how do i make vlc default player

cool beans. thanks for your help i just switched vlc to be default player. but what if you dont have an avi file. Is there any way of make vlc the default player without having an avi file to get info from?
Your going to need a sample of the file type that you want to default to VLC.
I know there's a preference pane that you can install that lets you set the default program. I believe it's this one.
