How do other people get around this? You called someone from your favorite list, you have a conversation with them, you say goodbye and go to hit the end button, but they end the call a fraction of a second before you do. Your finger is already heading toward the place on the screen where the end button was, but you’re too late! It vanishes before the press, and you now accidentally dial your grandma, whose contact row on the favorite screen is where the end button was. You quickly end that call, but she still sees it as a missed call, and calls back, and now you’re stuck in a 60 minute conversation about the latest senior living gossip in the retirement community. 😂

I joke for emphasis, but in reality, this is really annoying and I accidentally dial people all the time because of this, and can’t end the call without them seeing the “missed call”. I’m surprised we’re on iOS 18 and this is still a thing Apple hasn’t done anything about. We have a million emojis we don’t need, but accidental dialing? Nah…not something to worry about…

We just apologize for making an accidental call, unless we made it in our pocket. In such case we apologize later on if they ask. 😊

Everyone on my favorites list has message as the only option so I have not had this scenario ever happen.. Maybe you should just wait for them to end the call considering that's what has been happening anyway

You say "hi" to grandma, because she loves you, misses you, and you'll regret not having those random conversations with her one day. (But yes, I see this as an issue - I limit it by having very few favorites, because there aren't that many people I want to talk to, so the list is blank at the bottom)

A few things:

1. I rarely end the call first. I wait for the other person to hang up.

2. I’m never just sitting in the Phone app at the end of the call because at some point, I used my phone to look at something else.

3. I have 3 favorites, and the last time I initiated a call to any of them was over two months ago. (They may have called me since then though.) And when I did call, I’m not even sure I did it from the Favorites page.

This happens to me frequently. Not just from the favorites list, but also the recent calls list. I'm still on iOS 17. I don't recall this happening all along and I want to say this is a recent thing. I'm not really sure what a good solution is. Maybe if the other person ends the call first it can stick on the phone screen for an extra half second or so.

I like this option. May need to do that on mine. Sucks we have to do a work around.

Absolutely agree. And I do have those conversations with her if she's the one my favorite was on and I accidentally dial.

If it's a common problem for you, why not use the side button to end the call instead?
Didn't know that was even an option. Looking at how to do that now on YouTube. Thanks for the heads up on that. Will need to retrain my brain to use that now instead of the end button.

Just wanted to add that I fully agree with this. But in my case is mostly the recent call list (and once or twice i accidentally ended up calling my grandma…!). One easy solution would be to default the phone to the Home Screen when the other person ends the call. Not ideal, but would solve the problem until they could come up with a better solution.

This is a suggestion from the Apple Forum thread I posted above. I just tried it and it does seem to work, as when the call is ended, you aren't in the phone app any longer. You do need to go back to the call screen using the green phone symbol in the menu bar, however, so it's an extra step. But seems to help:

This is iOS 17+ only, temporary workaround. It's not perfect and has its own limit.
At least you won't call someone accidently by hanging up little too late.

1. Open Shortcuts app (It's integrated in iOS)
2. Tap "Automation" at the bottom of the screen
3. Tap "New Automation".
4. Scroll down and tap "App".
5. Tap "Choose" and select "Phone" then "Done".
6. Unmark "Is Opened" and mark "Is Closed". (Make sure ONLY "Is Closed" is marked.)
7. Mark "Run immediately"
8. Tap "Next" at the top right.
9. On the screen, tap "New Blank Automation".
10. Tap "Add Action".
11. Type in "go to" in the search box and tap "Go to Home Screen" that pops up below.
12. Tap "Done".”

Workflow was bought by Apple in 2018 and rebranded as Shortcuts when iOS 12 was releases in late 2018... Shortcuts was installed by default in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13...

Those that are still on older iOS versions can attempt to try the steps mentioned above to see if it helps...

Never had this as I keep my favorites trimmed to like 6 people.

One thing that has always been a problem though is accidentally hanging up on people when trying to just turn off the phone screen. They should make an option to not have the side button end calls

Awesome thanks!

This has driven me bonkers for so long!

They do...

Settings -> Accessibility -> Touch -> Prevent Lock to End Call
Ok. I’m confused now. I always turn my screen off while on a call by pressing the side button, and it never hangs up the call. (I actually didn’t even realize you could hang up that way. Or maybe I knew that in the past but forgot.)

So I checked this setting, and I did not change it (Prevent is off). So… Is ending the call with the side button something other than a single button press, or am I crazy?

And if it is something else (double press, etc.), then how are people having trouble turning off the screen?

That's not what this is about.

This is about accidentally calling people in the Recents tab.

EDIT: Apologies, I just realized that this is in fact about calling people on the Favorite list.

I don't see an option to delete my post.

Looks like the side button ending the call only applies when you're using the iPhone normally (through the earpiece). If you've got it on speaker or using a HomePod (and guessing AirPods), then the side button turns off the screen instead.
