I'll try using MacTheRipper first this time. Presets? What's that?

Presets are pre-defined settings. They come with Handbrake, and you can also add your own.

Are you guys using the most recent version of MacTheRipper (3.0.14) or the older, free version (2.6.6)?

I went to try and find it and it seems this guy wants "gifts" in return for the new version, but I kept reading elsewhere and it seems that he's kinda flaky if you don't give a good enough gift. Somewhere else he posts that the "average" that he receives is $100. !?!?!?

Please advise. =)

You can find the older, still functional version of MacTheRipper (2.6.6) here, for free: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14414 .
Newer versions can be had via torrents as it seems.

Thanks, I downloaded the older version. I was just reading on their forums that the older version has problems with newer manufactured DVDs. The example they used is if you have the Godfather on DVD from 7 years ago, it'll work - but if you have the one that was re-released two months ago, it won't work. ['It' being the older version of MTR]... Anyone experience this?

The whole MTR thing to me is not worth the time. It was great back in the day, but 3.x has been in beta for years. I don't even bother any more.

If you have a PC available, you could try DVDFab6. The decryptor part is free for evaluation. They update regularly and ever DVD I've tried has ripped fine.

On the Mac side, you could try Fairmount and/or RipIt.

Also, make sure you have the latest version of VLC. I think Fairmount leverages the decryption algorithms from VLC.
