Just trying to decide if I want to stick my head in the Lions jaw. My machine meets minimum specs C2Duo MacBook Pro. Just upgraded from 2 to 4GB RAM since SL is a bit sluggish with 2 users running many windows. Using a little google fu it's unclear if my fall 2007 MBP will run faster or slower. And looks like some of the gestures won't work unless I buy a Magic device?

I did almost exactly what the original poster did:

- Made sure all software up to date
- Looked through my Applications folder and deleted everything I haven't used in a long time
- Went through my /Library folders and deleted any leftover Application support folders (going to do this now actually)
- Ran OnyX to clean up caches and run maintenance scripts etc.
- Rebooted from DVD and Repaired Disk (number of files was out by 2 (i think) so a small repair was done)
- Backed up to TimeMachine on two different drives
- Repaired disk permissions

Now I just have to decide whether I am going to just upgrade or do a clean install and restore what I want from TimeMachine. What do you guys recommend?

In our house we have a Mac Pro, which I use for mainly for my music, and a 2010 MacBook Pro 13", which my wife and I both use for general internet, word processing etc.

I have prepared for Lion by creating a new partition on my Mac Pro (there is plenty of space on the system drive which is 640GB), and cloning my system to that.

When I have downloaded Lion, I will do an upgrade installation on the new partition, and test all my application thoroughly. As and when I am happy that everything is working nicely, I will let that partition take over and get rid of the Snow Leopard one.

In the meantime, if there are any issues, I just continue with Snow Leopard until they are resolved to my satisfaction.

I'm not sure about the MacBook Pro yet. I should imagine that I will upgrade that quite quickly, as the applications we use on that are much more run-of-the-mill than some of my oddball music software, where there may well be problems. I'll still wait until I have tested Lion on the Mac Pro, though.

I am really looking forward to Logic Pro in full-screen.

Cloned my boot drive to a spare partition in my MP. I will upgrade that to Lion and run from there to test app compatibility before messing with my primary boot drive (SSD). I will probably experiment with a clean install and app migration on the spare as well - do not want to have to reinstall everything.

I have way too many specialized apps (as well as relying on TrueCrypt and a patched 64 bit version of MacFUSE) to jump right in to a permanent upgrade.

I'm going to be purchasing an SSD to put in drive bay 1, and a bracket so I can move the drive that's currently there into my spare optical bay. This way I can have a 128gb OS volume that can support Windows if necessary, and keep my nice 2.5tb striped RAID array. This should also make it easier to do a clean install of Lion.

Once I've done the clean install, I'll move my users folders to the 2.5tb drive (is it okay to just symlink /Users or is the move user account option in system preferences the only way?). I'll then restore all my files from back-up and try to better organise everything, possibly with a view toward importing TV Shows and Movies into iTunes, as I currently have these separately, I'll probably do a trial import of a few things later to see if iTunes is a good fit for me.

The complicated bit is going to be keeping everything organised without having to have everything in my ~/Music/iTunes folder, I might try symbolic links as a way to bypass that problem so I can keep iTunes happy while having my files organised more the way I want (movies in my ~/Movies folder etc.).

Problem case is my ~/Library folder, it seems to me that it would be an ideal one to keep on the SSD drive as it's lots of small files that are commonly accessed but infrequently changing, while the meat of my user folder is on the standard hard-drives. But applications use ~/Library so inconsistently, with some growing to huge sizes to the point that my folder is currently 12.3gb! I may keep user ~/Library folders on the SSD, but symlink any offending folders, I'm looking at Steam in particular which is a bewildering use of the Application Support folder.
