I don't know why people complain so much about limited data. I have unlimited 3G with Verizon and I have never used more than 600MB in one month. My monthly average is around 350MB to 450MB. Why? Because everywhere I go, with the exception of work, I have Wi-Fi. Is it really that difficult for a lot of people to find Wi-Fi hotspots?
Yes, but work is where most people are all the time. If I had to stream music for 9 hours a day while at work with no WiFi well, you can guess how quick I'd max my data plan. Same goes for the commute to work and back.

There is a LOT to complain about.

Fixed: Americans are smart and don't like getting ripped off for something that should be cheaper.

NO!!! They are lazy people who don't want to work and want everything handed to them. The unlimited data plans are just that!!!

More likely half a day.

In Mass, free wi-fi is hard to find. You need to go to a public library or a store with free wi-fi.

That totally depends on where you live, if you live in a major metroplis, like I do in LA. I can't walk 5 feet without numerous open wifi hot spots, seriosuly I work all over the LA area and never encounter this issue.

Well then I guess you are describing yourself as well. SMH

Like my answer to someone else, jsut depends on who you know and where you live. My innder cirlce all those people are hard working folks who dont want anything free. If I just generalize like you does that make every American an motivated go getter? Don't generalize, because it's npot really making a point.

Yes, unfortunately I am. A lot of "Americans" don't expect the most bang for our buck and stuff for free.

It's quite unfortunate that good Americans get a bad rap because of the lazy incompetent ones.

Exactly. To generalize all "Americans" as lazy is ignorant. He obviously has no idea how hard I work and never had anything "handed" to me. You get lazy people from all aspects of life and all countries.

Unlimited data is a thing of the past. Many people are enjoying their iPhones with limited data plans. They are the future and unlimited is the past. Stop whining and get with it. There is nothing anyone can do. These phone companies can do whatever they want, when they want. Its all written in the contract to cover them, just as AT&T stated they can throttle from day 1.

If you use more data than PAY UP FOR IT. I am a little shocked that this move came this early. Seems like it was just yesterday VZW stated anyone who upgrades can retain their unlimited but I guess thats out the window.

AT&T's announcement will come next.

Well Matt since you are such an expert on the future do you mind giving me the scores to some of the big games coming up? or how about the next big hit on the stock market? Oh, you are just conjecturing, or guessing, well that make sense. I think the future is bright and that Unlimited is the future, and tiered is the past.

So you are now going to say that you are just saying that what is going on now shows your statement to be true? OK so nothing ever changes? No new companies come out? no new business models. I guess you must be right, because if it is happening today it must be the future, just ask all of the people who used to make horse and carriage buggies. They should know.

Actually the bad rap comes from sheep who dont stand their ground, and just cave to any pressure shown. Then they say it didnt matter anyway, and the new way is better. Then they try to tow the new line to show that they are right for not standing up in the cold wind and fighting the good fight. I think Americans are getting a bad rap for being week minded and week willed people, unlike the people who founded this country and would fight for not only their rights but the rights of others. But you wouldn't know anything about that would you?

While it does indeed stink that the greed of these companies is pushing them to charge more for less of a product, I don't see this affecting me. I rarely use over about 400 mb/month and don't really see it going up much even after LTE is introduced on the iphone.

Precisely why i store movies and music on my phone.
Not only am i completely non-reliant on an internet connection, i also don't have to worry about data limits, having to wait for something to buffer, etc.
I really can't believe why people use icloud.
I mean come on! How little intelligence do you have that you are willing to pay apple to access music/videos you already own!!!

I'd be with you except iCloud is a synching service, not a streaming service. Meaning the stuff stays on your device but you can make sure each device stays the same (so basically you aren't listening to it as it downloads, you just use it to make sure all your devices stay synched together without having to worry about telling it to synch). So you still have your stuff on your device.

But in principle I'm totally with you. I want my stuff on my device, not where I have to have internet to access it and I'm reliant on some company either giving me access that they could take away in a second or even not going under.

In the old days... meaning before everybody and their grandmother got an iPhone... unlimited was available because few actually used it that way all the time. When at home or work, people used WiFi or wires instead.

Now there's a whole generation (or two) who doesn't want to pay for cable broadband and/or telephone landlines, but instead want cheap wireless access as their primary or only connection method.

This is not a bad desire. Lord knows some of us are paying insane amounts for keeping several types of comms. It simply comes before the infrastructure exists to handle that many people wanting unlimited high speed 24/7 streaming.

Still, those who do want truly unlimited data can get it: they just can't get it for a cheap fixed (and subsidized by the rest of the people) price any more. They have to pay per actual usage now, just as those who use more gas or electricity or any other utility do.

Now dont get me wrong. I can understand why a company would change the plan and move away from unlimited, I dont like it but I can understand.

I can also understand why a long time customer would complain about the change.

I have a problem if the company is breaking the contract and not letting the other party out without an ETF, which doesn't appear to be the case with the recent Verizon statement..

What I do have an issue with are the shills in the audience making derogatory remarks about someone because they purchased what was offered freely ans sold to them without duress, saying how they are steeling or looking for a freebee by purchasing something that was aggressively marketed to them, then making more derogatory remarks when said customer displays his frustration for a company changing the plan out from under him.

To make it clearer for some. Its like going to Subway and getting the deal of the month sandwich for $3.00 instead of the normal $6.00, then another customer telling you you are steeling because you are paying less, trying to get something for free like a crook.

I think people's gripes would all be solved if they offered rollover. If you are paying for 2GB a month and using 1GB every month until you go on vacation 14 months into your contract and use 5GB that month, is it really "fair" to be charged extra for those 3GB as overages? Some would say yes, because that is what we signed up for. While I understand that sentiment to a degree, the end user is still getting screwed. This would also put an end to those ridiculous "Americans want free stuff" comments. I think many Americans would simply be happy with getting what they paid for.

Also, why on earth were these companies allowing upgrades to keep unlimited data if that was not their intention? Allow the user to keep unlimited data until the contract expires. If an upgrade is used, give NO unlimited data option. The user can easily be informed when the contract expires months ahead of time and be required to choose another data plan at the completion of their contract if they want to continue receiving service from said carrier.

I wish there was only the unlimited option...
It's 2012
and they are going in reverse the phone companies I mean back in 2007 there was barely anything big to do on the iPhone but now in 2012 we have so many new things to use the date for...and it's stupid how we can only be limited to 2GB per month and what sucks is that we have to worry about how much data we use everyday and why should LTE be important if we would be limited to the data we use? Faster speeds so we can worry even faster.
We should protest or something. Billion dollar companies and they don't even want to give us unlimited data.

Who is limiting you? You an use as much data as you please.... you'll just have to pay for it now. Sucks I know but welcome to the real world.

This is the key reason I purchased a 64GB iPhone and will do so again with the new one. I want my media and apps with me so I don't have to stream. When i'm in the office I use WiFi and when I am out and about I look for free WiFi hookups, its not always easy but it's worth it.

I know I will be moving into a tiered data plan when they roll out and the carriers know we have little to no choice especially since they make sure we don't. Where are you going to go? AT&T to Sprint, Spring to Verizon, Verizon to Sprint, etc, etc. In the end they will all screw us for data and they know they can. We want data and now that they have us they are going to fleece us for what they can.

Well I enjoy my iPhone but its really annoying when your carrier rips you off. And this counts for all people in Germany that have contracts with tmobile.

For several months I have noticed that my bandwidth always gets limited. No problem I can live with that but the ting is that tmobile states that although I have unlimited date use it will throttle bandwidth when I have reached 300MB download to 64kilobits (8KB/s). Yeh ok thats chill. However I always get throttled when I have reached between 90-150MB. Thats what two apps and the data usage in settings tell me I have used that month. Yesterday night I was throttled down and I had only use 99MB. This pissed me off finally.
Called customer support and asked why this is. Turns out they always round up data usage in blocks. Every time you recieve data, an email a whats app whatever the data usage gets rounded UP to the next 100KB. So you receive an email, lets say 112KB, tmobile counts it as 200KB, you receive a whatsapp, on average 15kb, tmobile counts it as 100KB. Thats how its measured. The apps and the iphone data usage measure exactly so I always know exactly how much data I have used really but for tmobile and their special rip off way im always at 300MB. Customer support went on saying that well they do offer the possibility for the customer who was throttled to get the throttle removed for an extra 300MB (tmobile MB). Guess what, it costs 14,99€. Seriously 15€ for a real life maybe 100MB.
I told them well isn't that a rip off. She just said, nope it says it in the AGB (Algemeine Geschäftsbedingungen). Atleast they have their ass covered legally.

I find this completely pathetic. Think if you on purpose have a contract with 3GB as an extra, but you only get 1GB of actual data before they throttle you. Its quite unacceptable I think.
But theres nothing anyone can do.

Sure there is. Stop buying smartphones if you are outraged. If people boycotted, these companies would get nervous FAST. The problems is, we get on a forum and complain, but don't actually do anything about it. It is this way with a lot of things, not just mobile phone contracts.

Unlimited data isn't feasible - maybe a couple of years ago when smartphones were a relatively novel idea but not now where everyone and their granny has a smartphone. Networks cannot physically cope.

There's one network here in Ireland that offers "unlimited data" which is great and all, except the network grinds to a halt from about 3pm until midnight and all day during the weekend as everyone finishes school, college and work and starts to avail of their "unlimited data".

Whereas the network I'm on which only has "limited data" where I pay more to use more, data is consistently fast day and night.

Unfortunately it's something we're going to have to get used to. Pay for what you use is going to be the way forward real soon, not just for internet on your phone but the internet into your home too...

Do any of you remember when dial-up internet was all the rage and you were charged by the minute? Cell phones themselves first appeared with minute allotments. Many carried cell phones ONLY for emergencies - not for regular use. Computer internet use was rare; it took FOREVER for a page to download and the websites were so embrionic as to be impossible to use.

Phone companies got smart and took off data limits as DSL evolved with flat rates and smartphones appeared. They made it nearly impossible to even buy an old-fashioned cell phone. Smartphones are now rated as possibly the MOST influential invention EVER!. It has literally changed the world from politics to human interactions.

And now - the cell providers want to turn back the clock. Pay for each use. I can't think of a more backward move. The only rationale I can see, other than massive profits, is that they can't keep up with the exponential growth in use. I think Verizon's tiered rates are outrageously expensive. They are added on top of a minute-based plan.

What's the most expensive item in your budget, other than maybe the mortgage? I'll bet it's the phone bill. Why are people tolerating this?
