This one has gotten me in URL's. Same for .xml, it changes it to .XML. Most URL's are case sensitive, so this is annoying.

Prediction is not enabled when typing in URLs, at least for the browser's address bar. If you were typing it into an e-mail, it's easier to just send the link from the browser (the + icon)

just figured it out how to disable auto correction/complete on iphone 3g:

Rename the "TextInput_en.bundle" to "TextInput_en.backup" and it disables auto correction.

ts located at /System/Library/TextInput/

use ssh to jailbroken iphone 3g.

My 3G is not jail broken and I have the options to turn it off as per the instructions shown earlier.

Strange, I bought mine this past Sunday and I do not have this feature.... could it be something Apple has changed from the initial time of release until now?

I don't see it, any idea how to turn it off (not jailbroken yet)

It is very very bad if you type letters in a different language. For example, I wanna type the word "happy wedding" in another language, but iphone corrects "wedding" into something else which means "death". That is horrible if you didn't spell check and sent it.

I hate the predictive text. It comes up with the most insane, off the wall predictions about what I'm typing. The feature itself isn't annoying, but the vocabulary its working with surely is.

Yes, especially if one is texting in more than one language!

No the poster earlier had jailbroken his phone and modified his settings app. He must have forgotten he did that or something...

Work around to avoid Auto-Correction

I find that if I type any letter, step back to the immediate left of that letter, tapping goes into Edit mode, and I can then type anything without the Auto-correction.
But most of the time, I think Auto-Correction is a good feature, worthy of exploitation.

go to setting -> general -> keyboard -> turn "Enable Autocorrection" off

This worked like a treat, thank you! I write many of my text messages in Estonian, so predictive text was particularly annoying, as the words it suggested were never correct.

what don't you like about the corrective text? There are some timesthat I guess it can get annoying, but overall it seems to be much more a positive than a negative- for me anyway..

It is EXTREMELY annoying when you ask a rhetorical question to criticize someone's wishes. This OP is among MANY who want to control this system, not be controlled by it.

I want to share my experience with predictive text.

I am still wrapping my head around PT, though I have been involuntarily using it as have we all now for at least a decade. I have also noticed how over time it learns. The algorithm for this is beyond me, and I wish I knew it. So I would love to see some readable documentation.

I know you can set your vocabulary to replace one string of characters with another. But after some time it gets corrupted and you have to start over. This seems like a non-robust implementation which leaves the user a back door. It indicates the endangered species of hands-off user-controlled user interface that Jobs innovated in the market. Apple is more and more going off its prime directive and all.

If I could know more about HOW the PT is designed, my user experience would enable better best-work practices. For example, which rules determine when Apple will stop trying to PT a specific string? How many times exactly? And how does the user bring it back if s/he wants to use it some other time?

I do see how old this post is but the issue still is out there. Unaddressed and orphaned as far as I can see...
