FaceTime, and do everything a netbook does on my pro computer when on the road. Sure, it could do intense stuff but the battery life isn't going to last long.
