Maybe. If they only had 100,000 pre-orders, people here would have said pre-orders did mean something.

The funny thing about figures is that they're only meaningful if they support your position. If they're counter to your position the usual response is "just wait and see..."

We'd see the same "wait for the quarterly numbers" if the preorder figures were substantially lower than last year's numbers, only it'd be the other camp saying that. :D

Apple also has to put a few in channel inventory for launch day.

7 countries.
7 major retailers in US alone.

Yup. Some people should hold their breath to wait and see when the zune will kill the iPod.

A few hundred thousand pre-orders don't really tell you anything about the success. When the first quarterly numbers come out that will be the first indication of the success of the 4S. The analysts are predicting Apple will sell over 100 million of them in the next year which is a pretty lofty goal for a mild refresh.

How can you say that a million sales in 24 hours means nothing and then quote a sales figure as proof of what success means? I understand that longevity means something and that they need to keep a steady pace, but a blind prediction by an analyst is not a true measure of success.

By this time next week they will probably be reporting ~5-10 million sales worldwide. Then they'll only have 350 days to sell 90 million more to make sure that analyst target is met!

It's possible that preorders were given a boost by the 24 hour coverage of SJ's passing. 3 month sales might not be affected but for those people who don't pay much attention to launch date had many many reminders that his "final" product was releasing.

One reason for Apple's success has been the sales to people who don't know a thing about product development cycles, release dates, chip names, RAM or retina displays. Many purchasers will never open the settings panel after a genius sets it up the first time. My 100 shares just love those guys!

You mean there are people who buy something because it just works for them and what they want to do, never worrying about all the nuts and bolts and acronyms? Say it ain't so! :D

There's no way they are making 150,000 units daily, I'd say at the very most three million a month. Maybe four but that'd be pushing it.

I'm sorry... do you work at the manufacturing plant or something? Just because YOU can't visualize it, doesn't mean it can't be done.

3 month sales will be awesome this year thanks to the holiday shopping season.

That's true, just seems like a lot. I'd say it at most four million units a month which to be seems way to high.

Apple sold, what, 20 million iPhone in the last reported quarter? I know that includes 3GS too but that's still 5 million iPhones a month, more than 4 million units a month.

This is exactly why Apple didn't release iPhone 5 with a new form factor. They have had more than a year to perfect the manufacturing process and now they know how to make the iPhone 4 design. They didn't want to throw away sales because they couldn't make the new design fast enough. This way Apple has another year to prepare for the next design while making the new phone fast.

"How could they have sold out? "

"I gotta have it! I gotta have it! I gotta have it" (me included).

I wonder how many people said "Im NOT upgrading if its only a 4S- Im keeping my 4" and ended up upgrading anyway (me included).

Im SUCH a sucker for Apple stuff - ESPECIALLY the iPhone. And if it makes me happy, Its worth EVERY PENNY to me. Dont care what anyone says.

You will not know for weeks what they sold during pre orders and what they sold on release day, it takes a bit to compile those numbers, but I am sure there will be plenty at the Apple stores, the one in Menlo Park Mall in Central NJ had plenty when they closed their doors at 11PM last year on release day, just that Apple, AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint get there pre orders out first, but there will be those who wait in line for days waiting for the 4S at least at the Apple stores.

Last year when my son and Wife got theirs they did not pre order, they got them a month after the 4 came out, but when I called the store one day, they had none (this was Friday) then I called them at 1100 hours on Saturday and they had them in stock, so we ran to the mall and bought two 16GB models, however the Genuis told me they were out of 32GB models, so know one really knows but Apple how many they will have.

last year Foxconn said they were producing 140K iPhone 4's a day so adding another 10K in a year probably isn't really significant for them.

Foxconn factories are huge and the are a few of them in China and Brazil. They also employ something like a million people world wide.

this is why i love apple fans so much.

I hate to keep saying it, but...

Remember when people were saying the 4s was disappointing and would flop? Where are those people now?

Hmmm. Disappointing ...a little. Flop....no way!

I would have loved an LTE miracle on announcement day, and like a lot of people, the rumors had me expecting something different. So I was a little disappointed. But the benefits far outweigh my unrealistic hopes (and my old Motorola Droid)...so of course my preorder went in first thing Friday!

Plus don't forget that if they did get a leg up with manufacturing, they still need to go back and load iOS 5 into the phones.

A lot of conjecture here, but let's imagine they have 2 million 4Ss in "the warehouse" that they've been making for the last two weeks. Let's imagine that Apple internally gave the iOS 5 golden master the go-ahead last Friday. That's a lot of stock that needs to be wired into the system and updated--all before final packaging (phone, plastic, instructions, cord, plug), shrink wrapping, stacking them into piles of 100 (or whatever), shrink wrapping that...

As has been said before, your distribution is only as fast as your slowest piece. iOS 5 loading to premade phones (as opposed to what I would assume be iOS 5 loaded onto the A5 once the final version is out) must take time.

Its so funny the people who had trouble getting the phone and trying to get their pre-orders in...

I didn't even try to order the phone until 5:00pm EST on Friday and I ordered two no problem...

They are both marked as Preparing for Shipment... No problem at all.

What exactly is funny? Many who did what you did for the iPhone 4 had to wait days and/or a week for their phone.

People like myself want their phones on release day. I don't see the problem with that.
