Can anyone please explain the following?

My series 2 watch is receiving txt msg notifications even when beyond the reach of my iphone 6. Thought maybe it was a latency issue so decided to conduct the experiment below

I wore the watch to my gym this evening and asked my partner to txt me at a specific time whilst I was there and behold I received the txt msg notification.

Didn't have my phone with me and have never had the phone with me at the gym in the past.

The gym is approx 3 miles away from my home.

Anyone know how this can be happening?

Thx in advance for all replies.

Does the gym have open wifi that you have connected to with your phone previously? Perhaps a wifi hotspot provider? I realise you have never had phone with you so maybe the SSID and password are same for a wifi hotspot at the gym.

Next check in control centre for a cloud icon as seen in link below.

Never used the wi-fi network at the gym but guess it must be open access - will check it out tomorrow.

Has to be the logical answer I guess.

Gym may use Xfinity wifi for example that uses the same password everywhere (if you have Xfinity account).

Next time you are at the gym, swipe to bring up Control Center on your watch. If there is a little cloud in the top right hand corner, you are connected to Wi-Fi.

This evening confirmed that the watch is autonomously connecting to the gyms wi-fi.

Didn't know that the watch is capable of connecting to wi-fi independently.
