I do sympathize with you OP, because i've had a HUGE amount of issues with my iPhone 5's and replacements. I am surprised they have not told you they have "flagged" your account due to the amount of replacements you have like they've done to me.

I have had every single issue verified by a genius, I am not sure your argument is valid in terms of getting a replacement due to the glass, but I would definitely just pay up, like you already did, and just cut your loses. I feel indifferent like you, and if you're not happy, do not get another iPhone when the future ones come out.

If you feel so strongly, cut your losses and keep on going, after this last replacement i've had, I will not be going back if there is another issue. I'll simply just buy a different phone. Simple. :)

Yep, that's exactly what I did and am not going to bother getting another replacement if the iPhone 5 I have breaks down with some other problem. I'm just simply going to eBay the phone as a used broken one and buy something else.

CONCLUSION

I picked up my iPhone 5 and paid $166 after tax for the repair. For those of you asking about my pocket that I use to keep my phone in:

1) I don't wear skinny jeans.
2) I never physically ran into anyone.
3) I never ran into a wall.
4) I never did anything outside my normal routine.

It may be hard to believe, I expected 95% of the Internet to think that I somehow did it. In the end, even if I'm right, there's no way to prove it. I'm moving on.

On a side note, I'm now protecting my iPhone 5 with just a full body Ghost Armor, and no case. I used to buy different cases in different colors to swap cases once in awhile for fashion purposes but since a case won't stop the screen from cracking anyway I'm just gonna enjoy the design of iPhone for once and not have something cover it. It's not a bad thing since all my engineering friends/coworkers at work always make fun of me for using cases. They've never used cases and not once have they cracked the screens, even after dropping them.

Anyway, I'm glad I could share my story with MacRumors. Thanks for reading!

If there had been a weak spot in the glass, prior to your leaving the APPLE store, at any time it could have actually cracked spontaneously, without you even touching it. The problem is, that happens very rarely, and you have no way to prove it. That's unfortunate for you, but put yourself in their place. Cough up, and chalk it up to experience.

Bend it like Beckham

I seem to remember that Posh Beckham...worth about £100 million...took an iPad back after one of the kids dropped it and bust the screen....got. FREE replacement.
OK...iPhone it aint.? but the principle!!!

proof or was this just tabloid bs?

I, and others, might have been more inclined to believe you if it wasn't for the click-bait title.

We're only seeing one (heavily biased) side to the story here.

I highly doubt it.

Apple caters to customers like you... who could you complain to the next time you have a phone?

These threads seem to go the same way that the "I was abducted by aliens" threads seem to go...

Some things you need to just keep to yourself. ;)

In the UK it would be Apples job to prove it was your fault, not your job to prove it wasn't. At least for the first six months. After that, the burden of proof is on you.

Consumer laws = win.

Hi Matttye

I've been considering wether or not to purchase Apple Care for my iPhone because I've been one of the unlucky few who have been handed defective handsets time after time (this time it seems I finally got a proper). However, on the Apple website it states that under UK Consumer Laws, they *should* extend the warranty period for more than just one year.

Could you shed some light on this issue? I'd most appreciate it.

I'm not saying the OP is to blame here, but I put my launch day iPhone 5 in my pants/shorts/jeans pocket everyday, and I have yet to encounter a crack on the front or back of the screen. I even accidently sat on my phone as I was getting into the car. The phone is still intact, with no cracks on the screen.

There could have been a small crack on the replacement phone when the Genius associate gave it to the OP. However, it should have been his responsibility to check out the front, back and sides of the phone to ensure there were no flaws on the body at all. Had he spotted the crack, he could have nipped the whole situation in the bud by pointing it out to the Genius, and they could have gone back and got him another phone.

Yes, it sucks the OP had to go through all this (considering this is his, what? 4th iPhone?) But it is what it is. Apple surely did not steal $150 from you.

If you're still heated about all this, it may not hurt to give Apple customer service a call about your experience.

By something else, I could mean 5S, 4S, or maybe even a Samsung Galaxy.

For now, my iPhone 5 is working the way it should, and hopefully it stays that way...

Thanks for the advice. I will think about calling Apple customer service, but what can they do about it and will they keep a record of it in their database?

Maybe I missed it but do you carry your phone in front or back pocket?

That's what they all say.
The cracked screen was not my fault. It cracked on its own....

perfect post. They didn't steal from you; regardless of who caused the crack, they have no way of knowing it wasn't you.

It's an unfortunate situation, but they didn't steal from you. Relax on the hyperbole.

My power button has been acting up or a few weeks now but I didn't want to lose my JB so I just used activator to set up an alternate lock. This am the tip of a headphone jack came off in my phone leaving it in headphone mode. I tried to get it out but couldn't so I took it in for replacement. Genius said the h/p deal made my phone OOW but he would try to over look it. I informed him if his decision is to not replace my phone then he should come back with a manager because things are going to get heated and loud. The fact that there is something in the HP jack does not affect the power button one bit. I won't let a billion dollar company bend me over for a BS "rule" in their warranty. He did replace the phone (iOS 6.1.4 ) and I told him sucks that he takes both barrels when Apple corp acts like a douche but that's the way it goes. I know I'm an ass when I'm not satisfied with the situation but THEY chose that job with the knowledge they may be dealing with heated customers.

Usually you're the one bashing others for returning their phones. It's nice to see you've now been on the other side of that coin. I'm glad you got a replacement, however. The headphone jack thing voiding the warranty sounds nuts to me.

I once got a 4S from Verizon via an upgrade that was in a sealed box and had a chip in the glass in the upper top right hand corner near where the glass meets the aluminum bezel. I sent it back to VZW immediately. One little drop or whatever and that chip runs and Apple will do nothing for me.

I was expecting these responses, though I was hoping to hear from people with similar experiences.

This is a situation where you won't know what I'm going through unless you were in my shoes. I'm saying I never dropped my iPhone and it should never crack like that, but for all you know I did drop it and I'm simply mad that Apple doesn't replace it without question.

Sigh, I did pay for the damages and hopefully I won't have any more iPhone 5 problems. I never upgrade my iPhone when I don't have eligibility, but in this case I can't wait until I dump the 5 and get a 5S.

I HEAR what you're saying. But you and the apple rep both inspected it and it wasn't cracked. Sooooo, this might be just one of those losses in life. maybe it hit something just the right way under your seat, who knows. But Apple can't eat something when they DEFINITELY didn't cause it.

I don't really get the anger. You said yourself there's no way Apple could be sure you didn't break it yourself, and screen cracks are very rarely a manufacturing flaw. Plus, having gotten your iPhone replaced four times already, it doesn't look like you're unlucky, but that you find reasons to get a new phone every so often. Not saying that's the case, but just what Apple is likely to see. It sucks, but thems the breaks.

As for having iOS 7 on it, well, you definitely should have restored. I'm on my original iPhone 5, which I will eventually bring in to the genius bar for replacement, as I have some serious dust spots trapped between the lens and the sensor that are visible in every picture. However, since I'm jailbroken, I'm just going to put up with it until we get close to the 1 year point, then I'll bring it in and swap it (so I don't lose my jailbreak until then). Since my wife and I do an upgrade pass down every year (I get the new iPhone, she gets my old one, we sell her old one), she'll have a nice shiny new iPhone without dust spots, and I'll have the 5S or whatever comes out then. iOS7 has most of the things I jailbreak for, so losing it then isn't a big deal for me.

But anyway, the point is: I know to restore before bringing it in for the dust issue.

Why is this thread still going ? Put it into the garbage dump already. Nothing more than be said.

I'm wondering how a broken volume button is different from a cracked screen? They are both something broken ( broken trace/contact in the volume button ) in the phone, possibly due to the user mistreatment.

Why does Apple replace for one and not the other?
