How Do Conversations Work?

I initiated (I thought) a conversation yesterday and have yet to see a response even though the recipient has been on the forum several times since. Does some kind of banner get put on his screen? Is there something I am suppose to do other than checking "start conversation" in the person's avatar thingy and typing something in?

It shows up as a red number notice on their screen when they browse. Some people might also get an email notification.

If you see it in your conversations, then you sent it.
