Pathfinder worked great. Thank you. There is a 30 trial that I downloaded seriously thinking of buying.

If you're running Windows (e.g. Parallels or other)...

If you're running Windows (e.g. Parallels or other)...

You can copy over in windows.

It's much slower and the time remaining will be off - don't believe it as it changes from 3 to 6 to 11 to 4 minutes.

But it will copy.

Having Trouble with smaller files?

I know that this form was mostly talking about moving large files. But I had an error code -50 trying to move a tiny file to an external hard drive. Over my Airport Extreme shared HD I had this problem before but couldn't remember if/how i fixed it. Then I remembered Disk Utility. Repair. Restore Permissions.

(restore the disk with OSX, your startup disk.)

similar problem when trying to copy a 5 gb folder and i get the cannot copy error 0 message.
I use 2 external hard drives and have copied hundreds of files back and forth from my macbook but it keeps rejecting this single file... is there a certain reason for this??!!

error code 0, fixed

Disk Utility - erase - Mac OS extended(Journaled)
This will fix the problem.

I tried this and it worked, thanks.

details:
running osx 10.6.4
I erased a 8gb thumb drive, then copied a 7.3gb file from another external drive to the thumb drive.

error code 0

EDITED: This move did not work, however, if there was a way to compress the file? Otherwise, it did not copy the audio and the resolution was degraded. My appologies, I thought this would have been a work-around.

[I have my entire family history that I want backed up. approx. 27 GB. divided into 3 large .mov files. On a whim, I opened one movie with Quicktime and hit export. I selected the external (Seagate)HD video storage and at this moment it's copying to the ex. drive! going to take over an hour, so I will have to come back and let you know if this worked-seems like it is going to. Be back as soon as I know!]

If I do this... Will the External drive work *ALSO* on Windows??

TIA

No, you would need drivers for it installed on every windows computer that you needed to access it from. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HFS_Plus#Windows
Also, I wouldn't trust those drivers and would keep backups of the data.

Idea:
You could use an archiving utility that breaks up large files into many small files and still use FAT32 so it's compatible with mac and windows. 7zip on windows does that, it's free, open source, and supports many different file types (including iso and exe file archives). I have never used the feature that splits archives up into multiple files though.

I've found "Split&Concat" ... Definitely worth the Download...

Does Zipeg work?? If not, what program for Mac allows you to??

Sorry. No idea. There are projects that 7zip links to but I don't know if they will split archives.. OS X's archive decompresser works well enough that I have never absolutely needed to download something else.

Solution using reformatted SD Card

I had this problem too copying a file over 8gb. I read this thread and realized all the SD cards I were using were of course, FAT32. I used disk utilities to do a quick Erase and changed it to Mac OS Journaled and my file is happily copying!!:)

This may not help everyone but I just needed it to get from Mac to Mac with a little drive time in between.

Thanks all!

tried with path finder, and didn't work

the app is copying some 5 out of 7GB and sudenly the message:

"An error occurred.
The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -1309.)
src: /Users//Desktop/VIDEO/Harry Potter 1 - The Sorcerer's Stone.mkv
dest: /Volumes/BOB_MEDIA/Harry Potter 1 - The Sorcerer's Stone.mkv
item: (null)

any clue?

i'm trying to copy an extractred blueray movie from my macbook pro into the fat32 2TB hdd

Hey guys,

i think i just did something real stupid, i followed these steps and now i think i have lost all my files from the disk:( is it posible to retrieve them again?

Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility

Click on the drive on the left, and then click on the "Erase" option. Here you will be asked what format you'd like to use, along with whatever name you choose. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then hit "Erase...". This will change the formatting from FAT32 (called "MS-DOS (FAT)" on Mac) to a Mac-friendly format that can take any size file you want. Since I did this with my external 1TB drive, I now have 10GB Garageband files and 15GB 1080p movie files on the drive without breaking a sweat.

Give Path Finder a try. I just ran into this problem with Finder and a large HD video file (14GB) and luckily had Path Finder (from CocoaTech) handy. It transferred it with no trouble.

I'd had enough trouble with Apple's Finder over the years that I'd purchased Path Finder some time back. It's come in handy on numerous occasions.

Of course, it'd be nice if Apple would just fix their product so that I didn't have to spend the money, but I suppose that's the way it goes. ;)

I have been trying to use pathfinder to transfer a 6.8gb file but when it got the last 100mb it would always stop and says 'Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error -1309.)' any suggestions on how to fix this?

Could not unmount disk

Hi, having the same problem but the above doesn't work. Keeps telling me "Volume Erase failed with the error: Could not unmount disk"

All the content on the disk remains unchanged.

I've downlaoded and installed the most recent Mac drivers from Western Digital (included on the drive was 2-24, I downloaded 2-25). The disk in question is a brand new Western Digital 2 TB My Book Home Edition. My system is a 2 X 2.66 Ghz Dual Core with 7 Gig RAM running OS 10.6. But not running it very well. Motion, Final Cut, and Compressor crash on me with far more regularity than is acceptable. Considering a system wipe. Yay!

Any other ideas before I do that?

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Disk Warrior says : Directory cannot be rebuilt, the file system is unsupported. This disk is not a Macintosh disk. This disk does not appear on the desktop. This disk is 1.82 TB is size.

Which is interesting because the disk certainly does appear on the desktop and I'm able to transfer small files to it. But for backing up my HD footage shot on a P2 it's completely and totally the most expensive paperweight I've ever bought.

I know this is an older thread and I'm a new user, but I'm having the same error message: "Could not unmount disk" and I'm having difficulty finding data on it online. My drive is an eGo iOmega 500 GB drive, and I've been using an external hard drive for more than a year now with an iBook and had no problems.

I ordered a new MacBook Pro, which crashed when I tried to access my data on the external drive. Now my data has disappeared. Does anyone recommend Disk Warrior for recovering my data? Grunj, were you able to resolve the problem?

This is how u fix error code 0

Go to Applications: Go to Utilities then "Disk Utilities" then select the USB flat drive you want to format. Then select "ERASE" then select "Mac OS Extended "Journaled." The give the USB flash drive a name. Then click "ERASE." VOILA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU DON'T NEED TO SPLIT ANYTHING THOSE WHO SUGGESTED THAT ARE SERIOUSLY MISINFORMED.

Wanting to recover data

Yeah, that'll work if I wanted to delete all the data on the drive, but I'm trying to recover it. I'm getting the same error message when I used data recovery software and Disk Warrior--there's something going on with the drive that makes it think that there's something running. I'm planning to replace the circuit board for the hard drive and go from there. Anyone have experience with that?

Had the same problem... and it appeared at first that the trial version of Path Finder was going to do the trick but alas... it wasn't able to overcome the FAT32 formatting of the thumb drive. So I tried formatting the drive in OSX... Was then able to copy my 8gb file to the drive, but of course, now my PS3 couldn't recognize it. Final solution... found a smaller version of the movie... I'm downloading it... and anticipate no further problems. Path Finder's an interesting program though. May poke around it some more to see if it's actually worth buying. :)

Error code 0

Maybe this helps. I was trying to copy a huge folder of movie files onto an external hard drive and was given the specific error. When I deleted the files with extension .mkv it transferred.
