Apple chose the fingerprint sensor because they like the attention, they crave bragging rights, and they can claim they're the first.

They had a golden opportunity a couple of years ago, if they would have offered a "Larger display iPhone along with the current size" a strategic move that would have pushed Apple into the stratosphere of success.

But having blown that chance, they lost out on a tremendous revenue stream. They must be content with their current position hence the rather minor changes this time around.

Uhh, Motorola Atrix (Android) offered a fingerprint scanner a couple years ago. And yes it worked well and it's placement was pretty well thought out IMO.
 
Whats lacking in the ringtone and alert options? (Thinking whether or not to get a 5 or wait for Nexus 5.)

I feel like they could add a different assortment than what we have now. I mean with every iOS update we get new wallpaper, so why not add more tones and alerts. Just me being picky :p
