If they would give me the ability to set up a file system and MS would give us the Office Suite for iPad, I would never look at another device.

Something tells me I will be looking for a long time.

If you need a filesystem on your iOS device, Goodreader will be the best five bucks you ever spent for your iPad.

File systems are a thing of the past now with advanced dbs. Why would you need such a thing? We're not living in the middle ages anymore. All you need is an application that handles the DBs of the files you need and then you interact with the db naturally.

The untapped market that has not been exploited yet -- Tabletop Computers.

Yes, large touchscreen computers (think 6-8 times size of iPad) that set flat (or at an angle) on a table surface. Apple could likely do very well in this realm if they invent a product for the market, it just hasn't been done yet. There are many advantages to be able to run apps on a larger screen that can be touch manipulated and touch-controlled...anything from hi-res photo editing, to architecture, to business. I do believe Apple will eventually come out with such a product, but this arena is fair game right now for any company that can capitalize on the opportunity.

Wasn't the same thing said about Android phones? Soon there will be a point of diminishing returns for the iPad to the point where Android and iOS are very much even. It's still too early to tell. Android became bigger than most people imagined by aggressively pursuing the market. Just you wait.

Like Microsoft's big-ass table?

Like Microsoft's big-ass table?

MS Surface! Ha! That was such a funny concept. I think the idea came from those Pac Man tables of 80s lore. The product didn't catch any steam because people are mobile creatures. Such a product just doesn't have a practical purpose because of the mobile products of today. There's also supposed to be holography taking over that sector.

In technology, there’s a fine line between innovation and eccentricity. Sony’s new Tablet P boldly approaches the line, and then stomps all over it.
Overpriced and under-thought, the Tablet P -- which runs the “Honeycomb” version of Google (GOOG)’s Android operating system -- is at least distinctive. No flat black slab here. Instead, its rounded case houses two screens, each measuring 5.5 inches diagonally, separated by a thick black bezel and two hinges that allow it to fold up like a clamshell. Or maybe an eyeglass case. Or a taco.

What were they thinking?

For the story, pictures and a video:

It looks and feels horrible.

I was a fan of Sony (had their tv, ps3, psp, like every other electronic device). It just looks silly.

I hate the kindle fire and would either get a samsung galaxy which I dont really like either if I had to choose between that or any other tablet.

Reminds me of the Kyocera Echo nighttime media event debacle.

Worst. Launch. Ever.

Godspeed Sony. Godspeed.

The guy in the video is the man

Was it just me, or did anyone else bust a nut @ 1:32? LOL. This is pretty bad. That bar down the center when watching videos and games that don't take advantage of they dual screens is horrendous. Loving the new iPad btw!

When you purchase an iPad, you obviously don't only get a nice well functioning tablet, you also get this:-

- iOS 5
- App Store: thousands of apps of every category! Many of the good ones are FREE
- iTunes and all the related subs on iTunes
- iCloud (sync/backup/photos/mail etc...)
- A nice device that works well with your Mac/iPhone/Apple TV (AirPlay, sharing photos etc)
- Yes even MS Office for FREE see here http://youtu.be/lADhON7twFU

It will take a lot more than a cool - price competitive device to compete with iPad. Apple will not make same mistakes as they did with Macintosh back in the 80's :D

I think it's a fantastic triumph of imagination and thinking outside the box that Sony came up with this design. It's an absolute joke they shipped it.

It's great for everybody when tech companies have robust R&D. But you also have know when to cut you're losses and shut it down.

I think you can tell more about Apple by the products they choose not to ship. It takes a lot of discipline to spend millions of dollars developing something and then say "this isn't working".
With that being said, I'd love to spend a day in Jony Ives lab to see what he has been cooking up.

I do love how Sony thinks we're in the 80s and they are a premium product. I mean can you say delusional? $550 for that POS, get the hell outta here.

It's Sony. I haven't turned my PS3 on in a year and use my Xbox all the time. They find a way to screw it up then think they can charge a premium for it. Sorry, Sony, I haven't considered you all that relevant since I got my Discman in junior high (and shockingly still works....lol).
Sony is definitely bigger in Europe: the PlayStation 3 is the number one console throughout Europe and by most people (but certainly not by everyone) Sony is connected to quality products and good customer service.

Customer service of Sony is really great over here - much better than Apple's customer service (which is terrible in Europe).

I actually think that Sony did a really great job with this tablet. I mean, this design isn't really great (it definitely looks better in real life, however, than on the internet), but at least they are trying to differentiate.

I'm not exactly sure if you're saying this - that at some point all the other manufacturers will drown out Apple's iPad, because there are so many against one? That might make simple sense, but if we look at the iPad in the same light as the iPod, it makes more sense to think that Apple will simply dominate the market, regardless of the volume of manufacturers trying to compete.

What's more extraordinary is that Apple didn't create the music player, in the same way they created the iPad. What they did with the iPod is create both the consumption device and the ecosystem to feed the consumption. The iPad is just another consumption device (albeit new and revolutionary) that taps into the ecosystem they already have.

They're doing the same thing with Apple TV and if they go forward with an Apple Television, they're again just allowing people to feed off of the ecosystem they created long ago. It's a brilliant business model and one that is going to be difficult to crack for other manufacturers. Google is trying - but they're trying lots of things, which means they're not so singularly focused like Apple. Same thing with Amazon, although they really are just a store that sells everything and if you've ever been on the selling side, you'll know that having an almost unlimited number of choices for products to sell can be more of a hindrance than a help.

i do really hope they do succeed like the ipod.. they were really successful there.

but they didnt with the iphone vs (android) phone... despite their innovation there too. they gained huge traction in the smartphone biz. but their intellectual properties were copied blatantly.

so my fingers r crossed for iPad in the battle vs (android) tablets.

Yep - Apple could have grabbed considerably more market share in the smart phone market if they had been able to launch the iPhone into more markets, with more telco's, right out of the gate. That is what allowed the android powered market to take off - given they became the defacto alternative that many telco's pushed when they didn't have the iPhone.

Of course comparing the iPhone to any single competitor shows it blows away the competition, but the overall market has gotten away from Apple, if that was even the goal.

I do think it's possible that Apple will gain market share as people become unhappy with their android powered phones - I know two people just waiting for their contracts to end so they can switch to the iPhone, given the constant problems they are having with their Samsungs.

apple have a big marketshare in the tablet industry because unlike their phones which are an absolute and utter rip-off, the ipad is actually decent value.

What does that matter if you can use software to protect?

Do you go out in the flue season or just stay indoors.

Apple is not immune any more, either. Wait and soon you will see.

Reminds me of the iPhone 4S:p

It's not the same. Windows kernel allows a virus to be way more destructive, while OS X does a way better sandboxing. Also, mobile devices are too underpowered to handle the antivirus activity. Trust me, you don't want an antivirus in your tablet.
