I wouldn't say that, especially when it can't handle normal tasks at Apple's own Thunderbolt Display.

I am sure that is a sole or minority case, even users on that exact thread reported videos running smoothly on the TB display. It's most likely software related if you ask me.

The HD3000 does have problems with smoothness on the Thunderbolt display but the HD4000 generally is fine.
 
The HD3000 was powerful enough in my Macbook Air to play most current games at decent settings. The HD4000 is more than capable of handing day to day stuff, and could be used for gaming if we didn't already have an EXTREMELY capable nvidia card also.

as for external display....I used to clamshell my MBA all the time and it ran perfectly smooth...so I don't know why people are complaining.
