i know someone similar. people like that always have a weakness. find that and just always bring it up, over and over. If they come out with something particularly big-headed just laugh.:D

This. Find it. Use it against him religiously. That or just ignore him. Egocentric people need to be around other people in order to show off their "skills".

You just have to tell him quit acting like a douche. If he's your friend then you'll be able to get away with that.

He may need someone to tell him that.

With one of my friends - one of my best - I apparently did what was/is referred to as one upping. He would tell a story or something to that effect and I would try to 'trump' his story. I never really noticed I did it.

One day this girl (that I barely knew) that was friends with my buddy, bluntly told me I was a 'one upper.' Never knew what that was.

Now, whenever someone starts a convo - and is obviously excited or happy about their story/experience - I don't go out of my way to tell a similar story/experience unless explicitly asked.

No big deal to me.

I have met with the similar situation sometimes. But I used to keep silence, ignoring what he said.
