It's funny you should post this thread, as I was just thinking about this. Before being a regular reader of MacRumors forums, I would have NEVER thought to put something like Wrapsol or the Moshi Palm Guard on my computer (and in fact, just used a sleeve for my BlackBook). Now I'm starting to wonder if I should buy something for my new Air... I can't decide whether it's overkill. Anyone regretted NOT using a skin?

The simple way to answer this question is to ask yourself. Would you be upset if you scratched your new MBA. If so the $ spent on giving you peace of mind is easy to justify. If you really wouldn't care if your machine was scratched - then don't.

Only you know how you feel....

Good point -- I guess I never really worried about scratches with the Black Macbook because it's not easy to scratch and wouldn't be obvious if I did. Sounds like the aluminum is easier to scratch? In that case I may more seriously consider a Wrapsol.

I like the Speck plastic shell because it's thin, but thicker than a skin.

It allows me to "throw it around". At least if it gets scratched or dented I can feel better knowing that it would have been worse without the plastic on it.

The Speck plastic case on the MBA is much thinner than the one on my MacBook Pros. Most people don't even know I have a case on it.

Last time I was at the Apple store waiting for a "genius" the lady next to me had a MBP that looked like she has a half cm deep gouge in front of the trackpad. I mean, it looked so damaged and the metal case caving in I wonder how it could still work. (Well maybe that's why she was waiting for genius..)

Anyways, I think once you get over the new car OCD like behavior that usually ends with your first door ding or dent, it feels almost better driving a car without worrying about dents and dings...

I got tired of babying my 2010 MBP... when I got my 13" 2011 Air, I wanted a true, easy to handle device. Just like the OP, I got a Speck shell, and I love it. Shell + SSD = less babying.

I no longer carefully place my computer on a desk. I don't have to care what edges slam against the surface. I can throw the computer onto my bed. Shake it. Idk, pretty much whatever. And I love knowing that when the 4th gen Air is out, I'll sell this guy in brand-spanking-new condition.

Has anyone noticed that the iPad 2 has a softer aluminum or is it just my imagination. It is getting nicked much more easier than my MacBook Pro

I never thought about how others may be bothered by how I handle my MBA! I guess it's how I feel whenever I see some parent losing it and spanking their kid in public. I look at them ticked off and stare at them like a hawk to see if they're any signs of child abuse or something along that line.
Sorry to get off topic, but that annoys me more than someone throwing around a laptop. Parents being afraid to physically discipline their kids is why we have so many young people that don't give a darn about anything much less have any respect for authority. I am not old (31), nor do I have kids, but I will tell you that when I got out of line, my parents beat the piss out of me regardless of where I was or who was around. All I can say is that I learned about respect really quick. Now we live in a society where a routine swat on the tush and a parent has to be fearful of the kid calling the police. It's a royal shame that it has come to that (children truly being abused excluded from that statement).

Oh this is such a tasty topic for that other forum :)

Totally agree with you though.. Thinking about the times I got beaten up as a kid... I bloody deserved it....

In any case... I take of care my machines... to the point of anal retention... OCD or whatever else... :) Need cure :)

Where do you draw the line? If you saw some guy swatting his girlfriend outside a club, would you find that acceptable? Beating a kid is
morally reprehensible.

Thats totally different and you know it. You cannot compare disciplining a child that is still in the process of learning right from wrong to an adult hitting another adult. There is a huge difference between discipline and abuse. If you care to debate this further, we should either continue over PM or in another thread in the appropriate place as to not ruin this persons thread.

Back on topic.....

I am normally extremely careful and protective until the first scrath or ding. The same goes for my phones, tablets, etc.....After the first blemish, it becomes much easier to not worry about when the next is going to happen.

Have owned over 5 aluminum macs. Every one covered by an Invisible Shield.

Never has one overheated.

/urban legend about "heat dissipation" If it's stuffed into a case while running, well, then you are on your own. Never a good idea anyway.

Sorry. Skinning and overheating scary posts are simply not true. Stay off the internet if you are stressed about it. :)

Well, it's not urban legend. I have personally experienced it. Zagg's skin also has the tendency to turn yellow as it heats up from contact with the aluminum surface, and it'll turn worse over time.

I should have retitled the thread to:

If you saw a parent using an MBA to spank their kid, would you feel bad for the MBA or the kid?

The spank or not to spank discussion is as difficult as the 11" vs 13" MBA question.

Personally, I'd rather treat my MBA roughly and treat my kids supportively (ie not spank). It's not hard to have an air of authority over your young kids without physically spanking them. When the kids are older, it's harder for the kids to respect your authority at times, but just deny them the privilege of using their Apple device and they'll probably come around.

Just remember that kids are probably a thousand times more sensitive than most adults can appreciate. I believe kids can turn out well from parents who spank, but that IMHO is in spite of their spanking and not because of their spanking.

No pun intended?

Anyway, I did baby my MBA, but you guys are right - after you get a scratch or something, you just don't really care anymore. Now, I just semi-literally toss it around -_-

I love my Apple products, but I prefer to risk a few scratches than to cover up their sleek, aesthetically pleasing designs with bulky cases. I go with a 'the more scratches, the more loved it is' mentality.
