Ok. I’m confused now. I always turn my screen off while on a call by pressing the side button, and it never hangs up the call. (I actually didn’t even realize you could hang up that way. Or maybe I knew that in the past but forgot.)

So I checked this setting, and I did not change it (Prevent is off). So… Is ending the call with the side button something other than a single button press, or am I crazy?

And if it is something else (double press, etc.), then how are people having trouble turning off the screen?
I really haven’t figured out how it works to be honest. It doesn’t always hang up the call, it seems like it doesn’t on speakerphone, not sure about when airpods or car bluetooth are connected. It’s just a single press, like locking the screen

Looks like the side button ending the call only applies when you're using the iPhone normally (through the earpiece). If you've got it on speaker or using a HomePod (and guessing AirPods), then the side button turns off the screen instead.
Well that makes sense then. I’m usually on speakerphone. And if I were using the earpiece, I wouldn’t need to press the button to turn the screen off.

Weird. I've had iPhones since the first one and I've literally never done this. 🥸 How often does this happen to others?
Never happened to me as well. And I've owned an iPhone since its original launch.

I've done this accidental dialing after ending a call a few times myself, but it only started for me when Apple changed the UI of the Phone app when in a call in iOS 17. Previously, the End Call button was at the bottom by itself. Now the other buttons were moved to the bottom. Maybe there was something in the pre-iOS 17 location that this wasn't a problem.

I read that this would be released with iOS 18 and I can’t find it…it is very useful to a lot of people…

They turned the area to trigger a call into a little button during the beta cycle but then reversed the change in a later beta.

I honestly have no clue what you’re talking about. I’ve never had it happen
Pretty easy to try it if you use two phones.

Initiate a call to a second phone from your Recents list. While on the phone screen, simulate that you are about to hang up by holding your finger is over the End Call button. Then from the other phone, end the call. Now, had you attempted to press the End Call button on your phone a split second after the call ended, you would accidentally dial whichever number your finger is hovering over.

I do this quite often.
