my tower (dual 1.42GHz G4) was about 3000 new in 2003. its still a great mac even with all current software. i'm sure the 2mb L3 per cpu has something to do with that.

I forgot to say how.. saved for 3-4 months and paid cash.

powerbook was a graduation gift from the 'rents, and the iMac was another gift/need for school....

I stole it. :p

Seriously, I saved up money from web-dev projects and bought my 20" iMac. It hasn't paid for itself yet (not much time for freelancing - summer courses).

My first Mac was a Performa my folks bought. After that we got an Acer and eventually I used X-mas/birthday funds to buy laptops. (First a Compaq and when that died my current Dell.) I'm waiting for Leopard to come out so I can get an iMac with the cash I've been saving. I have the money for the machine now, I'm mostly just saving for CS3. If it wasn't so pricey I'd go for a Mac Pro

i got a grant from the university i was studying at in 1999 and bought an ibook g3. that was stolen in 2005 and my insurance company paid for a new ibook g4.

my mother got her imac g5 on the apple interest free credit over eight months.

Powerbook G4: Paid for with part of a medium-sized inheritance right after college. Rest of that money's still sitting in the stock market, chugging away.

MacBook Pro I ordered an hour ago: Cash-back credit card that I will be paying off immediately from savings. But I get a whopping $41 cash back for using the card, and my giant chunk o'change accrues interest for an extra month before it goes bye-bye :).

I college my parents paid for 2/3 of my first mac, I paid for the other third with money I made by working. The only thing I've ever bought on credit was a car. All three macs I've bought by myself I've paid for outright with money I had in savings. I've never saved up for a computer. It's always been a matter of deciding that I wanted to use my savings for that purpose rather than another (such as keeping money in savings).

i bought mac pro w/ cash
got it off Craigslist
3400 in cash
totally crazy
went to the bank and withdrew the funds

handed it to the guy

walked away w/ a new 50lb toy

I'd feel nervous doing that. I thought about buying a computer off craigslist. There are some great deals. But I feel like if something went wrong and I paid cash, well, I just feel uncomfortable.

Did you get some sort of record of the transaction?

I applied for the Juniper Visa card to get iTunes reward points and no finance charges for 90 days--I paid it off in 60 days (2 pymts)... Oh, and I got a 15.4" MBP (my very first Mac) first week of March this year...

I got up, went to work everyday, paid all my bills and dropped $2k on my powerbook. I paid cash.

I always pay in cash. I say if you can't afford it now, don't buy it.

amen. back in 1998 i bought a sony vaio laptop on credit. that stupid laptop was like 3 grand and by the time i finished paying for it it cost me around 5 grand.

success story

I worked 5 days a week last summer, im 16 now, 15 at the time, i saved over 2 grand... and proudly bought my imac for 1400 when it updated last september... im a beast:apple:

Did you save up for months (years?) to get your Mac?

Or did you go the American way and put it on a credit card? Are you still paying for it?

Have any of you ever used that Juniper card Apple offers all the time?

I'm curious, since allot of you seem to be buying everything as soon as it's released.

:D

I went the American way and paid for it with a credit card. But that's because my debit card's daily spending limit was lower than the cost of the iMac and I wasn't going to walk around with 2 grand in cash to pay for the thing. As soon as my card statement came, I paid off the entire cost of the iMac with my tax return and money I had saved.

Plus, for every $2500 I spend on the card, I get a whopping $25 gift certificate for Amazon, so any big purchases go on the card.
