As others have already mentioned, the Dynamic Island is essentially a notch, but in a slightly different location, and with a software upgrade. That software upgrade requires additional width - being the right and left side you mentioned.

If the software portion of Dynamic Island were completely removed, the area needed would be substantially smaller. A hole punch would be even smaller.
Yes but I’m including the software because it’s obviously a part of it whereas it’s not with the notch. I’m not sure if I agree or disagree. That it would’ve been smaller without the software. I have no engineering knowledge to make a comment on that.

As I said, this is not a technical limitation of the notch. It's a marketing choice by Apple. Apple chose not to add the software upgrade to the notch because they want people to view Dynamic Island as an upgrade, despite its limitations.

But they could include a pseudo island where it expands as a temporary thing and contracts.
They already do this. The Dynamic Island increases in size when you interact with it.

I just came here to say, that is one hideous AI picture right there. Look at the hand! Does MR staff even proof this stuff anymore? lol

Smaller in what sense? The software part of the DI only needs space when it's actually used, but the same is true for any feature that needs to be displayed on the screen. They probably could make some of that smaller if they moved it into the general status bar, but presumably they would need to move the FaceID hardware into the bezels und decrease the screen size.

I agree with you that a hole punch would take up less screen space, but what's left of the notch is needed for FaceID, so not really a software question.

Yeah you’re probably right. The reason for making the Dynamic Island is probably partially because it allows making the bezel smaller. The downside is now it is located deeper into the screen, but they made it more palatable by adding the software upgrade.

highly unlikely that it would come out so soon. first they'd have to release about 3-4 versions of the cutout camera phone without the pill/island. that's another 3-4 years. then they'll release a folded phone. that's another 2-3 years. after that they'll need to make multiple versions of that to milk some more money using outdated tech. only then they might consider releasing an all-around screen phone, so that will be at least 10 years from now, if not more.

IDK…I’ve dropped. My 16 Max phone face down caseless on these rugged uneven New England streets more than once and zero shattered glass…I can certainly see Apple successfully creating a tough durable all exposed phone..
all it takes it one wrong angle drop. I used to go caseless back in the old days when iPhones were small and light and those phones survived all the drops... and then the 6 plus came out, all heavy and big glass and I put a paper thin case on it. I knocked it off the elliptical machine a the gym and it hit the machines at an angle before hitting the soft rubber floor and it completely shattered. I've never not used a fully protective case since. I can imagine how bad it would be to drop something with glass corners. it would shatter every time.

Not happening. Seems like this leaker just says whatever they want.

Also, my brain doesn't like this AI image. The hand seems to have the right number of digits. Maybe it's the weird fold in the back of hand?

I'm glad someone mentioned this! That hand is awful and uncanny.

Agree. And while the flat glass construction of the 15 / 16 / 17 are good at reducing that risk, having an all-glass screen enclosure is a recipe for disaster.

not every time, especially not if apple enforces the corners/edges somehow, an even thicker glass that makes it look like tinted (? what's that word....ph yeah, "frosted") glass....first iteration won't have clear screen EVERYWHERE, just front and back, is my guess....edges would glow or whatever lol plus buttons somehow....man apple is the best.

As far as I know. Widespread, all iPhone 17 Pro Max have it. One worse than the other.

Plugin the iPhone 17 PM to charge and listen to the bottom speaker you will hear a jossing noise, depending what you do on your phone if it is stressing the sound will get louder.

Already received info from employees its a hardware issue they will not be able to fix with updates via software.
I might be getting deaf then, as i type this my 17 PM is plugged and no whine, i use the phone regularly, and no noise.

Eagerly waiting for the 20th anniversary iPhone and looking forward to hearing all rumors. FaceID is a must for me and happy to hear that Apple has no plans to shift to TouchID for the 20th anniversary model. Though I was waiting for Apple to launch a foldable for so long, it is extremely disappointing to hear that it will lack FaceID and telephoto lens. Also looks like the foldable will have much smaller screen than what I was expecting.
